Image of icon disappeared leaving icon background on taskbar

Having transferred my involvement from ClassicShell to Start10 - I find that Start10 is suffering the permanent loss of certain icon images when either the applicable software is open or closed.

I am using Windows 10 (ver1809). The software that is involved being in the generation of faults are:- Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 (ver1809), Start10 (ver1.61) and Skype (ver8.36.0.52).

All these items of software were installed and operating without any issue, until I proceeded to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge and Mozilla FireFox Quantum and moved the Skype icon from one position on the Desktop to another (This movement may be co-incidental with the lost of image icon - but it occurred at the same time as the Favourites' importation from Internet Explorer.

While the icon image has been dissolved the background square of the vacated icon is still 'live' - it would seem all the functionalities of the icon are working as it should - it is just that the icon image is no loner displayed. The only issue that is not working correctly is the affected icon is the statement 'Pinned to the Taskbar' when using the properties of the icon that is sitting on the desktop. Conversely the wording of the menu item displayed inside the Start10 menu states the  'Pin to the taskbar'.

Is anyone able to shed some light on the issue I have reported?

In fairness I must state that the issues I have outlined are similar to those I had experienced with ClassicShell. I have not made any approach to ClassicShell personnel as their product is now not in service.

Having established what may well be a bug I am more than welcome to assist the Forum and Start10 should the forum experts require my participation to resolve this issue.

Hello Basj

Thank you for responding so quickly to my reported issues.

I have created some files which I hope will make things easier for you to identify the problem issues.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with the method of responding to you and how I can actually send attachments to you. I have tried to find the methods at the Forum pages.

Would you please send me the detail  - I hope that you will be able to respond fairly soon with the methods used to provide you with the images attachments.

Thank you Basj and have a good New Year.

Regards

As I mentioned in my email, your right click menu on taskbar button look different on my windows. On yours it look like your "Close Windows" menu is missing. I am not sure if this is on Start10.

You can try these suggestion.

1) Make sure you have fully uninstalled ClassicShell since it might interfere with Start10.

2)Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require

restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Greetings Bsj

I have followed your steps and suggestions - I did have issues when running sfc /scannow. The reported message after the sfc scan stated that all reported issues had been repaired - so that was something positive to come out of that scan (Thanks for the lead).

Unfortunately the issue of disappearing icons still remains unsolved.

I obtained a repair tool created by ClassicShell personnel some time ago - so I used that app to clean out any ClassicShell remnants after having used Program and Apps to remove ClassicShell. There were 15 or so entries deleted by ClassicShell tool.

Unfortunately the issue of disappearing icons still remains unsolved.

I restarted the PC with the golden expectation that the changes made above would bring back the missing icons....

Unfortunately the issue of disappearing icons still remains unsolved.

Not sure whether this next step will be of any assistance in determining the reason for the issues reported. I did create a System Restore point having experienced the issues of missing icons some days before installing both Skype and Microsoft Edge. The intention of the restore point was to use it as a springboard to resolve the missing icons saga. So I can go back to the restore point if that will be of any assistance to you to resolve my problems. I might add that I have used the restore point many times since creating the restore point in the expectation that I could resolve the issues myself... but it wasn't to be.

I await your further suggestions and whatever else that may assist.

Thank you for your help so far.

Regards

Hello,

I wonder if this is actually Start10 problem. Can you just check, Run Start10tweak.exe, should be inside your installed directory, (C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock). Click "Unload Start10 now" button and see if that missing icons return.

1) If its return, than I would suggest to use the Start10 purge and reinstall steps listed here : https://forums.stardock.com/486022/start10-support-faq#reinstalling

Just make sure to download the latest version of Start10 from your account and reboot after the installation.

2) If those icons does not return than it is clearly not Start10 causing the problem. Suggest to reinstall Skype.

Thank you,
