Quoting a01,

That's strange because before installing Start 11, it did show the temperature although admittedly it was next to the icon in text.

It sounds like your start button was centred before and the weather widget on the left of the taskbar.  This will display differently as it is wider.

End of Neil's quote

Ok that makes sense.  The primary reason I got Start 11 was so I could ungroup the icons on the task bar.  It's the feature limitation I hated most about Windows 11.  If I had to choose between ungrouping taskbar icons and the temperature display, ungrouping wins hands down.  Thanks for your help!  :)

FWIW, I noticed if I changed the alignment of the icons in the taskbar settings, the temperature would briefly appear before Start 11 moved the Start icon to the left.

That would be normal.  The widget only shows more information when it is on the left on its own which only happens with a centred start button.  It could be the temperature display with just the icon (so start button on the left) is something in newer Windows insider builds as I suspect the screenshot was taken on a newer build.

Sometimes I get the standard Win 11 start menu.

Sometimes when clicking the start button, I get the standard Windows 11 menu not Start 11.   If I click the start button several more times, I eventually get the Start 11 menu.   It's intermittent (several times a day) and most of the time it works as expected.  No discernable pattern.

I'm on 1.2 latest but had this same issue pre 1.2
Windows 11 22000.556

I uninstalled and reinstalled it several times but the problem persists.

How many monitors do you have and does this computer have touch or pen input?

I am enjoying the enhancements brought by this version, especially with ungrouping buttons. However, I'm gonna post a list of things I think could or should be improved. I am on 22000.x builds of Win11, NOT dev/beta.

  1. Enhanced taskbar moves the Start Button to the left and you can't change this. Because of this, the widgets/weather icon is just an icon. There is no text, temperature, weather conditions, etc. In my opinion, the Start button should be able to stay centered and all the taskbar buttons to the right of it, keeping them all centered.
  2. Rarely I will click the Start Button and the native Win11 Start Menu opens. If I try again, it works fine. Not a huge deal but something that can probably be improved.
  3. This is a big one I've noticed: Shift+Restart does NOT work when using Start11. It hasn't worked in previous versions and doesn't work here. Windows just restarts instead of going to the Recovery Environment. You can easily tell if its going to if it says "Please wait" or "Restarting" when you do Shift+Restart on the Start11 menu. "Please Wait = Recovery Environment". In order for this to work properly, I have to open the native Win11 menu and Shift+Restart from there.
  4. Something to plan for ahead of time: MS is removing the ability to rearrange tray icons unless you individually turn off a bunch of icons then turn them back on in the order you want them (from Settings). This is very tedious. If a future version of Start11's taskbar can allow this functionality again, it will make a lot of people happy.
  5. Lastly, another thing that I personally, and maybe others, would love to see for this enhanced taskbar is seconds in the system clock. With Win11, this registry option that used to work in Win10 stopped working. "ShowSecondsInSystemClock". It would be great if Start11 can bring that back.

The biggest issue I have so far with this release is that the thumbnails for active apps on the taskbar do not show when hovered over. They work as they should when start11 is NOT active but as soon as I turn on Start 11 sometimes they work for a while but then they stop completely again.

This is what they look like without Start 11 active

After toggling Start 11 off and on they do work for a while but eventually stop working completely.

Do you have something altering your thumbnails as that is unusually large?

That is being caused by the dev/beta channel insider release of Windows you are using.

We have a tweak in v1.22 which should help this but that is not released yet.

I use WinAero tweaker to make them larger. It has never been an issue for native windows taskbar and still works 100% with the native Windows 11 taskbar. When I turn on Start11 sometimes they work, sometimes they don't no matter what size I make them with WinAero tweaker.

Overall after several days of use I can say that version 1.2 is VERY unstable. On my machine it restarts itself seemingly randomly several times a day and sometimes I need to restart Explorer when taskbar and Start menu become corrupted. In no way this release is "release" quality, guys, more like still beta, or even alpha, I dunno :)

Are you able to put your screenshots / videos on some more internationally recognised websites?  Youtube or dropbox or onedrive etc.  Unfortunately we are unable to view files on those two sites you have used.

It sounds like you are experiencing some sort of resource leak causing problems.  If you are experiencing crashes then any information from the event log would be useful.  I suspect a conflict between something else running on the PC and Start11 as this report seems isolated.

If you open taskmanager you should be able to view USER and GDI user handles on the details tab for processes.  I would be very interested to know if the handles for explorer.exe are very high.

Do you have any applications which might change their taskbar button icon regularly?

Does it work better if you disable the taskbar enhancement feature?

Edit : We have located a small resource leak which can occur if you open up an application that uses an old non alpha channel icon.  This would happen once per icon change, but if the app changes icon OR you open and close windows with this icon over and over the leak would add up.  I suspect this may be what you are seeing, but the gdi handle count for explorer would be helpful especially over time and in particular when the issue happens.

Number 1 is a limitation currently due to changes in Dev/Beta builds of Win11.  We didn't want to offer a feature and then take it away so until we have a solution for that we have to enforce the left alignment.

On number 2, do you use elevated apps at all?  Would this be happening when one is foreground?

On number 3, This has been addressed for the next update.  I am unsure how it went missed all this time but thank you for reporting it.

On number 4, Exactly why Microsoft are doing this I don't know.  It may be this reappears in the future as it seems like lack of time to reimplement rather than any other reason.

I cannot promise anything with number 5 as it is a rather niche need.

Yo!

I dunno why you have problems loading Joxi screenshots, cause I have just tested it under American VPN and they open fine, as well as my video hosted on YandexDisk. But sure I can load screenshots to OneDrive if you want, just tell me which ones you need from my numerous reports :)

As about Explorer.exe USER and GDI - I would love to provide you this info but I do not understand where to look at. I see no "USER" or "GDI" columns in Details of Task Manager - care to elaborate more or show a screenshot where to look at? :)

And what do you mean by "apps which might change their taskbar button icon regularly"? Which taskbar button are we talking about? I don't understand. I can send you any log files from my system if you want, just move me to the right direction, yet I am not sure that something is actively interfering with Start11 as I have fairly normal (and quite beefy) system I use for professional video editing and games.

I have not tested it with taskbar functionality disabled, but I presume it should work better - no? As basically it will be only Start11 for Start menu and Microsoft's native taskbar :)
