PC vs. Mac

PC vs. Mac

-or- the suit vs. the slacker

By now, I am sure most of us have seen the new round of Mac vs. PC commercials. You know, the one with the middle age, sort of uptight looking, fuddy-duddy dude in a suit representing a PC, and the young, hip, cool, laid-back dude in old jeans and a T-shirt representing a Mac.

I have seen a couple of variations, but they all focus on the same thing. They all are trying to convey the same message: Macs are just cool and "work", whereas PCs are out of touch, laborious and problematic. Of course, I find it odd that so much of the advertising lately is on the hardware (considering I am typing this entry on my Windows laptop with Intel Core Duo processors, an pretty nice ATI graphics card, more RAM than a Mac Book and a larger HD than a Mac Book, at easily a few hundred dollars lower cost).

Nevertheless, I am not a Mac hater. In fact, I fully anticipate owning a Mac someday, when I can afford to have one IN ADDITION to my Windows computers. But I have to admit, I really don't care for these new ads. They just seem like such a faulty use of details, that honestly, I think they are embarrassing. In that spirit I share the following (sorry, can't paste the image myself as it is not mine and I don't have permission to be pasting it):

An alternative comparison between PC dude and Mac dude.

I found this quite entertaining.

My XP can boot in fifteen seconds, ten even on a fresh install.

I have never seen that.

I don't classify 'boot' to be the time it takes to show a logon screen.

For me, it's the time drive head thrashing ceases, all systray icons are complete and the cursor is a static pointer.

Time for me....generally just over 3 minutes.

I keep my startup items clean This PC is 2.8 GHz O/C'ed to 3.63. Also have disabled lots of services.

Including login time, it is about 30 seconds total. (Also excludes navigating through a sea of boot menus )

That's about it for me normally, 'til everything's loaded, but I'm having major issues after a case change and now it feels like a week. Worse still, my primary (IDE) drive with my main OS isn't showing up in 'My Computer' or 'Device manager'....so I'm having to boot into my secondary OS on another (SATA) drive, but then can only do so if the mobo installation disc is present in one of my ROM drives...of which one is also missing, my DVD ROM is disabled in BIOS and can't be enabled (by me, anyway).

Grrrr!!! I get my case changed for one with better ventilation and more fans for better cooling, and it comes back almost inoperable, missing the essential 'guts' I depend on to do mostly everything..'cept gaming. Shoot, can't even boot into Vista...just my gaming OS with practically bugger all else on it...had to enable the net and install Firefox to get on line.

They've obviously stuffed something up, so it's another inconvenience and back to the shop in the morning cos I'm just not well enough (arthritis is giving me hell) and don't have the patience to figure it out myself.

Oh well, these things are sent to try us Besides, could've been worse...much worse! Could've been not able to get my daily WC fix! LOL.

Edit: would've started my own thread about this but still can't create threads, auto quote or use smilies, etc

Touche'!!

We keep coming back to "it's all about choice".

BTW - my notebook boots in under 2 minutes as outlined by Jafo (and that includes - *cringe* - NIS 2006).

Yes, I agree. Both offer a unique quality specific only to each. Capitalism needs this, it's called competetion.

how often do you fresh install on your pc

Every year or two, not because it needs it, but because I just want a clean start again.

Also, I have OS X booting on this PC in 8 seconds.. beat that on a Mac

well a pc gets slow with time, macs dont, bout the vid, well some of us dont really play games, but bout the hardware come on, video card, in my powerbook i can change, in most of pc's hell its integrated in the motherboard, a powermac g4 that is way old boots faster than a pIII (same age) with xp, and when mac carried up to 1gb RAM, what the pIII pc cant even imagine, the pc got stuck in 512. And well, powermac g5 dual 5 secs, i picture a quad (never used one ) loading just bout when u press the button, imagine when the new powermac era comes, with the new server like duo processors, i dont think any pc will beat that.good things come in small packages, that's why they are lots of pc's out there. i dislike windows cus its terrible organization on the system, and well, when it comes on top of the line, mac will be up there, cus i really dont think vista is gonna shoot that far, the specs on some year old pc's wont handle it, and well, osx tiger loaded on a 1998 pc, running as fast as a 15 second boot, wonder if a 2000 pc will run vista as ast, with aero of course (what's the point if u don't have the goodies, at least not the security, on beta2 up to 12 svchost processes running) so it all comes down to choice, oh and if i had a pc again i would buy a dell.

and when mac carried up to 1gb RAM, what the pIII pc cant even imagine, the pc got stuck in 512.

It REALLY pays to do your research.

I have a P111/500 [Abit BX6 Slot1] right here which has a gig of ram 4x256meg sticks of PC133....and as I recall that wasn't the board's limit, either....

