Jan-16 patch problems

Wow, is anyone else having such a poor time with the Jan-16 patch? I've gotten 3 differernt CTDs (debug.err sent in), I'm getting windows popping up out of nowhere (example - detail screen for diplomacy with a race when I was in middle of adjusting spending) and system performance has taken a huge hit, it bogs my whole system down, game runs poorly, etc.

Is it me or are others seeing this?

That's the December build.

Weird... It's the most recent build available to me, I updated to it. Might be the thing that everyone else saw, I got a .9x gamma version by mistake and then patched "down' to it. Anyhow, it's caused some major system performance hits to me.

Sorry to hear that.  Not sure what to tell you.  What's the date on the EXE?

12/17/05 - And I know I was playing that version before and it wasn't causing the system to stutter. I am getting en error when I try to install / update the multimedia files (although I have them installed already), this is most likely the problem.

I'd check your debug.err and what your antialiasing rate is in the options.

BTW, are the latest versions of the multimedia pack supposed to work correctly with 0.8x version of the game?

Same story here, I downloaded the Jan 16th relesase yesterday (with the Multimedia pkg) and yes I have bad experiences.-

I can't even start the game, just launching the predefined scenarios kicks me out...

I am sending the Smart Exeception report - 0x4b66 - to gcbugs.

I also ran into some issues with the upgrade then downgrading. I unstalled all of Gal Civ II, even the multimedia pack. I did a reboot and then started fresh and reinstalled. I have not had a problem since then. If you haven't tried this yet, it couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

There was a problem right before the gamma started where a single XML file was accidentally updated for the public build, but none of the associated code was pushed along with it, yet the version number in SDC read as .9x This may be a similar problem where part of the private gamma, but not all of it, was pushed to the public space, so users may be playing a game where the data files are out of sync with each out.

It's just a guess.
