I highly recommend the Lensman series by "Doc" E.E. Smith. I know that's been mentioned previously, but as a dedicated fan of the series I have to bring it up. I'm pretty sure you can find reprinted editions of the books on amazon.com. Before there was Star Wars, there was Lensman. [e digicons][/e] Lots of memorable scenes in those books. I also loved The Forever War , it is a must read if you want an alternative t

Has anyone thought of creating custom races for Galactic Civilizations II using their Spore creatures? You could build up several races in Spore, take screens of them, load them into Gal Civ II and modify their stats based on the creature in Spore. It could be almost like an extension of Spore's space phase. I think that could be pretty cool. After I play with the UFO for a little while, I'll switch to Gal Civ, start a game with some custom Spore based races and start wo

I have Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Sturmovik 1946. I've played them extensively and am looking for other flight simulators, preferably military or space themed. I know there's plenty of freeware out there, but retail titles seem to be almost non-existant. Does anyone know where I can find flight simulators? The genre seems to be pretty dead these days.

I did have mega events on, and the plague occurred. So I guess that's why those things happened. Although, I don't think I would have ever connected that to the plague. I thought all it did was just lower the galaxy's population.

I was playing a GalCiv II game, all was going well. Then all of a sudden for no apparent reason, my logistics rating went from 24 (or 25, don't remember) to zero. I couldn't think of any in-game explanation for this. Also, a lot of my custom ships completely disappeared as well from the shipyard screen. I didn't do anything to the game files or touch any of the settings that I think could bring this about. Has anyone experienced anything similar? If you need to know more I'll r

One of the most entertaining aspects of this game is how lopsided some of the planetary battles can seem. Not that I mind, as long as it works out for me. I love to imagine how 2000 troops can take out tens of thousands. I've taken entire planets with similar odds, it never gets old. Its kind of like a sci-fi version of that film "300" I try to come up with answers based on other fictional s

If you could put together an elite team of game developers to do a project, who would it be? And what would the game be? Here's my idea: The Game Concept: A multi-genre title that combines turn based 4X gaming, RTS, 1st person shooting and simulation. Game Flow: The player would start out in a 4x game like Civilization (it would be on earth). Their goal would be to advance through time to eventually discovering FTL travel. Battles between na

I've noticed after a few games that the AI doesn't seem to defend their planets. I thought this was because of the difficulty level. So I started a game on challenging. Still, in all of the AI planets I clicked on, their star ports are almost entirely empty except for a few non-combat ships. Now I know they've got the money and resources to raise armed fleets. So how come they don't do it? I suppose that should be a good thing, because it makes it easier for me to conquer them <img src

Thanks, I'll definitely check out the Fall from Heaven 2 mod. Europa Universalis 3 sounds interesting too. I played Battle for Wesnoth, it was alright, but I've got plenty of those game types on my handhelds. Yeah, I try not to get caught up in graphics. Considering the minimalist approach taken by Dominions though, I still think its visuals are pretty impressive for what they're worth. Definitely basic, but charming in its own right.

I'm happy with GalCiv II, but I'm currently looking to explore other titles in the TBS genre. I have some of the obscurer ones like: Dominions III (incredible game, worth a look) Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic Supreme Ruler 2010 (not so good, but I thought I'd mention it anyway) I've also got some better known ones such as Civilization IV and Heroes of Might and Magic V and GalCiv 1 w/expansion pack (of course). Can anyone recommend some other ga

I find that things get too boring if there are no wars going on in a GC II game. I would like to play more action oriented matches. I realize there are many ways to play and win at the game, but I think the military victory is the most appealing. I have nothing against the other victory conditions, I just prefer the combat aspects of the game. I love the ship designer and that's one of the reasons why I want to play war heavier games. It gives me a lot more opportunities to create my ow

I hope nobody minds this hopefully entertaining topic I decided to start. It's a little out of boredom and curiosity, but here goes: If you were a member of your race's military (Base your answer on a specific one, like the Drengin, if you want) where would you want to be in it? Here are some options: The Navy (fighter pilot, crew member, officer, etc.) In this career choice, your chances for enemy encounters are fairly high. However, the fatality rate would pro

I was thinking to myself about possible mods for GCII and I came up with a couple of neat ideas. I don't know if it's possible though, because it would probably require modding the combat viewer. Anyway, one of my ideas would be to have a cockpit camera mode, so you could see from a pilot's point of view. My other idea was to have combat chatter. Where at different points in the battle, you hear voices from the ships. (Like the units in Homeworld). The things they say would vary dependi

I try not to get too fancy when it comes to ship naming. I find that the most practical labels are best. I'll usually give each ship class a 2-3 letter abbreviation, followed by a descriptive term. It will have something to do with my race's theme if its interesting enough. I'm playing a Robotech themed game right now (an anime series, if you didn't know) and I have a large battleship type called the HD-Bernard. HD standing for Heavy Destroyer (not High Def although that would be

I'm curious as to what specific strategies GC players employ to protect their freighters. I tried equipping them with some weapons to defend themselves. Unfortunately it didn't work out too well, as they couldn't compete with actual military ships. I also thought about attaching fighter squadrons, maybe in numbers of 2-4 to follow them along their routes. I don't remember for sure, but I think that actually made it worse. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Hmm.gif" bor

Actually, I was thinking that a better idea might be for an original setting that makes use of earlier science fiction ideas. They could be derived from a variety of sources. That way more people may be able to add something. The original Star Trek, Lensman, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and especially the material to come out of movies during the 50's and 60's, like Plan 9 From Outer Space I would

I wasn't sure how many GCII players have read the Lensman series, but I've read some posts with references to the works. I just want to say that it is my all time favorite science fiction series. I would love nothing more than to see a project based on the books for GalCiv II. I think the gameplay mechanics (especially the battle system) are perfectly suited to fit the theme (if you disregard the ether theory of course. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Laugh.gif" bo

I re-installed GC II after a break to play some other games. I'm trying to find the mod that allowed you to use hulls for ship parts, but I can't remember what it was called. I tried to recognize it by searching through the mod library but I couldn't find it. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

I think 1.1 did something to the A.I. Played my first game w/o tech trading, it was a normal, standard GC game, except for the no tech trades. It was extremely easier than I've ever known previous GC games to be, I was doing way too good and the A.I. didn't seem to be doing anything whatsoever. They weren't building ships, they weren't trading, they weren't engaging in diplomacy. They were sitting idly by while I took over their planets one after the other. I had to think something was wrong