And....there's a word, nay, 2 words....'sentence' and 'paragraph'....they are your friends.... Spell checker

My XP Pro PC feels like it is booting up fully in half the time to what it was a couple of days ago. It's amazing what a shiny new case can do....with 3 fans (front, rear, one directly facing the CPU), my rig feels like its flying along, running more efficiently than ever, not that I thought so yesterday when I got it home.....

Yeah, the idiots connected up my main HD and DVD ROM bass ackwards. Im no technogeek, but I'm sure I'd have even done 'em right....me thinks the search'll be on for another puter shop'll be on if they stuff it up again. Oh well, at least they fixed it, and for my inconvenience, they gave me a USB hub I need to plug in a video grabber device I didn't have a spare rear port for

I was having poor ventilation, temperature issues with my old case...the CPU would become temperamental at times and would want to lock/freeze, but now she's simply cruising even when multi-tasking, so I'm happy.

I have Windows XP SP2 om my PC and my brother have an iBook. And I have a LOT of trouble with my PC. USB devices simply stops working and the PS2(!!)keyboard stops working to, hangs, graphic problems, you name it...even that I have AMD CPU, Abit motherboard, nVidia graphic.
On one year I think I have re-installed Windows one time every two months, because it just crashes... -sigh-
But my brother, you know, his iBook just work instead, we have tried many different external devices....plug in....and they just work..., but in Windows you must have many of programs just to get the shit work. LOL.
And the uptime his got om his iBook, I mean I can't have my XP running for more than two days then I can't use my computer, because it totally locked up.
So I will NEVER own a Windows-"computer" again, thats for sure...

lolapoa  ...last time I checked I did not nor have I ever said 'mac "zealots" are RUDE and HARSH'.

Please do not misquote or misrepresent.  [This is another good reason to at least TRY to punctuate or separate statements.  When you do not you are liable to cause confusion instead of communication.  Find a gap and press the 'enter' key]....

Simple statement is....P111 vintage PC computers CAN handle more than 512meg of ram.

lolapoa.. If you feel so negative towards the PC then why have you come to WC?
Just curious, that's all....

Out of interest, I just tried to spec out a G5 to as close to my Athlon 4400+, 2Gb DDR, 2xGeForce 7600GT as possible. It came out at 3 1/2 times the cost and still wouldn't get close to the gaming performance of my pc...

No Admin Jafo, i think u didint quite get it, all pc likers (again, no zealots in pc! how could they be!) take us a zealots and get as fanatic.

Meowy, i came to WC just to not get my mac book pro depressed with the LUNA theme, as i cant handle excel for mac, and its a program i use often at work, its the same as the one in pc, except all versions use de same formulas as the one in english for pc, and i only know how to use them in spanish LOL, and as i said, windows is a nice OS, and as i differ with all here, i accept that its good, sometimes unstable but good, what i really find interesting is how pc "likers" repell osX soo baad, even though is a great system as well...wonder why, maybe not the popular opinion is the correct one! Oh, and i mind saying again, well the mac ads are terribly rude, except from the hi im a pc, and im a pc too, that one has spark, dont blame apple, microsoft did in its time waaay more dirty things, that's how the market works, just search for QDOS, and see how dirty microsoft is.

I think he was talking about paragraphs. Just break up your sentences. And if an English teacher starts lecturing you on paragraph structure, I will smack her down!

Paragraphs are your friend. And your english is very good.

Super Wizop Fuzzy Logic, did u spec it out with the quad powermac, a dual powermac, or simply an imac, just take point in that sometimes we dont compare things that are the same, in a case of a quad powermac, maybe the pc will have more RAM, but as far as procesing goes, the quad should be faster (i mean 4 cores....) and the vcard on macs dont work the same that with a pc, for instance, while running basic 30 rendering software for the 64 mb integrated intel vcard on the macbook (which is bad anyway) is more stable that running the same or similar program in the same vcard for pc, same goes with ram,osx is more efficent in that point,128 mb vcard for a mac is more than enough for medium rendering, but for instance, the powermac (dual, quad coming in a month) where we make the high dpi and large pixel ads for street use, has a xtremely high performance (dont know for sure specs, but it should be heavier that any internal pc one, its internal not external)i know its as hheavy as the external we have on a pc, so that's the point bout mac, gaming should go that close, even though mac has not much variety of games, something some ppl cant live without, i dont reall are a game freak, but to play good games, i have my ppc powered xbox 360, and take it from me, if they really wanted to make games on mac, they would certanly run better than on pc, its bout the OS mostly, but its not afforable as most of us use are macs for work and really dont play much.
