running into the same issue now. suddenly the windows key opens the default start menu when set to open the start11 start menu. is the only fix a complete reinstall/loss of settings/shortcuts etc then?

i have yes. was trying to get the whole stack from online to windows to start11 reset to the user default and start11 was the only one left retaining the old one for whatever reason. wasnt sure if there was a way to force the clear or delete the cache somewhere or perhaps it'll do it at some arbitrary point. microsofts syncing stuff can behave pretty poorly relatively speaking.
So i recently changed my microsoft account and as such my microsoft account avatar/image/user pic. unfortunately the windows 11/start11 menu is still showing the old image when i open it. how can i force it to update to whats currently set everywhere else?

it has to be looking at the shortcut target and/or not checking the extension for some reason. im not a developer but this appears to be wrong. shortcuts should be a check for extension > .lnk > shortcuts fence, full stop. it is evidently checking it in some circumstances as evidenced by the removal of exe/disabling of downloads rule allowing it to function. yet that only works with exe as removing ico from download rules on my media fence does not all
Try Re-order your rules. And put the shortcut above of the download. That should send your shortcut to your shortcut Fences first before the Download rule applied. Reduced 71% Original 946 x
okay, went through a bit more testing. definitely something weird going on. if i remove exe from downloads rules, it'll still send exes there and it'll begin sending exe shortcuts to shortcuts. problem is lets use .ico for example. i send those to a media fence. ico shortcuts go to the media fence, yet if i remove ico from media rules then the shortcuts dont suddenly begin going to shortcuts (and this would leave my non shortcut icos without a place anyhow)
yes disabling downloads which is set like this does begin sending it to shortcuts. I think its flat out ignoring the fact its an .lnk as i just tested two types of shortcut. created one from an exe > downloads. created one from an .ico > media. neither went to shortcuts. bug maybe? cannot see how it cant be. i imported
this what youre looking for? tried changing it to documents and testing too, but shortcuts still went into downloads. im at a loss.
This used to work fine but i was using it on windows 10, this is my first time using fences on 11 (in case its related). either way ive tested this a few times now and i have program shortcuts set to go to a fence called shortcuts. each time it ends up in my downloads fence which is downloads > downloads. the only rules for downloads is 7z, exe, iso, msi, rar, zip is it just skipping the .lnk portion and following the shortcut to its endpoint
Hi klepp0906, Rules are stored in the registry Paul Scroggins Associate Technical Support Analyst
perfect, thank you for the confirm!
Just want to confirm something before i merge an old registry key. I restored some old layouts to my backups folder and it worked fine. put my fences right where I wanted them etc. it did not seem to configure fences how i had it/wanted it though? ie custom rules etc. was this user error or do the settings (outside of layout) require backing up/merging the registry key?
and restarting with groupy will re open all your open explorer tabs if you have it set that way. the microsoft solution does not. it also doesnt let you ungroup tabs.
any update on this? waiting as microsofts implementation is trash.
Not home at the moment, but I will check it. I know I had it set both ways at various points. If that can have an effect at least I now know of an advantage for using the IP as opposed to the host name. will report back. Thanks!
So i'm transferring a huge file over the net and my secondary keeps going to sleep. Is being connected ala seamless not enough to keep it awake? this checkbox only applies to if youre KVM'd in?
Hi Basj. Yep, considered that. Would just be messy to create a bunch of shortcuts in the same folder as the exes every time something similar crops up. a baked in rename function would be nice but for now it sounds like custom shortcuts are gonna be my only option.
So i have a portable app im trying to pin. When it pin it, the exe name is not being used, it shows up with the File Description as the title of the shortcut which is basically a sentence... I tried going to shell:user pinned and renaming it but that simply results in it disappearing from the start11 pins altogether. we totally need a way to modify this as its entirely unpinnable at current. I know with one of the older/tree style start menu's it
admittedly not to familiar on how it works from end to end but i upgraded to 22H2 ~RTM once i found out it was on beta and immediately opted out of insider builds. i'd like to think it wouldnt just carry on updating as then it would never be able to opt-out once the "next stable build" (aka 22h2) releases to the general public. either way, at some point in the future i'll be back on stable and can revisit. i can live with it until then i think lol.
As i ease into customizing start11 for the long haul i'm coming across some shortcomings, or perceived shortcomings anyhow. In case i come across anything else id like to make a plug for I figured id ask if theres a proper channel to do these sorts of things or if i should just post a thread? In this case, it would be great to have the option to sort pins both in and outside of folders alphabetically in the context menu!
understandable. normally for that reason alone i stay away from insider builds. unsure whether its a factor in my issue or not but i guess i'll be stuck sitting on it and waiting until 22H2 gets pushed public. then if it persists ill post back. I never touch the dev channel but i couldnt help joining the beta channel so i could get file explorer tabs this time around :P already queued for unenrollment but its not supposed to be pushed to the masses until ~se
ah, good call. was half asleep when i posted this so didnt consider insider potentially being a factor. perhaps its due to being on 22H2? build is 22621.160
here are some screenshots. registryfinder.exe isnt a document or a file....
the optimist in me takes that as assuming i can watch for it being added in an update then? :) that would also mean ill be re-installing start11 lol only other gripe i have is wondering why icloud is nestled in a folder that looks like this including 2 of the 3 icons being incorrect while with the default start menu it looks like this with no folder at all <img
