The voice of the multiplayer fans!

I read through a post that Frogboy put up a long while ago, in which he stated the reasons that multiplayer is not an existing feature in Galactic Civ II. It was a well thought out and well written post, and the reasons that it was not included with the initial release of the game were all valid, particularly given the price of the game. The main point that was made at the end of the post was that if enough voices were heard, then multiplayer would be considered as part of a paid expansion.

I understand the need for 'quanitity of people' over 'vocality of a few' in this matter, since ultimately what matters the most is how many of the fans of Galactic Civ II would be willing to pay another twenty or thirty bucks for an expansion that includes this feature. I would like to be among the first to say that I am solidly among them, and I have another two or three friends (alas, they are too lazy to post ) that would gladly buy such an expansion as well.

I am hoping that this thread will help give voice to those of us that are greatly interested in the addition of this feature. The AI in this game is excellent - but there is nothing like the feeling of knowing that one of your friends is at the receiving end of your empire's might, and nothing like the ability to team up with a friend and try to tackle the best of what the AI can throw at you.

So then, who's with me? Speak up!

We've heard the voice of people who want multiplayer again..and again..and again..

Multiplayer is definitely something that we would like to do in a future expansion. But it won't be in the first expansion since it's a pretty big job to do it right.

I apologize if this is something that has been hounded on by people (particularly pre-release). I'm among the people that decided to give the game a try after having passed on Galactic Civ 1, and I figured that there might be a bunch of folks like myself that had not been active participants in the forums that might like to express their opinions on the matter as well.

After all, if more (new or 'veteran') people profess their interest in MP, I would think that it would be viewed as a greater priority, right?

Again, sorry if this is a topic that has been pounded into the ground... but in the short time that I've 'been here', I haven't heard much said about it, and wanted to see what the pulse of the community was with regards to it.

i vote yes to multiplayer! this would be a great LAN party game! maybe even have more empires playing at once! in a GINORMOUS galaxy size!

4 player co-op vs 9 AI omg!

I'd certianly pay extra in an expansion for multiplayer.
Even the limited ability to add one more non-AI player and rotate them at the keyboard would be nice.
Both my son and I like the game, playing against each other would be wonderful.

There is a very long thread on this subject and while you bringing it up again isn't a problem it was beat to death in that thread and it has been clearly stated that it may happen but will not be a priority. That probably means about 2 years minimum

I'd say that creates something of a Catch 22. If nobody new comes forward and professes an interest in MP, then I would think that the priority of it would fall further down on the 'things to add' list. OTOH, if people continue to express an interest in it, they might be accused of not letting the topic go.

It's definitely important to me, and I figure that if it's important for anyone else, they can pop in and say so here. If nothing else, it'll help to keep the feature request in the forefront of people's minds, and let the devs know that there is an ongoing interest in it.

PS - Thank you for the swift response, Frogboy. I appreciate the fact that you guys are so active with the community with your games - I haven't seen that anywhere near as much with other companies. I had just wanted to throw in my two cents on the MP subject.

I'll just drop in here right quick and say I too would love a multiplayer expansion. I'm a huge fan of single player games but in the last couple of years lan play has kept alot of games alive for me, I absolutely love this game regardless, but I'd just love for this game to join Frozen Throne and Zero Hour in me and my friends' weekly lan party.

The multipalyer thing would be nice and Frogboy says they will eventually do it. That said, I shudder everytime I think about a multiplayer game. The length of time to complete a game could stretch into years.

You can take my vote for *no* multiplayer ever.

And yes, bah humbug to you all

I want MP, I just bought this game on impulse (I was looking for something in space to play, saw this, asked the guy at EB, he said everyone and their grandmother wanted it), and was surprised when I didn't see any MP. This game would have a perfect setup for MP, it just fels like it's missing something. And I think that all players should do things at the same time, then once all Turn buttons are pressed it goes to the next week.
Anyway, YES for MP.

Hell yes, MP!

I would like a fully integrated "Hot Seat" but other forms of multiplayer would be useless to me as I don't do lan parties, and refuse to play online games (offline games are addictive enough for me thank you) .

multiplayer ftw!!!!!!!1111

I'm kinda new to turnbased strategy games and couldn't imagine how they could work in MP, but I guess it could work like Three60 said. I'm a bigger fan of SP games then MP and I love GalCiv 2 the way it is, but when I think about it MP would be great and there would be no problem paying that extra bit of money.

I agree with CB76 for the most part, HOTSEAT is the only way to go multiplayer-wise, fully online would take too long to complete, but any number of players sharing a keyboard would be much more user-friendly.

That being said, I see no problem with someone coming up with a mod that could do a HOTSEAT game of GCII

Why can't there just be a poll about who wants MP and who doesn't? (who wants to count how many people are for and how many against anyway?)

Along the line of keeping the addition of multiplayer a priority......
Over the years I've developped the inability to play single player games. No matter how great or how much fun the game is, I begin to feel like I'm wasting my time sitting at home in front of the new-generation's 'idiot box'. We have my ex to thank for that. Multiplayer games I can still rationalise as being a social event, so I'm in the clear there

Incidently, I believe the reason that GC2 has done so well is simply because they have the monopoly of this type of game. Large is the number of gamers that desperately awaited the release of another Turn-Based-Space-Strategy game. That makes it sound like I'm ripping on GC2, but I'm really not. I've only played the demo, and have nothing but good impressions. What will really make this game a true success, is the continued support by the dev team in terms of patches and forum support. In this, you truly have your publisher to thank. For an example at failure, look to Moo3. Infragrams demanded the products release, forcing the developpers to throw what they had into a box for the shelves. They released one patch a few months down the line which fixed bugs and removed features that weren't working or never implemented, and then disbanded. All because the damn publisher wouldn't support the game. Such potential, such a shame.

Anyways, the point of all this being, that my buddy an I still play Moo3. In fact, I'm about to go over to his house now and get some LAN action with some of the later mods, 'Strawberry'. We haven't purchased our copies of GC2, we're still waiting on the multiplayer, and 'm sure we aren't the only ones. Once is comes out, it's a no-brainer purchase.

I just wanted to open the avenue that suggested a region of untapped gamers, in relation to sales, that could be reached via the addition of a multiplayer component.

It is strange how this discussion got somehow "religious".

I am the only of my buddies playing this game so far, and I also have a strange feeling playing solely against the AI. It is a bit like playing chess against a machine, just not the same thing.

I could bring some of my friends into the game if MP was there.

Turn-based multiplayer??? No thanks. Keep it SP. It's more gooder.

Have you tried it?

I love it, particularly in a LAN setting. Even with just one friend, it works better than some people think. If each person knows the game pretty well, you can breeze through most turns quickly enough, and when you want to spend a turn designing a couple of ships or micro-managing your colonies a bit more than usual, you just coordinate it with your friend(s). "Hey, I need to tweak a couple of ships designs, lets take a bit more time on this turn." Then both sides can take a turn to put in some detail work, or one person can run and grab a drink and use the john, or whatever.

Works better than some people think. Unfortunately, my friends and I feel like we're kinda stuck playing MOO2 when we want a good MP sci-fi 4X buzz.

I don't see the whole "give GC2 multiplayer" argument, it just seems like a few people don't like that fact that unlike most games, this game does not have multiplayer.
