I['m hoping some of you WinSkin wizards can answer this one for me... A lot of people are having trouble with iTunes for Windows eating resources, especially when re-sizing the window or dragging it around. Now, I can;t seem to get one teeny little element of iTunes to change appearance no matter what I try, so I'm assuming it is not using the native elements in Wndows that allow us to skin. Apple probably wanted to control the precise and exact appearance of the app. SO what
I agree with DiscoPopStar...the review did fall a little short, in that they didn't realize that a system can be skinned to look much more professional than Windows default. They also didn't take the other Stardock software into account, which would have allowed them to add walls and icons and so forth to a one-click solution. However, they seemed to have loved the product anyway...I'm sure after a visit to this site they would have learned how all the products work together...

I use BootXP, and it works great. However, I have NEVER used anyone else's NTOSKernel file. Not on a dare would I. All you need to do is save a bitmap and drag it into the program...it can convert to 256 on the fly. If people REALLY want bootscreens at the site on top of Logons, which I do, BTW...well, I think Stardock can either write an app that duplicates the functionality of BootXP, or offer a link to the software. I run an Athlon XP 2800+, a gig of Geil Golden Dragon RAM and an nVidia FX 5900. Loading *all* the Stardock customization apps not only slows down my computer, but makes it unstable. I don't think that *anyone* can claim that any PC app does or doesn't do something on all machines. Every setup is so radically different, driver versions, loaded software, brands of hardware, heat, airflow, uptime...all of these things make such a huge difference. Personally, I would stay away from distributing the MS files if possible. That can only bring Stardock heartache unless you have a deal with MS. I say if they want bootscreens and they don't want to use LogonStudio, they should probably look for another website, or Wincustomize can offer what nocool suggested, compatible images and links to the tools that will modify the person's personal system files without Wincustomize distributing the copyrighted code.
I think this is a perfect balance between what everyone wanted to see happen. Hopefully this will cut WAY back on the complaints about walls being moderated. Not that I minded. In fact, given my druthers, I would mod the living crap out of the wallpapers. Then again, I once tried to annex New Jersey as part of my back yard, so I might be a bit heavy-handed.

Do these people realize they're using alpha and beta software? I would put a notice all over everything were I stardock, that says "HEY, IF YOU'RE NOT ADVANCED ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THAT BETAS MIGHT EXPIRE, AND ALPHAS AND BETAS MAY HAVE BUGS, PLEASE GO AWAY."
The bottom line, IMHO, is there is just no good substitute for FAST servers balancing a heavy SQL load. Frogboy, have you guys seen these: http://www.cenatek.com/ - Solid state ramdisks designed for what you need, I think. They can be self-powered to retain data, etc. With some redundancy you could guarantee no data loss, and have the frontline servers running about as fast as is possible, considering the whole damn thing is in RAM. Well, I have downloaded installed and started it, and I am overwhelmed. There is SO much to learn and do, it's actually a little daunting...I think I have to wait until I have had my fill of Splinter Cell and 1942 before I dive in. Stardock has created a VERY rich game here, layers upon layers of play to be discovered. You just have to have some time to invest...this one is going to be like crack. I am creating batch files to shut down and restart some apps before I start a game (and after I'm done). I am running into trouble with Cursor XP and one game, so I wanted to add it to my batch file... Problem is when you end the process you lose your cursor altogether. One thing I suggest with XP is PATIENCE. I was having an issue like that and at one point decided just to walk away in disgust. 20 minutes later the machine shut down, rebooted itself and ran fine ever since. Getting back to SD Central... One thing that makes me CRAZY is the new default installation directory crap. WHy is SD deciding where my software is installed? I want the option to install ALL stardock/ODNT apps by default in ONE location. As it stands now, by not manually installying each one, I have THREE locations, and it aggravates me. As for the bugginess, hey, we're on the bleeding edge here, running up-to-the-minute alphas and betas. Things are gonna go wrong.
