Fences sluggish animations

Title says it all. I've seen threads on here before, but the support is abysmal..... Just asking for system versions, and for the user to purge / reinstall the system. Plain and simple:

>1909 18363.720
>Fences 2.13
>Automatic fence arrangement
>HDR
>1080ti, 8600k (not a system limitation)
>100% Scaling, 3840x1200. This is not my only monitor. It's happening to ANY setup REGARDLESS of system. It's f*&^ed.

Complete system install does not fix. I have fences running. I have a lot of icons. They should not impede the performance of this software, it's paid for and the functionality is intended to de-clutter my desktop. If it slows down with the type or number of icons, that's a problem.

It's seriously disheartening to see that Stardock refreshes their software (like Start8 now Start10), charging for it again, but refuse to fix bugs present in fences for years. Please fix this. I've paid for the software. The lag is unacceptable.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Fences 2.13
End of quote

bigunit7, Fences 2 has not been updated or supported for 7 years now...

If you decide to upgrade to Fences 3 - the current version - let us know if you still have issues.  At the very least, you can install the trial.

I checked the new fences store page, doesn't say anywhere that it's a distinguished version, 3 from 2. Nowhere did it say when I purchased fences 2 either, that support will be killed just to be sold the same product again. I'm not going to buy it, it's just a question of whether or not the product I paid to use will be re-activated against my account. Not updating it in 7 years because you've re-sold the exact same software, with support, again, is honestly a bit of a spit in the face of customers who've been long term supporters of stardock.

So basically, you added support for windows 10, fixed windows 10 related bugs, and added some basic crap like high dpi support? fixed 100% opaque fences? Why are these issues not fixed in fences 2? Support has been abandoned in way of charging users again for the same product, except fixed.

Adding other language localizations aren't a feature, they should be in fences 2.
All these fixes listed, have not been applied to fences 2.

Can say that this has most definitely left a sour taste in the mouth. Will not be supporting stardock software anymore.
Basj's comment reaffirms my fears that the team doesn't care about the customers, only about profit.

Stardock is not unique in this way - all software developers sunset support/updates for prior versions of their software.  Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, all of them / us.

Again, you should install the trial version of Fences 3 to see if it solves your issues.

Don't compare yourselves to those software developers.

  • Microsoft offered options for free upgrades. My win7 license is the same win10 pro license I am using right now, with no extra cost along the way.
  • Adobe's software suites are updated periodically, but aren't abandoned ridden with bugs. They are complete pieces of software upgraded with each iteration. Adobe does not charge users for a patch to bugs in a previous version of their software.
  • Despite apple being notorious for shoddy business practices, they also do not charge for patches to broken software.....
  • You are not Adobe / Microsoft / Apple, it's egotistical to compare yourself to them.
  • Sunsetting support is not the same as abandoning a broken piece of software to charge users for the same thing, except fixed. The bug did not come to light in Windows 10. It is within Fences.

Glad to know the Stardock Support Manager would rather spend time arguing with a dissatisfied customer on the forums, than ensure that the paid software works.

Duly noted.

Oh and btw, I tried your fences 3 trial. Problem still exists.

So you want me to purchase the new software for support, when it's been broken for 7 years? Highly unlikely. Think I'll stick with my version.

bigunit7, the lone point I have made thus far here is that all software versions have a beginning, middle, and an end no matter who develops them - Fences 2 has seen that complete life cycle.

If you want to keep working on your issue, I am more than willing to offer assistance - it just has to be with Fences 3.

If so, some questions:

Fences sluggish animations
End of quote

Can you help qualify that - define 'sluggish' to you and compared to what? What acts on the Desktop are impacted and to what degree?

I have a lot of icons.

What is 'a lot'?  While it does not list everything on the desktop, going into the Desktop folder in WinExp will report roughly how many:

Thanks.

I can't believe I've been dealing with major lag with Fences 2 and seriously had no idea that Version 3 ever came out. The lag was annoying, but I always dealt with it because Fences is a vital piece of software for me.

Just started the trial on Fences 3, and it appears all of the lag of Version 2 is gone. Icons move around rapidly without dragging along like they're sticky and moving icons into one fence doesn't move icons in other fences like it did in 2.

For those still on 2, Version 3 is definitely a major improvement and should be the first troubleshooting step. I had no idea you guys were even still working on the program, but I'm glad you did release another version. Will definitely buy when trial runs out.
