Black Holes

I started a new game under 1.10_RC with the settings shown in the first screen snapshot below.  Note that the "Black Holes" slider is set to "None".  The second screen snapshot shows that I have discovered a Black Hole in my home sector on turn 35.  Does the word "None" not really mean "None"?

Hey there, thanks for reaching out! I asked Cari, one of our devs, about this and she said:

"There is a minimum of 1 blackhole and 1 nebula because if you don't have those, certain resources are not spawned."

I hope this helps!

She also says that if you really want to change it so that there are none, you can edit MapDefs.xml - but it's untested with less than one, so you'd be doing so at your own risk!

Thank you for the response!

If there truly needs to be a minimum of 1 black hole and 1 nebula then I suggest you change the label for the sliders in the Settings screen to say "1" instead of "None" when you move them all the way to the right.

I had no choice.  I had to find out what would happen, so I quickly made a mod that set the minimum to zero.  The game ran perfectly.  I know how to use the console to do things, so I used it to look at the galaxy.  I used the galaxy size that has several sectors, which produced 11 in this galaxy.

I examined all the sectors carefully and did not find a black hole or nebula anywhere, so the mod worked.  I also didn't find any antimatter or elerium anywhere either, which was expected.

This is just for informational purposes, and I'm not using the mod again.  :D

Without Blackholes you do not get Anti-matter, without nebulas elerium, without these resources you cannot build many ship and planet improvements.

So, with the exception of BHs & Nebs being a pain to navigate around why would you want to get rid of them?

gypsy2299,

First of all, I buy whatever I need from the Galactic Bazaar.

Second, I have been playing this game for a long time and, while they were interesting to me at first, I find Black Holes, Nebulas, and Asteroids to be annoying to navigate around and detract from my enjoyment of exploration, expansion, developing worlds, designing and building ships, and engaging the AI in battle.  Therefore, I was happy to see that the devs gave players the option to exclude them from the game and disappointed to see that their implementation did not do what it said it did.  It is not the end of the world, but it is another example of something the devs need to fix: either get rid of them completely when you say "None" or change the label to say "1" when you move the slider all the way to the right.  I recommend the first option because, if the player wants none, they should be able to play the game with none.

Third, the reason I play the early release versions and post things I find here is that I really love the basic design of the game and want to do what little I can to contribute to making it better. I am not just a crabby old retired programmer complaining just to hear the sound of my own voice, I am trying to give you feedback so that you can improve the game.

I thought the Galactic Bazaar used what was available in the galaxy, so no antimatter or elerium in the galaxy would mean none in the Bazaar.

I started a game with the mod mentioned earlier and played a few turns.  When I used the console to check things and do what was needed to get access to the bazaar, I found both were not available anywhere in the galaxy but were available to buy in the Bazaar.  Your method of getting them should work without any normally available in th galaxy.
