well, if you're really needing to know how to dl skins here's the trick..

Use the download link below the preview of the skin you want to dl and select save. If the skin is associated with one of the programs you've installed it won't ask you where to save it it'll just do it's thing. In the case of WB you'll get a message that tells you skin X is installed and ready to use and you can select it from your Display Properties->Appearance tab. If it does ask you to save it there are a couple of steps depending on the program you're using. I'll break them down by program:

WB -> if the file extension is .zip change it to .wba then double click the file, this should install it and you can access it via Display Properties->Appearance
IP -> if the file extension is .zip change it to .ip then double click it. This will open up IconPackager and you can apply the theme or just close it.
CX -> if the file extension is .zip change it to .CurXPTheme then double click it. This will apply the theme.

if this doesn't work you might want to open the zip file first and make sure the proper format isn't inside the zip file. It's kind of hit or miss on whether you'll need to rename the file or just extract the zip file and then double click the theme file to install it.

depending on what you download several different things occur. Normally you will just save the object to a folder or desktop and double click on it and it should install or actually show up. Windowblinds should download automatically and get installed, and if you click on the tray icon that popsup right after you download it it will be applied. for iconpackager themes I have had the best experience with saving them in the iconpackager/themes directory if they are not a zip and if they are a zip unzip them to their own folder (if there isn't already a main on in there) to the iconpackager/themes directory. Thats about it I guess.

I know what you mean, RN. You can try the newsgroups, I've gotten much better responses there. Although, you seem to have received some good help here today.

RN2004, Your thoughtful, clear, concise, and tactfully-worded message is fair, reasonable, and contains some sound advice. I know I have been guilty on occasion of letting some frustration show in my responses. I'll try to take your message to heart.

In defense of many of the regulars here who give a great deal of their time and energy to answer the questions of the novice and less-experienced, I'd like to point out that a great many of those who post here neither do the research nor put forth the effort to try to figure things out on their own as you have done. If they did, there would be a lot fewer posts and a lot less frustration, irritation, and annoyance.

Having read these boards regularly for six months now, I find it is actually pretty rare for a new member of WC to come up with a question that isn't answered in the manuals that come with the software, or hasn't already been addressed in the FAQ, a sticky thread at the top of the boards, or easily found using the search features here, at Stardock, or even Google.

Finally, many of those who bear the brunt of that irritation you mention bring it upon themselves by their own attitudes. All too often, they don't pose questions so much as rant, rave, or make demands. There is yet another faction who treats these boards as their personal one-stop request line, either not realizing the time and effort required to make the skins they request, or not caring.

If they all were as polite, thoughtful, and willing to put forth the effort as you are, this would be a much nicer and friendly place. I personally think you'll find all the help you want and some very good friends here. Welcome!

Very well put Shameless Designs! I just hope RN returns to get the help I *think* he was needing. It can be somewhat frustrating having to deal with different skinners uploading their skins in different ways but it's definitely much better here than at other skinning sites.. I remember back in the day having 3 different compression utilities installed just so I could uncompress the files that I downloded from various other skinning sites..

RN, I'm sure we'd all be more than happy to help you out with anything you may need! Just ask!

Nice post GN, however you can probably understand how annoying it can be to be asked the same question over and over when those question are often answered through a quick reading. Some people don't want to take the time to look through things, they want and answer here and now. And that's the annoying part.

BTW: you probably could have saved yourself a lot of time searching through this messageboard if you would have just clicked on the very first post at the top titled Frequently Asked Questions.

Just right click the download button in the web browser, and save the file to your desktop. Once the file is saved, double click it to install. It should be that easy. If there is a problem, then it is a problem with a specific skin. Mention any problems with a specific skin and post here. Also, if such a problem exists, the artist would probably like to know about it. Welcome aboard.

I just got off a 14 hr shift and got to my puter to read the replies. Thank You f0r3 . Your simple reply really clarified some stuff for me. yes I did read many of the FAQs first, dl the PDF file [all 119 pages ] and read through that just trying to understand the terminology etc. Actually I have never even been on a message board like this [talk about a newbie ! ] But I do spend enormous amounts of time on my puter working on a research and writing project so customizing this little digital screen became important to me. I agree that being asked the same questions over and over again can be annoying. And that being rude, ranting or just being dense is no way to gain friends or get help.Just a thought but perhaps someone could post a little 'how to-step by step' for the most basic operations-sort of a foundation for getting into this.Like you were explaining it to a small child.I have the creativity I just need to know how to get the crayons out of the box. I think you are all very kind and have given me some very precise and useful information and I thank you
