'Gay'

'Gay'

gay [Homosexual] /gei/ adj. infml - HOMOSEXUAL

gay /gei/ n. [C] infml

gay [Happy] /gei/ adj. dated (of a person) happy, or (of a place) bright and attractive.

OK....so, if 'gay' is used, along with > as a comment on a wallpaper, etc, it is clearly none of these meanings but is, in fact, the modern childish derogatory colloquial that equates 'gay' [or homosexual] as sub-standard in some way, and is intended as a comment expressing displeasure.

However, what it ACTUALLY IS, is a self-declaration of the commenter's immaturity and lack of communicative vocabulary.
It is also inappropriate, and grounds for Exiling/exclusion from participating on this site.

Well Im gonna go out on a real limb here and admit I am Gay. So what its only part of what make me a whole person but I do personally have np with the word Gay itself but I do dislike how it gets used as an insult. I have always held to the firm belief that most ppl I know who are also gay also have BETTER not worse taste. Why not say "That WP is so Straight" instead. To me straight is much more boreing thus a better description for something that doesnt interest ya.

"Never go straight ahead, just Gayly forward

Thank you very much Jess...I stand beside you on that. After I got back from one of the local gay bars...I layed in bed pondering this thread until I fell asleep. Looking for the right words to say, in addition to my last post. I had plenty that I could add, but nothing seemed appropriate. I agree that "Straight" is much more degrading. But, my thoughts are, if you don't like the work, you don't have to download it....And it's not necessary to express your feelings in the first place. It's not that the artist is going to remove it or change it to suit what you like. If you don't have a compliment on the art or are not going to express a neutral comment, you shouldn't post. WC is not trying to tell anyone they aren't free to think what they want. But, as a community, we should support each others efforts as an artist, regardless of taste.

Jess....a few of my friends from high school are gay and they were so afraid to tell me, like I was going to write them off or something.....don't worry your not going out on a limb.

The topic at hand is the way someone criticizes, whether the word gay was used or even if "this totally blows, how did this make moderation" was used, the bottom line is that you really need to watch how you say things. I have told people several times that what they made isn't for me but I also told them why. It's only my opinion and I'm able to convey that without being rude, crude and or obscene. A perfect example is one of the comments for my latest wall https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=8&SkinID=8285 Is it vulgar? Yes, but it isn't bashing me it's a compliment in this person's mind.

oh yeah, in the end it is a compliment just a different way to put it
Reply #84 Top
It's no biggy but it goes to show you that since this is a positive comment overall...it doesn't bother anyone, but had he said that it was a piece of **** then everyone would see that synonimously (Jafo spell-check ) with someone calling a wall 'gay'.

very true, only 2 wats to take something.....it depends on the individual on how exactly it is taken
Reply #86 Top
Yup. Even if he said it the negative way, it wouldn't bother me that he dislikes it but it would bother me he was vulgar about it, mainly since I don't cuss and it's against what I belive. Someone else might take it differently like you said DM

oh yeah i agree being vulgar isn't something you want to see on this kind of site or any for that fact but saying that to the person doing it will most certainly cause uproar causethey dont realise how it comes across and they are commenting in a way they see fit to do so

I think maybe it would be more clear to those that are acustom (Jafo spell check...again!) to talking like, that when they sign up they need to read the guidelines or something. Of course though if they are like me when I'm installing a new proggie that I don't read the copyright or whatever and just hit the agree button and continue on with the install.

'accustomed' [to], Green.... Spell checker

BTW....one thing to clarify here...if the comment had been "This wall sucks more painfully than a chest-wound" I'd have been quite OK with it...[would just strike him off my Xmas list ], but "Gay > " personally bothers me that we can expect a new generation of knuckle-draggers [bottom-feeders if you will] with homo-phobic malevolence and a pathological inability to compose coherent comment.

Combine that with his choice of nick and email addy and you have a pretty sad example of the human species...

Holy smokes now I see why you spell check so good

In all seriousness, this type of thing will always happen. The percentage of this type of comment is probably infentesimal (I like using these words that I'm not sure how to spell so Jafo can chime in ) to the average comment of a job well done or even one that expresses a discontent with an image or skin.

/ME goes to Jafo's Xmas list and quickly scribbles 1 dictionary for Green Armani

I had a gay roommate in college and he said stuff like that all the time. I never heard more painfully intolerant derogatory words uttered about gay people than he uttered about his peers. I also tutored the basketball team, and if I had ever uttered a breath of the 50's style racist stuff they bandied back and forth I couldn't have had to put myself back together with duct tape...

I don't like that I could be called white-bread and cracker endlessly, and roommate could call me stuff that I could never turn around and call him. I understand it to a point, but I don't like it. I will say, though, that to assume that it is a straight person calling a wallpaper 'gay' might be a quick judgment. I've know several gay people that would have easily done that or worse.

Regardless, this is server, privately owned and administrated, and what they say goes. We don't need to have a discussion on whether a rule is right or wrong, a rule is a rule.

I personally feel that in this younger generation, saying "this is gay" means the same thing as "dude, this totally sucks"
I may be wrong but words change connotations and definitions over the years constantly.
Just because in "our" generation 'gay' meant homosexual, I think that to today's youth it means the same thing as 'this blows' or 'this is so bad even my dog won't look at it'....
