Many thanks Sean - one more question if I may... I've noticed that Multiplicity supports only Win10 and Win11 so if it's used with multiple PC's, do they all need to run one of those two OS's? Or does Muliplicity only get installed on one PC and it then connects to the others via WIFI / LAN or whatever? In which case, the other PC's could be running a different OS?

Many thanks basj - one more thing... I came across this thread which suggests that Multiplicity monitor support is flawed if you're using a 4K monitor but you've 2 PC's working at different resolutions (something to do with the mouse cursor never being where you think it is?) That's pretty much my situation here. I've a 4K monitor and 2 PC's but only 1 PC is capable of 4K r

I'm guessing that Multiplicity requires the keyboard and mouse to be wireless, yes? I've a wireless keyboard available here but I use a Microsoft Trackerball here (wired) rather than a mouse (I've always had a preference for trackerballs...) So does that mean my setup here wouldn't work with Multiplicity? [Edit...] Also, if the monitor expects a wired input, how will two (or more) cumputers work with Multiplicity?

Many thanks Basj. Following the guide worked fine for Windows 10 but not for 8.1 Is there anything similar I can do for Win8.1 ?

I can't find a specific forum for WindowBlinds so sorry if this is the wrong place to post... :-( I'm using WindowBlinds on both Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 and on both systems I've noticed that it doesn't seem to apply styles properly to the Microsoft Edge web browser. They're two different machines with the Win8.1 machine running quite an old version of Windowsblinds (version 8 from maybe 4 years ago) and the Win10 machine uses WindowBlinds 10 from only a week ago. In both ca

Thanks again Basj. I just renewed Object Desktop for another year but strangely enough I got sent 2 x receipts. Is there a way I can check I haven't been charged twice? Also... do I need to remove my existing version before installing the new one - or will the Object Desktop Manager take care of all that for me?

Thanks for the prompt reply Basj - I followed your link but it looks like the latest edition of Object Desktop doesn't include WindowBlinds any more. Am I misunderstanding that?

Can I just ask what's the difference between Curtains and WindowBlinds? On Windows 10 I'm already running an older version of Object Desktop (so I've already got WindowBlinds + Start10 etc - and I mostly use them to give Win10 a "Windows 7" look & feel). So would it be worthwhile upgrading to the newer version with Curtains? What extra stuff would it get me?

Thanks Basj - here's a bit more info.... The version I installed yesterday was the one I originally paid for (back in 2016). So this morning, I tried installing the very latest WindowBlinds (ver 10.8.0). It still installed into C:\Program Files (x86) but this time it didn't crash my system! So it looks like the latest version works okay.

Okay - it's taken quite a few months but I eventually decided to re-install WindowBlinds yesterday. Maybe this is a dumb question but are there different versions for 32-bit and 64-bit? I noticed that my installer placed WindowsBlinds into C:\Program Files (x86) which generally means it's 32-bit (although Win10 on my system is 64-bit). And to my horror, it trashed Win10 making it unbootable!! Fortunately I was able to boot into Safe Mode and fix the problem

Yes, it looks like I've still got my original installers. Of course, how well they'll work with a more modern Win10 remains to be seen - but at least I can give it a try! Many thanks for the prompt reply.

Back in 2016 I bought Object Desktop for Windows 10. I only really wanted WindowBlinds and Start10 but I figured I might as well get the full works. About a year later I was disappointed to be asked to pay a renewal fee - but as it happened, Windows 10 itself was very unreliable back then so I decided to abandon it (as well as Object Desktop). But I'm now taking another look at Windows 10. On a different PC I've been using WindowBlinds and Start8

Windows 10 has been around for quite a long time now but still no version of WindowBlinds to support it. Should we start assuming that Win10 support probably won't happen? BTW...
For the record, Windows 10 will always be Windows 10. There will be no Windows 11, 12, etc.
What do you mean, there'll be no Windows 11 or Windows 12? Do you know someth

Hi 2of3 and many thanks for your suggestions. As it happens, I found a fix in this thread:- https://forums.stardock.com/453201/page/1/#3456211

Joshua - I'd be interested to know if by any chance you installed SkinStudio? I'd been using WindowBlinds successfully for about a week (trial version) then someone suggested I should also try SkinStudio. Since I tried SkinStudio I've been having exactly the same problem as you (even after uninstalling SkinStudio). One or two skins seem to look quite normal - but the majority of them are now affected exactly the same as yours. I'm just about to try gmc2&

Many thanks doortech1. I've uninstalled SkinStudio already (though not WindowBlinds as yet). However I installed SkinStudio from here, so it looks like it was v2.5 shareware:- https://www.stardock.com/products/skinstudio/contents.htm BTW - apologies if I seem inattentive. Even though I keep ticking the box to "Email me when someone replies" I don't seem to be getting any emails :-(

No, SkinStudio doesn't come with WB8 but I managed to download it from the SkinStudio web site. How I wish I hadn't !! I found various settings for adjusting text position - but each one I tried seemed to make no difference to my actual skin (WindowBlinds Diamond). At the end, when I exited SkinStudio, it asked if I wanted to save my changes (to which I replied "No"). Unfort

I installed WindowBlinds8 a few days ago (on Windows 8.1) and I'm pretty happy with it. Only two questions, so far.... 1) Can I customize the colours for individual parts of my chosen skin (e.g. if I wanted progress bars to be a different colour - or the colour of a Window's Title Text)? I've found a page for altering the "system" colours but my adjustments seem to have no effect. 2) Can I adjust the position of a Window'

Sorry to post in the wrong forum - I just wanted to find out if there's a forum anywhere for questions about StarDock's DirectSkin? I can find forums for all their other products but not DirectSkin, for some reason. Can anyone give me a link to a DirectSkin forum please?

Well, my first enquiry was about Object Desktop. I had a technical enquiry and a licensing enquiry. Kim, form Stardock, answered the licensing enquiry while Mike (also from Stardock) recommended that I should consider DirectSkin which he reckoned would be more suitable than Object Desktop. However, I noticed that DirectSkin is one helluva lot more expensive than Object Desktop - since when, I've been trying to clarify what exactly I'd be getting for the money. I've gathered that SkinStudio is ne

Thanks for the email addy Neil. In the meantime, I've found a similar product called SkinCrafter which I'm going to try out tomorrow. If it's good enough for what I want, I'll email lkuperman and say exactly why I bought somebody else's product instead of DirectSkin..!

Thanks - but I'm at the end of my tether here.... I've already emailed Support (and pre-sales support) at Stardock as well as a special Support team who deal exclusively with DirectSkin but they don't seem to want to reply. To me, it seems such a simple question.... Does DirectSkin contain everything I need to produce skins for my apps - or does it only contain the means to apply and distribute skins? In other words, will I also need to buy extra packages, such as SkinStudio or Object Desktop? I

So if I purchase Object Desktop to start with, I'm not going to be paying for components that I'd have gotten anyway?

11 Replies 11,797 Views

Not quite, Werewolf.... I do need to create a custom look for certain applications that I've written myself. But I need that custom look to appear - even on systems that don't have WindowBlinds installed. That's what DirectSkin does, if my understanding is correct. My main reservation is that DirectSkin is vastly more expensive than either WindowBlinds or Object Desktop and I'm trying to figure out why.... I'm really just wondering what exactly does DirectSkin contain for all that extra money?
