PC vs. Mac

PC vs. Mac

-or- the suit vs. the slacker

By now, I am sure most of us have seen the new round of Mac vs. PC commercials. You know, the one with the middle age, sort of uptight looking, fuddy-duddy dude in a suit representing a PC, and the young, hip, cool, laid-back dude in old jeans and a T-shirt representing a Mac.

I have seen a couple of variations, but they all focus on the same thing. They all are trying to convey the same message: Macs are just cool and "work", whereas PCs are out of touch, laborious and problematic. Of course, I find it odd that so much of the advertising lately is on the hardware (considering I am typing this entry on my Windows laptop with Intel Core Duo processors, an pretty nice ATI graphics card, more RAM than a Mac Book and a larger HD than a Mac Book, at easily a few hundred dollars lower cost).

Nevertheless, I am not a Mac hater. In fact, I fully anticipate owning a Mac someday, when I can afford to have one IN ADDITION to my Windows computers. But I have to admit, I really don't care for these new ads. They just seem like such a faulty use of details, that honestly, I think they are embarrassing. In that spirit I share the following (sorry, can't paste the image myself as it is not mine and I don't have permission to be pasting it):

An alternative comparison between PC dude and Mac dude.

I found this quite entertaining.

I fixed it. The link works now.

Thank you, ID, it's appreciated.

I ran Vista with full Aero and effects on a GeForce 5200 fine. I do have a 6200 now, mostly for gaming.

My 6200 64meg runs it admirably, and given that it's a lower end card, me thinks Mac zealots use the 'but it won't run' theory/slur to de-value Vista while espousing overly embellished MAC OS-X specs to dissuade would be Windows Customers.....

The World must be a very lonely place for the Mac zealot....being that if you give 'em a word in edgeways to sprout about Macs, you never shut 'em up again (case in point: lolapoa ) ....given they were placed on the endangered species list for being a percentage of a minority market share of just 10%

Sooo, why does this extaordinary phenomenon occur...the Mac zealot who'd talk under water with a mouthful of marbles to convince you their love of all that is Mac is valid? Could it be there's not enough of 'em to go around and they're unable to form a social network of mutual interest, and if they espy a vacant ear, they'll attach themselves to the lobe, much like a limpet to a rock, to acquire an audience that otherwise would not be captive?????

Personally, given his vast personal wealth, me thinks Steve Jobs should set up rehab clinics worldwide for these poor souls who've faithfully espoused everything Mac and placed him on their Christmas card list...it's the least he could do, and I'd have somewhere to go if the Mac gene is activated when I get mine and start wearing 'Apple is Best' tee-shirts, caps and underwear.

UMMM....HELLO, DID I SAY NVIDA? NOOOOO DID I SAY ATI...NOOOO I SAID INTEL INTEGRATED GRAPHCIS!!! HAS SOMEONE MENTION IT NOOOOOO, its not a bad vcard, but in MY LAP TOP did not work as it should with vista, and hey,IDIOT, windows is nice, but u guys THINK IN A BOX, come on!!! get out of the box,and YES, apples ads ARE DISHONEST, but since when has microsoft been so honest, can someone answer that? and as i said, u guys stick with ur pc's, tweak the GUI and make it look like os x or something that u like, why don't u get linux and build ur own shell.... IDIOT is the guy that sticks with a idea, IDIOT is NOT a person with various points of view, the apple ads disgust me i must say, but it makes me sick how many times has microsoft been doing fraudulent acts (can anyone say
"court")im NOT saying windows is shit, im saying i hate the idea my "recent cutting edge" pc will run vista like crap cus the vcard is not compatible, and probably when they fix it i already bought a new one, windows does buisness work very good, and that's what is meant to do. I think OSX does have its benefits, it does better graph rendering (can anybody say "cars" "the incredibles" "PIXAR")but it surelly makes worksheets, and various other things a pain in the ass. So its all on accepting the limitations of each OS, and unfortunatelly, some ZEALOTS dont.

Oh and by the way not everuthing MAC or APPLE is lovable, I hate the Ipod, well its just me, as its the wonders of every pc too! oh and the old flat screens looked like if u pushed a little it would fall off, and hated that too, and mac os 9 Definite failure,it might have only 10% of the market share, but i still say,¿why settle with the SAME? guess it might seem unique using a mac then! Im still working on windows vista beta 2 on my Mac book Pro, smooooth, nice system, stolen Exposè (sorry but its the truth) and runs smoother than any other windows OS iv'e used even in beta stage.

lolapoa  ...I think determining what are the failings or strengths between Vista and OSX is an utterly pointless exercise.

No-one publicly [or probably anywhere else] has anything BUT a Beta of Vista to compare with a released product.  Drawing conclusions from this is profoundly flawed.

Needless to say many people on this site have both Macs AND PCs but, since Wincustomize.com is actually Windows-centric you are really pushing the proverbial uphill against a ground-swell of opposing opinion [and/or more experienced], particularly when much of what you expound is not based in perhaps even a semblance of reality.

So you have a laptop of dubious quality that does not run a Beta of an OS well.  That much has been established.

I have a bicycle that would not win the Tour De France.

Both statements have about as much validity in the debate of whose OS is superior.

Not that it actually matters one iota either way....

Hello everyone,

This is coming from a person who uses a MAC all day for work in an ad agency(sencond largest in the world) and who owns 3 PC's and one Mac.
First, I prefer the PC a thousand times than the MAC.

