'Gay'

gay [Homosexual] /gei/ adj. infml - HOMOSEXUAL

gay /gei/ n. [C] infml

gay [Happy] /gei/ adj. dated (of a person) happy, or (of a place) bright and attractive.

OK....so, if 'gay' is used, along with > as a comment on a wallpaper, etc, it is clearly none of these meanings but is, in fact, the modern childish derogatory colloquial that equates 'gay' [or homosexual] as sub-standard in some way, and is intended as a comment expressing displeasure.

However, what it ACTUALLY IS, is a self-declaration of the commenter's immaturity and lack of communicative vocabulary.
It is also inappropriate, and grounds for Exiling/exclusion from participating on this site.

Man! We're starting to go WAY overboard with the feel-good, new-age, everyone-be-nice, no-flaming stuff. For goodness sake, it's a MESSAGE BOARD...not a way of life. Get over it...we always can't get along. What's next???!!!! I know! We won't be allowed to disagree...

Fuzzy Nut this thread is specifically directed to you, as your email 'malt_balls' appears to be a dud, so a private message was undeliverable.

Consider yourself 'warned'.

Orion, no, Wincustomize.com is a 'family' site which has no place for abuse or discriminatory behaviour.
Disagree all you like....I even left the comment on my wall [funny, that]....but this site's Admins are entrusted with maintaining reasonable decorum, a place where everyone of whatever race, creed, colour, or sexual persuasion [for that matter] will NOT feel ostracized...

I understand and respect the policy and the admins trying to keep it "clean". I just think you're really splitting hairs on this one.

Orion has a point. We are not allowed to disagree with the admins points of view, no matter what our own opinions are.

"We are not allowed to disagree with the admins points of view, no matter what our own opinions are."

I've never seen any examples of this, and I've been around here since the first day it was online. My only point was that I thought this particular issue was being WAY over-sensitive.

I have to agree that the use of the word 'gay' in a comment by anyone is meant as derogatory, sexist and/or humiliating.
There is no place for so called 'safe' words that everyone knows are meant as a major insult.

If you need examples you should have read sweetbabygirls thread when it was around or some of my other posts. I get yelled at for not "conforming" to this sites wishes. I usaully can't speak my mind, it would get me exiled. Jafo is ever watchful.

But on the flipside I have only cussed once and I have never used any words such as "gay" in my post. cussing is uncalled for here although sometimes you wish you could.

Orion, no....I had the same 'discussion' at length on [another site], the home of kiddie-komment.
There, such like was considered 'free speech', yet it is/was no more discriminatory an expression than 'nigger' which, for some hypocritical reason, was considered taboo. Any 'other' discriminatory word or phrase appeared entirely OK...freedom of self-expression going to the illogical extreme of defending the rights of a Neo-nazi extremist with anti-semitic sentiment, over any and every indignant complaint from those targetted by comments like "look out, Jews, I'm your worst nightmare".

This sort of crap will simply not be happening here.

You newbies can disagree all you want, just remember this is a general rated site. So just keep the cussing, racial and sexual remarks out of your speech while on this site. Just because you think its cool to use that kind of talk everyone else doesn't. Thank You.

OK Jafo... Ignorant comments are way more different than racial ones. And for the record if this site gets racial I'm out of here. My friends say stuff like "that is so gay" and such. It's just American Slang. No harm was meant in what my friend said to me, I did not take offense to the word "gay" used. I think we are splitting hairs here.

I'm not as new as you might think BTW.

The 'Gay' comment was on one of my 'walls'. It doesn't faze me, personally in the slightest.
I'm quite comfortable with my own sexuality. However, there are members of this community who ARE 'gay', who are not just valued, respected contributors, but also friends.....and they do not deserve to have some child denigrating their work or their personal life-style in such a fashion.
It is therefore appropriate that this sort of 'kiddie-think' is quashed sooner rather than later...

This is a privately owned site...there is no such thing as "free speech" or freedom of expression here...and there SHOULDN'T be. The management has every right to run it however they wish, and they (you) do. I respect that, and will abide by the rules whenever I am here. We will simply have agree to disagree on this one. I still think you're being way over-sensitive. You're the boss and I'll let it drop at that.

Jafo I agree with you it is a childish behavior. I to have a few gay friends.

But I think you opened a can of worms that was better left alone and dealt with privately, not publicly. I bet this thread will get longer than the Iraq thread.

Actually kona, dude you know I've never said a bad thing to you (that I remember.. hehe) but the fact
remains that Jafo is right and you are wrong.
Just admit it... it is meant in a derogaotory fashion, period.

kona...my private email to him was returned 'undeliverable', so short of just simply exiling him and forgetting about it , this was my only alternative....

WOM and Orion got it 'right'....BTW, Orion's definitely not 'new'....but old as the hills [here]...

WOM...Friendly posting tip: You might want to compare UserID numbers before you make another “newbie” comment. !

Yes I said I admit it. I know it is a insult. That was not my point. My point is that we have no free speach here.
But then I remembered that this site is not the USA.
I'm done now.

I dont have a problem with people being gay. Or lesbian. Or whatever. I just dont want that being used in a derogatory manner just to put down how someone lives their lives. Being gay should not be something to be ashamed of, even if the term is used improperly. Being gay is a way of life not something evil. Its a lifestyle not an insult. I personally am not gay, but I dont have a problem when someone is. I know this wont change some peoples minds but I hope you dont use this term as an insult again.

As a fellow moderator on this site, I totally agree with Jafo and will personally and happily exile transgressors of this rule. This is not a Yahoo chat room, it's a graphics website where the contributors and artists work hard to provide quality content for free. Whatever you think of a piece of work, there is no need for derogatory, discriminatory remarks like the one pointed out above. It's just not necessary.
