Had this event popup today after opening the Fences app. It seems odd that it expected an older version. Attempted to backup the registry entries using the bat file and running it from a Windows PowerShell. The script executed without errors but the .reg files it said it exported can't be found (I searched my entire system with the Everything utility).

After further experience with this problem, the image shift occurs only on a Win11 restart (even multiple times) and never on a shutdown/reboot. If I disable Fences, will the settings remain so that I return to the same state after re-enabling it? Any way to backup my Fences settings?
Why would Fences cause Deskscape images to switch monitors?
Win11 Home v10.0.26100 Build 26100, Deskscapes v11.02, Fences v4.22. I'm having a similar issue on a system with 3 monitors (1 static image, 2 dreams). Occasionally on daily startup, Deskscapes shifts the applied images and takes my Fences with them...sort of. Images on the outer two monitors are swapped but the fences are shifted left by 1 monitor. Reapplying the fences from a backup doesn't resolve the problem. In my experience lately, performing
I've been a fan of Fences since v2 and will continue to use v4 for as long as it's supported. However, on the face of it, the move to SaaS for a minor OS utility that originally cost less than $10 for a full license with minor updates between major versions is clearly not in the interest of the customer. That, or SD has a problem with its business model and they've been poorly pricing for years. The upgrade paths are, IMO, too expensive for the utility of the software and
Sean, Thanks for the reply and, yes, I meant your Groupy UI pages. To me, at least, these are a subset on your Documentation page but I understand what you're saying. I will await any additions made to the Groupy UI pages. I won't have much, if any, time to draft and submit additions so I can't promise anything. I didn't realize you intended that detailing the UI pages would be a community effort.
Basj, I find these documentation pages mostly unhelpful since they simply repeat the text contained in the application without edification. It's as if someone wrote the in-app text (the briefest text practical for the UI), copied it, and inserted it on the webpage "documentation" page. Repetition isn't help. The documentation entries should be expansive. For example, I find no clear, detailed explanation of the intent of and interaction between Block / Allow
Might I suggest that since that portion of the UI suggests one can block AND permit application grouping, users be permitted to do so by entry. As it currently reads it's all or nothing - either all listed applications are blocked or all are permitted depending on the state of the check box.
I think I found it. Adding Firefox to the Grouping Rules > Block / Allow Applications, and ensuring the "Only allow specified applications to be in a Group" option is disabled seems to work. Groupy2 now allows me to move a Firefox tab without Groupy creating a new Firefox window automatically grouped with the origin window. Under Grouping Rules > Automatic window grouping, the note at the bottom says, "You can create new automatic groupings from the Groupy menu on th
Ahh, under Groupy2 UI. Sorry, completely missed it.
Groupy2 v2.1, latest release as of 23 July 23. In Groupy1, I was able to establish - by some means lost to time - the functionality that I could drag a single Firefox tab to an empty part of the desktop or to the desktop top edge on another screen to create a new Firefox window with just that moved tab. Groupy2 creates a new Firefox window with that tab but immediately groups it with the origin window, moving both Groupy tabs to the destination screen. I have to move that
Groupy2's in-application description of what each option does and how to implement certain tasks is insufficient. Where does one go to get detailed explanations of how to accomplish tasks that seem much easier to do in Groupy1? The "Get Help" link in the About dialog is not helpful since the topics found there appear to be mostly self-help diagnostic, sales and change log pages. There are no how-tos or proper help pages. For example, grouping rules that I created in
I hope that helps but can offer more assistance should you run into trouble.
Thanks, Sean. That probably would have helped had I waited for your reply. I didn't - I was impatient to get back to "normal" - and I reverted to a stock Fences layout and moved on. Good to have the info though.
Win 10, Fences 3 I'm still encountering this error. Today, I tried to delete a folder, using Windows File Explorer, to which a portal pointed. Understandably, it refused stating that the folder was open by another process (which it clearly was). When I tried to subsequently delete the portal using the Fences UI, Fences went into the classic failure cycle. Removed Fences, rebooted, purged iaw the instruction here and reinstalled. Sigh, this is getting
After reporting and resolving the problem once already (see below), I encountered the problem again today. Cold booted the PC in the morning, powered off for a couple of hours and then restarted. Problem surfaced immediately on start. MS Windows 10.0.19044. Fences 3 (latest version downloaded from Stardock last Nov). Latest NVIDIA drivers (version 511.65 released 1 Feb 22) were installed yesterday. This is the only significant software change
It is working fine at the moment. Snapshot taken, fences moved, snapshot restored successfully. I suspect my reinstalling Fences after that "...Windows Explorer crash..." error has solved the problem.
Snapshots are created daily successfully. Do you have any recommendations for testing a Fences backup? I suspect that taking an unscheduled one now, making a change, and restoring that backup would suffice. Comments?
Yes.
Fences 3.1.3.3, Win10 10.0.19043 I was asked to create a new topic for this issue which may or may not be related to a failure of Fences to start because Win Explorer was improperly shut down. Purged Fences 3 by following the repair process described in that thread. Reinstalled from new download from Stardock, and got through the license dialog and into Fences. Purge hadn't cleared the Backups folder which contained a Pre-Install Snapshot and the recent daily
This started happening to me yesterday (multiple Explorer restart attempts resulting in the error msg from Fences). SFC reported corrupt files and successfully repaired them (according to SFC, that is). I uninstalled Fences3 from Windows and reinstalled from Stardock. This failed at the license entry dialog with the same symptoms. Purged Fences3, reinstalled from Stardock, and got through the license dialog and into Fences. Purge didn't clear the Backups fo
This has a simple answer... Stardock tells FastSpring their price... then based on that price each country tells FastSpring what to charge in their country based on their excise taxes. Stardock cannot control that price, each country controls their price. Question answered.
Afraid not. For items under $20 there is no excise tax so all that's left is VAT and exchange. Even with a pessimistic exchange rate, I
I am not passing the buck here (no pun intended) but we do not manage that - FastSpring, our processor, does. They handle the exchange rate and any local taxes \ VAT you have for your region in real time (meaning, exchange rates vary).
Pun accepted :-). Fair enough, you've contracted it out. But perhaps Stardock should ask their processor on behalf of their customers so that everyone understands the ra
Could someone at Stardock please explain to me, with the exchange rate at 1.24 CAD/USD today, why the beta is more than 55% more expensive in $CAD ($4.71) than $US? It's not as if you're shipping anything across the border for which you have to pay. Even if I include GST and PST, and set the exchange rate to 1.30, it's still inflated. And that's not including the exchange rate penalty I'll have to take on the credit card transaction. It's not the actual amount that d
Thanks but that doesn't really answer the question. Will I have to pay again for the final release? Will my participating in the beta (and potentially helping identify and solve bugs during 'testing') have any affect on the release price?
