Several HOURS! That's something. Could you try the latest internal build at: https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.4.5-j138-Setup.exe to share more? This copy has extended logging ability which will help collect data and send a report. (1) Uninstall, using the option to "keep your settings". Reboot. (2) Install the new version. Yikes! Well, no way to prove a negative – but, you can try using the option in the bottom of the Welcome screen to disable Fences, reboot, and from then on Fences will not be loaded at all. Since it's intermittent, disabling doesn't make Fences the smoking gun, but perhaps you'll see it happens anyways and can narrow out. Or, find some correlation. We don't however do anything to modify the icon image list in any way however, so, this would be the first time in the 15yrs
Sounds good. Please let us know if you see the issue come back and we'll continue to look deeper. That should though be the end of it. (You installed, after reboot pressed "yes" to one of the User Account Control prompts, rebooted again, and the prompts were gone thereafter. Correct?) We find often that when this problem occurs, often the user has manually turned on this option as some sort of debug step. But it doesn't sound like you've done that here, so I'm wondering if some softwa
Hi @rikinn, we received your report; thank you for uploading. Based on your report, could you try again with this? https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.4.5-j138-Setup.exe It's possible this fixes the issue, it's possible that this just gives us more data to work with. As before, uninstall/reset and let's go through the process again. Don't forget to enabled Advanced Erro
:( We do have a new build that attempts to resolve this (and very likely does). It turns off the system setting that somehow became enabled on that system that requires Fences.exe to be run as admin, thus causing every single launch to bring up this prompt. Steps: (1) Install update here (v5.84) https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.4.1-j135-Setup.exe (2) Reboot</
Great! Thank you for capturing this. We’re testing out functionality that might be able to fix this automatically. It’s unclear how it got there on your machine, but hopefully this fixes it! Stay tuned, and will update you on this thread in a day or so. 🙏
Also, can you see if you get "Fences wants to change settings blah blah" prompt when you change screen resolutions? (One, or multiple, etc?) And if so, again hit that "Show more details" and screen capture? Thanks 🙏 There may be multiple different things getting run here. This will help understand what's going on, each with the "every few minutes" one you mention as well as "after a screen resolution change / monitor add/remove etc".
Glad to hear! Can you click the "Show more details" button that comes up, and send a screen capture? It should give more details about what it's trying to execute, which will help us get to the root of it. It should look something like this → <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/6/50/650776/4e8e7ad5-5560-42a8-985d-d7b4ed9f9dd1.png"
Update – our mistake – please give the verison https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.6-j133-Setup.exe a try (v5.82 Rev 6, not the v5.82 Rev 5 previously mentioned). I have edited our team's previous post to point to Rev 6 as well. This copy has a fix that might help your situation. And in either event, we'd love to you get your log file to look into this issue more.

Hi stonline, appreciate the effort to submit the report. Seeing in your log our helper app fail to execute due to an error code "ERROR_ELEVATION_REQUIRED", which, my mistake, I think we solved with https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.6-j133-Setup.exe . Please give that one a go and repeat the process? (Install, reboot, fiddle with it a bit, and then submit log.) Feel free
Hi, to add on to this – this version "5.82 Revision 5" is the same as 5.83 but with extra debug information. https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe You can follow the instructions at https://forums.stardock.com/529991/page/1 to submit us a report, which will contain extended debug informatio

Ah, those are a lot of leftover files from one of the libraries we're using. Thanks for pointing out, we'll get those cleaned up.
Similar question, if you change screen resolutions then move icons around (then wait a few seconds for it to save), are those changes remembered when you reboot?
Hi hpeach, does restoring from a backup resolve the issue? You can access your backups from the Layout tab, by clicking "Restore a backup" I'm also wondering if they continue to fall out after subsequent reboots. <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/6/50/650776/be9397a1-a075-4150-8edb-b2c2ec879d35.png" width="617" he
It looks like Windows' icon spacing may need resetting. Please give this a try (then log out and log back in) and see if it helps?
Hey SeaBobWire, great qu! 5.8.2.x was part of a lineage of debug-heavy builds, 5.8.3.4 represents a production-branch build with the learnings from 5.8.2.x integrated. Glad the problem was found and solved quickly; thanks likewise for your & @all's help!
Hi Jaymitch23, the next time this happens, could you please send us your debug log? (And as well feel free to upload a copy of the debug log now as well?). You can find it in the folder "%appdata%\Stardock\Fences\TroubleshootingLog"; the file is "fences_debug_info.txt".
