Making computer run smoother,faster?

I just recently got an extra 256mb sdram and things seem a little quicker, but I was just wondering if there is anything else I can do to my computer to make it run smoother and a little faster without doing anything drastic? I mean are there any good programs that can help or is it probably just the way it is? Also when it shutsdown it seems to take a minute or so, I have the wait to kill service time set to 200 but it still takes longer to shutdown than it used to. Let me know, Thanks, Richard

Here is a few things that I know slows down a windows box:

Spyware (use ad aware or spybot search and destroy to get rid of them)

HD is fragmented (use defreag on it)

Check to see that you don't have unnecessary processes loading up. Look at this site to see what processes can be disabled:

Oh this is a must view site :http//www.blkviper.com
This guy walks you thru every system service and tells what you what should be running all the time and what can be disabled safely, alot of really useful stuff there.

I personnaly find Techspot's walk-through a lot easier to follow. But to each his own. Both have the same purpose.

Another site is http://www.overclockersclub.com/windowsxpservices.shtml very useful if you have Windows XP. Also doing what Kona said (defragging a few times in a row, checking for spyware) and another thing is to disable any unneeded programs that startup when Windows starts up... such as a lot of personal messaging programs do (Yahoo, MSN Messenger, ICQ and so on). To do this go to the options and it should have an option to turn on/off load at startup.
