Calling all PC experts - Saving image problem...

Ok...I've searched the net and every where else I can think of, so this is a last resort.

Here's the problem...I go to save a animated .gif image...sometimes it (My PC) allows me to save it as it is...a animated .gif...but then other times it will only allow me to save it as a .bmp...which stops the animation of the image.

Is there a setting somewhere I need to change or set that will give me the choice of image types?

What's the source of the image. Something you made? Off the net? What is your default gif viewer?
The source would be from a website. I have a site where I store images found on the net that I use to build my pages with. And...when I try to store them in a folder to use...let's say in an email...it won't allow me to save it as a .gif, for some unknown reason there are times when it will only allow me to save it as a .bmp.

As far as my default gif viewer... uh...huh?...lol I have no idea what that animal is at the moment...

Ok, forget about the viewer. It's not really relevant since you're talking about downloading off the web.

Just so I'm clear, you find a gif on the net, download it to your computer. It's a gif at that point, right? Then you upload it to your site and when you download it to store in a folder for use in email, sometimes they are saved as bmp's?

Hi ChinaCat,

I'm on msn and use their email...and usually I don't have this problem. From most sites I can save the images to a folder and they are saved as .gifs. But if I upload them to my website and then download them from there they are changed to .bmps and it's drivin me nutz...although at my age its a short drive...lol But drives me nutz anyway.

First thing that comes to mind is the server you upload to is misconfigured as far as mime-types. I've run across this occaisonally with a misconfigured server causing some sound files to download as octet-application rather than midi files.

If the files are ok when you originally download them and you're not doing anything to them prior to upload, it points to the server you store them on.
What do you upload them with? FTP?

Sometimes I use transloader.com (old habit from WebTv days) to ftp an image from one site to my site files. Other times I would "save as" to my file folders, then upload them from there using the upload option on the website. Most of the time they come out as they should be, actually when I upload them they come out fine and as they should be, but when I try and add them to my file folder they are saved as .bmps

Look for a pattern. If they change types every time you use one particular method of uploading, but are ok when uploading any other way, that one method could be the problem. If it's random, it may just be the server. If it is the server and it's not configured correctly, you may not have much luck getting them to fix it.

Don't shoot the messenger!

No, if you belive it's the server, it's easy enough to upload to a different server for a while for a test.
And, for the record, I did get my ISP to realize their server was misconfigured and fix it when a site I built and uploaded to their server wouldn't play music files upon loading. Of course it took quite a while to convince them there really was a problem!

the other problem I've found...which may or may not be related...is that some people have a habit of renaming images they have found without understanding it can change things about the image...I've taken images to places on the web that can manipulate .gif images only to find out they were actually .jpgs that were just renamed.

Actually...I have no clue as to why its doing that...I guess I'll have to keep a record of when it happens and what I did to see if I can see a pattern.

Haven't seen that one, but you never know what you'll find on the web.

I have almost 3000 images and files on my site and I have run across that pretty often. People just think they can change the file type from .gif to .jpg for some reason...

I can show you here...I think It's been awhile

Type in your ftp site in your address bar..
Example: ftp..webgizmos @msn..com (w/o the space after "webgizmos")
Right click anywhere on the right.
(This part is a bit fuzzy.....)
There should be something like a warning window that pops-up and and option to put in your Name and Password.

maybe, hopefully

grrrrrrr