To make sure everyone undertand what kind hardware I am using here are the specs.
AT WORK: Dual 2.3GHZ G5, 6GB of Ram (yes 6), 250GB Hard drive, GeForce 7800GT, 23" Display.
AT HOME: AMD64 X2 4200+ (Dual core 2.2GHZ), 2GB of Ram, 4x 250GB Hard drives, Geforce 7900GT, Dell 20" widescreen and Samsung 17" Flatpanels.

Here are my points:
The MAC running FASTER than a PC? No way is that true. I use Photoshop at work along with Flash, Dreamwever, After Effects, and some times Premire. Along with those programs we use little apps like Swift 3D etc, Sorenson Squeeze, and some audio apps (MP3 trimmer) and Apple Loops.

While the G5 IS fast but it is not faster than a PC. When rendering using After Effects the MAC is some time 25% slower than the PC. Even using a small little 3D app like Swift 3D the MAC was 2 hours slower rendering a 300 frame simple rotating logo animation with lighting and textures than my PC. I can go on and on, Photoshop takes minutes longer to open multiple photos at a time than the PC, MAYA run much slower on a MAC, 3D Max is NOT available on a MAC, saving files to the harddrive is slower, messy windows everywhere. Not to mention how HOT that thing runs. These are factors that matter when actually "using a computer". I do not care about how "pretty the mac looks" all I care is about performance. There is no way that a MAC is faster than a PC with comparable hardware. I experience it everyday. I can prove it, run multiple test and post screen shots.

To the MAC's credit it does have a few little nifty features as other have mentioned. But, and this is a fact. The MAC runs Windows XP "BETTER" than it does it's own operating system. The MAC "hides" alot of admin features, settings, amoung other things from the user to protect itself, granted. But it sucks for a power user.

Lastly, here are some great things about owning a PC. A huge amount of software is available for the PC than on a MAC. Programs are made and optimized for PC's first than ported over to the MAC (if you are lucky). You can find quick answers to almost any problem for a PC than on a MAC, and no it's not because you have less problems because I often have to use my Ctl+AppleKey+Esc to force quite my programs. We have Windows Blinds . You have Shapeshifter (I use it). It sucks! We can make our PC's "personal". You have to live with OS X. We have loads of hardware available to us. You do not. Firewire is useless, USB 2.0 is faster. We CAN have "pretty" PC's but I prefer my coolermaster CM Stacker 830 case. This debate can go on forever and so can I but as the post says it's a matter of preference and as my better performing, better hardware and more, more software, power user friendly, stable OS (in my case), wonderful XP PC choice. I prefer MY "Personal Computer".

Thank you all for this great post. I hope I do not angry anyone.

Choices, weird on the slow rendering....pretty weird, i work in a animation studio (largest in the world) and i have no slow rendering in any of are common used, same company made and branded software, even though we DO use pc, is for the paper work and other goodies the XP is good at.No, there is much less apps for OSX, and u can change the look, even though most of the time pc guys make their xp look like the aqua, its just likable. What i dont get is how small the monitor in ur job is, what do u do in the mac? the ads made by us are made in much more capable computers, specailly the spectacular street ads, but what can i say, its just in choices, if ur making billboards tha mac is not near to be enough, and with that display i think thats not viable...but i must say, macromedia still runs better in windows, adobe right now does cus its not universal binary but will soon recover the original speed and its faster than a pc.And take point the software ur using is simplly the standard in everything its meant for, im not sure if u have seen the pixar own software for rendering, but is surelly better than 3dsmax, even though if i name some u will probably never heard of them, there privately own label software. bet that wont work as fast on a pc, i guess...never really tried it.

(Back in the 90s I never thought I would say this about a Mac, but.....)

The Command line is your friend.

Something funny happened today. I tried to watch a streaming video with quicktime, it was impossible. I was using firefox with it. On Windows Media Player, No Problem.

PC'S are cheap and functional. Mac's are expensive and limited. Mac's may work well but they only support Apple hardware(Mainly). PC's do everything macs can and then some. For the cost conscious, pcs are the bomb. Thanx to sony, pcs are also stylish, so macs can't claim that for themselves. And for customization, objectdock has that well covered. And with the advent of xp the blue screen of death is almost totally gone.

90% of the planet can't be wrong - think about it the primary reason for a person buying a Mac is because they hate Bill Gates, the real irony is they also aspire to become what he is...................

Makes no sense at all....snot nosed Steve Jobs by far is the more despicable of the two.

If personalities were for sale, Job's wouldn't be able to pay anyone to take his, much less give it away. Thank goodness the majority purchase computers based on need and functionality, rather than CEO personalities.

Arise my bastard child!  ARISE!

After a long month of quiescence it is good to see this come up from the depths of the forums.

On topic, I had the opportunity to educate a colleague of mine who was not aware of some of the excellent functions of Windows, think that the Mac was inherently better or easier.  I did not dissuade him from his potential purchase of a Mac, just educated him that everything he wanted to do on a Mac could be done on a PC just was well.

That's the best thing, advise people of their options and let them decide suits their needs the best. I just hate it when a fanboys try to hard sell me something that may be perfect for them but not necessarily for me, which I guess is why I hate damned advertising so much. When I want or need something, I like to get out in the stores to do my own research and comparisons, to ask questions about products but not have them forced down my throat before they were posed.

I will get a Mac for myself, not because of any fanboys or advertising but simply because I want one to play with....oh how I love new toys.

It's nice to see lolapoa is actually shut up.

Don't speak too soon, Meowy....ooops, too late! Now your words'll come back to bite us all on the arse.
