Found the prefs.ini and have tried changing settings including fullscreen = 0 // fullscreen = 1 and I still get the same. I'll try changing some other settings and see if I can't nudge it along.

Oh, forgot to mention, I had SmartException running but it didn't generate a crash report. The game doesn't appear to "crash" in the traditional meaning, instead it's not drawing the screen properly so I have to close the program myself.
I usually play GC2 in windowed mode, the other day I had to reduce my desktop size for some testing, when I played GC2 it launched the game in full screen mode, but didn't crash. Desktop now back to normal, launched GC2 and I launches a window, I can click on 'Start Game' or 'Update' etc, but once I start the game I get a black window, non-responsive. I've been getting regular CTD, each time I always forget to have smart exceptions running, today I remembered but after galciv2 crashed there was nothing in SE Here's the relevant parts from my debug.err -------------------------------- Machine Name: ARCANE Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195) Service Pack 4 Languages: English (Region

Except that population will indirectly limit production of colony ships or troop transports. Population grows very slowly at low levels, if you strip a planet too low from building troopers it'll talke a long time to recover.
When at lower difficulty levels, the computer makes "dumb" moves on purpose, in this case it gave you some starbases which had the potential to be devistatingly powerfull. It's annoying because you don't really have a good way of finding out what they gave you and it can swing your diplomacy around.
Farms determine how many people are on a planet, by default a planet can produce enough food to support 5b people (10b on your starting planet). More people = more taxes = more income but more people also = less morale. You have to play a balancing act, you want more people (especially with 1.1 changes!!) but too many will make it hard to keep them happy. Note about 1.1 changes, when a population is very low the population will i
Haven't seen it in 1.1 yet, but I've always taken it to mean they're concerned with my cultural expansion.
JesperEB, To be fair to SD, you should have smart execptions (SE) running and try to crash SDC (man, there's a lot of initials!), SD has a long history of tracing down crash bugs, even if they impact a very small number of users. Fordson, Do you have another box at home? You're allowed to have GC2 installed on more than 1 computer, if you can't wait for them to post 1.1 to the download page you could try loading SDC on
I saw someone else post how they did a non-violent game, I thought I would try similar to evaluate the game. I know you can't do culteral, someone will get p*ssed off enough and attack. Short version: Too hard to get Technology victory, at some point the AI will decide to attack you and there's nothing you can do. Takes far too long to research final stages. Human: racial bonus were planet quality (to fit more research tiles)
If they kill the freighter too many times the trade route will be cancled due to too many losses.
Try emailing support@stardock.com, they're very good on fixing problems like that. You can also try asking in #GalCiv on their IRC channel (launch SDC (Stardock Central) and go to Chat). Be warned that Stardock is in Eastern time, USA. It's quite late here atm.
Are you sure it has to be one of *your* trade routes? I thought any trade route going thru the ZoI would generate income for you.
There is a specific research field named 'Trade' that gives you access to the trade module. Uh, trying to remember the research tree here, it's universal translater, then trade. Someone will be along soon to correct me, I'm sure.
There are still reasons to have Farms on planets, Influence is generated by higher populations. If you're trying to win culturally or are in a stalemate and trying to prevent (or cause) some planets to flip, increasing population will help (along with cultural increasing buildings).
Yes, we are sure that social spending is wasted. Long story short, Brad (Frogboy) said it could be exploited and he's working on an eventual workaround. Later in the game I always turn my Social spending down to 10% or less. The sliders: Tax: what percent of income you're taking Spending Rate - how much you're spending of max on production (overall). 50% means a factory could produce X shields, but you're only providing enough money to produce X/2 shields.<b
Is anyone having a problem like this? I've tried 3 times now, at different times throughout the night, hit Update for GalCiv 2, it updates everything until it gets to 'Extracting package2.ini' Status says 100% complete underneath but it just sits there (have let it sit for well over 2 hours). If I cancel, nothing happens, if I exit SD Central I get a message asking if I want to cancel installing GC2. Have tried server 4, chicago and california and I get the same symptoms. I
Heh, "cankukistan", never heard that one before. While not in MI itself, I'm shivering on the shore of Lake Erie and it's not hard to boat over to Canada.
Heh, another SFB player Depending on my mood, I'll name them in "Generic" SFB names (FF, DD, DW, CL, CA, etc) or I'll occassionally go on different race themes (SparrowHawk, SeaHawk, WarBird, etc) I've done Klingon (D7M!!) Romulan, Orion, Gorn, Federation, etc. Hrm, I don't recall ever doing Hydran, perhaps specialize in fleets that have a small number of core ships and lots of fighters (tiny hulls). Early game, you
12/17/05 - And I know I was playing that version before and it wasn't causing the system to stutter. I am getting en error when I try to install / update the multimedia files (although I have them installed already), this is most likely the problem.
Weird... It's the most recent build available to me, I updated to it. Might be the thing that everyone else saw, I got a .9x gamma version by mistake and then patched "down' to it. Anyhow, it's caused some major system performance hits to me.
Brad (aka Frogboy) also said the AI was being tweaked to be less likely to go to war against more than 1 race at a time. I'm really looking forward to that change, having the entire game at war with you and throwing themselves ineffectively against your starbases is really no fun.

Wow, is anyone else having such a poor time with the Jan-16 patch? I've gotten 3 differernt CTDs (debug.err sent in), I'm getting windows popping up out of nowhere (example - detail screen for diplomacy with a race when I was in middle of adjusting spending) and system performance has taken a huge hit, it bogs my whole system down, game runs poorly, etc. Is it me or are others seeing this?
