Censorship Vs free expression

Censorship Vs free expression

On a publicly accessible 'Family' website, what are YOUR thoughts regarding the line beyond which no-one should cross?

What is considered 'inappropriate' to you?

And why?

Needless to say, this is not the forum for boundary crossing  but an open discussion on where lines really SHOULD be drawn.

I will be at pains to stress that at no time is there a 'double standard' being applied and to suggest such is insulting to the reputation/s and moral conduct of the moderators here.

when i first came aboard i assumed 3 or 4 peeps ran the whole thing, i never would have fallen in love with this place if it wasn't so user based

oh and people could also list hardware items they might happen to have to sell....

though that might also open up a question of liability....

horiz0n.....Brad [Frogboy], when setting up this site wanted to engender a sense of community involvement via the tiered levels of 'ranking' from Visitor/Citizen to Admin/Moderator, with steps/levels in between, and, [shock-horror] it tends to work.

Brad has had many years of Net experience to draw upon, using a similar format.....where responsibility/influence upon the workings and success of the site increase through tried and true methods such as time, experience and reputation.

When the concept was first mooted there was significant opposition relating to thoughts of prejudice/discrimination which, by and large has NOT been the case....not when the whole process is akin to the saying about "Big fleas have little fleas, on their backs to bite them....etc".

Ultimately each person will reach his/her level.....commensurate with their degree of involvement/ambition/devotion to the site and its community and success...

cool, had no idea about some of that.

Shmoopy closes her eyes tight and wishes hard..."I DO so wish all the ideology of 'flaming' someone would FINALLY cease and let the cooler heads of moderators prevail. Imagine if you will...a forum where a shmuck happens to post and nobody responds to his 'troll rants' (which brings his ugly cause to the TOP of the forum heap every time someone DOES repsond) but rather a member/s quietly email/s an admin and the troll is either warned/thread-locked/exiled etc.

Lady Akasha was in no way intended to be seen as posting a Flame. I will send her an e-mail apologizing for the mix-up. It's just the order in which the post came through. It was the above post I took umbrage to. Up until the name calling in that post I think the discussion was pretty civilized and on-topic.

That was a flame? The "name calling" In Shmoops post, I'm pretty positive, was not directed at you, Hash.
My, my you are a touchy fellow

listen to China Hash, I'm pretty sure Angela was not directing that to you at all... hehe

Whether it was directed towards me or not, I was under the impression that name calling is flaming and hence unacceptable. I've been around here for about 15 months now and observed what goes on here. Mostly good and fun, but I don't appreciate double-standards. Either it is ok or not. Whether it is from an 'ole-timer or noob.

And China, IF you knew me you would know I am not thin-skinned or a prude at all. Example, I saw someone question my nick as having to do with drugs. Not in the slightest!! It's a very old and very risque' (did I spell that right)inside joke between myself and my friends. Only a few people know what it really means. I'll give you a hint. Hash refers to food and that's all I'll say about it.

My feelings are not hurt. I hold no grudges or ill will towards anyone here and will not stop frequenting this board.

I do believe though that this thread has run it's course so I won't be back to it. So just in case you're curious about my nick. E-mail me.

O wait Hash One question...Is your 14 yr old daughter privy to your risqué nick or do you let her think her daddy is some kind of drug smuggler?

Eek! That's what I get for wishing aloud.

Seriously though...the wishes against flaming were from a past-tense perspective is all and not aimed at anyone in this particular thread. A 'shmuck' is a fairly tame 'name' used for some trolls that have come and gone in the past.

Thanks for that Cuz I was really confuzled as to what the heck I did wrong. I kept thinking "Dang, I was on his side" I was thinking last night it was the ".... uncouth" statement, cuz I couldn't figure out how I was flaming. K... I feel a lil better now.

And by the by, Drugs never crossed my mind with his nickname.

Thank you for the coffeeeeeeee, Doreen!

Well...I looked up the actual Yiddish meaning of the proper spelling of the word "Schmuck" and well I always thought it just meant "Jerk" but on further investigation... http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=schmuck

Guess you can learn something new every day.

You teasin' me, Paxx? Well, that was the "word" of the hour!
Yeah I always thought it meant either that, but a different word or just a complete idiot. I think its used both ways to my understanding.

Ah, double standards ... TV: can't show a person actually drinking a beer in a commercial, but when the John Wayne movie returns, you can watch John "knock down" some whiskey in the saloon...... Telemarketers (sp?): They are fighting the "no call" list with the "freedom of speech" approach. It's not OK for your neighbor to crank up his/her stereo so loud you can't sleep, but it's OK for a telemarketer to call you anytime they please? Sporting events where you can't bring in alcoholic beverages, but they will sell you as much as you want at huge profits.... Separation of church and state: You can't by beer on Sunday morning until 10:30 AM. All other days its 7:30 AM (Phoenix, Az).

Three self-governing (not web-site imposed) rules that I would suggest.

1. I have no problem with cussing but as pointed out, this
is a "family" web-site so use some discretion.

2. While it's fine to disagree with someone, and to do so
with enthusiasm, it's not O.K. to flame them as a human
being because you disagree with their point of view.

3. Rules 1. and 2. of course do not apply to me

Just so some respect when you disagree with someone else's point of view and in most cases, everything will be fine.
