Also, the AI leaders were really individuals, with their own personalities and ways of acting. GalCiv actually has a strong, interesting backstory, but personally, the campaign just isn't worth playing through to get the story. Also, the AIs seem to pick standard patterns of behaviour that are available to all of them, so they may be very different from game to game, but f

I haven't had time to study all the replies in this thread but I have one question. Are 'non-optimal' defenses degraded when hit by a weapon not geared for them? E.G. Ship A has beam weapons Ship B has 4 points of Armor Therefore Ship B has 2 points (square root of 4) of defense, but will that defense ever be degraded from laser fire or would only rail guns degrade it. It's not clear in the original example. If that is the case, then for relatively low w

There's one minor inconsistancy in the UI that has bugged me and I was hoping you'd give it a look while fixing everything else for DA. When you click inside a text box, sometimes typing will clear out the old text, sometimes it'll just start typing where you've clicked. For example if you want to give a bribe of cash to an alien race it starts with 100 but if you just click there and start typing numbers, the 100 will go away. Compare that to ship creation, both the Ship Name

When your computer suddenly stops and reboots, there's 3 most likely reasons. Memory failure Run the memory test that CariElf linked Power supply failure Either it's insufficient, failing or there could be a connection burning out somewhere. Under normal load it is fine but under heavy load it cannot bear the full current and this causes the power supply to shut down for safety reasons. Overheating Motherboard may have auto-shutoff enabled. A prob

I'm not too proud to admit it, the very first encounter I had with GC (before the Altarian expansion) was a pirated copy, I think I was able to wait 24 hours before I bought my copy. I pre-ordered AP and GC2 and as soon as I can I'll be on the DA pre-order as well. Someone in this thread said it right, respect the gamers and they'll respect you.

Keep working on the drivers problem, that may fix the problem. If that doesn't your next most likely cause is power supply. Any time you have a computer spontaniously crash and immediately reboot the problem is poor power supply 99% of the time. Buy a high-quality PS (shell out the extra 60 bucks to get a good one) and that should solve your crash. Now I don't know much about laptops, others will be able to answer better than me, but as far as desktop systems you don't wa

Another bug, I'm not finding it posted yet. I'm using Logitech wireless keyboard and moues combo, I need to use 'hardware mouse' option. Frequently while playing the mouse will stop responding. Well, actually not quite, instead the *cursor* will lock in place but it's clear that the game is still reading what the mouse is doing. If I move the mouse around various items will highlight meaning that it's recognizing the mouse is moving over it, but the pointer stays locked

There's a lot to read here, forgive me if I missed it already but I tried searching. Playing 1.2, beta 1 and random races, I just met Custom Race.

After updating to official 1.1 patch I notice the IV upgrades of engines are still smaller than the V upgrades. This is true for both Warp drives as well as Impulse drives, haven't researched the last engine line enough to confirm. This bug has been around for a while.

Not trying to tell you how to play the game but I'll explain why this is happening and what you can do about it. The more population on a planet, the lower the base morale. The two biggest factors in lowering morale are taxes and population, if only one of your planets is having morale problems, it's probably the population. The reason why Boogie asked if any farms were on 'food production bonus' tiles is that farm would be boosting the population by at least double, therefore pushi

Eh, what time is it? Jumping Jehosafat! 7am! Uhm, is it possible to get an alarm clock added to the game? That is one good thing that MOO3 thought up.

It's part of an old, left over system and I think I read in one of the beta notes they're getting ready to remove the last parts of it. In early beta, you could invest money in espionage and... uh, trying to remember other term, demorilization maybe? One was used for finding info on the race and the other was for reducing morale, causing havok within their systems. You could have different levels (advanced / medium / etc) in each, dependin

FOOL: To answer your original question, yes it will run but you might need to tweak system and/or game settings to make it run as smooth as possible. As others have pointed out, Windows XP is very resource hungry, I would strongly suggest you upgrade the RAM on your system, add another 512M RAM minimum if not increase total size to 1 GB. This will not only improve your gaming experience, it will drastically improve your overall e

I'll be perfectly honest how I heard about GalCiv 2. It all starts with piracy. Huh, what? Well, a while back I was itching for a good 4x space game and was searching for some new games. I hit the underdogs (abandonware web page) to see what they recommended if you liked Moo2 and galciv was mentioned. I searched around and found an illegal download. Later that night I bought my copy through stardock's web site.<br/

As far as your game crashing, go to whatever directory GalCiv2 is installed in and look for a file named 'debug.err' Open that file, post the top section (computer information) and then scroll all the way to the bottom and post the last handfull of lines. No need to post all the stuff in the middle.

As far as defending yourself, use espionage (or just look at their ships) to see what weapons they're using. Build some defensive ships that have a small amount of weapons and defensive tech against their weapon. Build military starbases that grant weapon and defensive bonus, then watch them try to crack your planets. A fleet of tiny ships, each with 2 attack / 2 defense and aided by a military starbase can easily defeat fleets of medium s

Bingo, reinstalling DirectX fixed things, game launched in full screen mode, went to options, changed to windowed mode, game running fine now. In un-related news, silly windows "genuine windows" check when trying to download direct X. When I got my software license it never said I was required to jump throuh a hoop to get a patch and I've never been presented with a contract to change the license agreement, therefore their
