Why do people lock threads and what does it mean?

I am sorry if im causing a problem. Im new to this whole thing and im trying to learn. Please be patient with me..It will pay off in the end. Im a fast learner.

It is just message baord ediquette to only start one thread on one subject not 2 or 3.

They are locked for various reasons. It's a way to 'kill' a thread, without deleteing it. No one can add a comment, and it will fall off the page eventually. The reason yours was locked was to kill it, but leave you a message at the same time. One thread per subject please...

All relevant comments/questions should per posted to one thread. Starting a new thread to continue a conversation is confusing for everyone, plus it pushes other peoples threads down the list unnecessarily.
