Most of my ratings are between 5-10. I have given a 2 I think twice. One was one a wall that the author said took 5 min. to make and it looked like it, but he asked for comments so a I gave him one with the rating. Can't remember the other one. If I commented, you got rated. I sometimes rate without commenting.

If 5 is average, then 4 isn't bad, it is only one notch below. If a wallpaper is average people tend to give it a 7 or an 8, when in actuality it should be a 5. If people started at 5 and granted or denied points for quality, we wouldn't have such inflated scores, imho. Unless you are grading on the Bell curve, there is no reason there *has* to be 10s floating around... unless they deserve it.


Anyway, I have heard that this board has taken a sarcastic, nasty turn lately, so everyone needs to take a chill pill.

hello all, i'm not here 2 start a war, but, i did give adni a 1 rating on his wall 'seeds' because it looks very bad to me, i did not rate it low to be mean, its what i thought. also i was surprized because most of his work is good. i know i'm goin to hung for saying what i feel here, but life will go on, and another thing i also gave him a rating of 10 on his othe wall rt under seeds. after reading the post here in this thread, i must say i've lost respect for adni crying about gettin a bad rating, he dosnt have to have his work ok'ed before its put up for everyone to see, hum, thats nice. i cant tell you how many walls i have had rejected before they ok'ed one of mine, and now i prob wont get any ok'ed, o well. again i say the rating i gave him was not to be mean or to get even in some way, ppl will prob think that anyway, but thats ok. i jus heard about this thread a little bit ago, thats why i'm posting this now. you dont have to go looking for some evil person thats giving ppl bad ratings, i agree with what someone else said, make the ratings so they are connected to the comment, i hope everything works out and ppl dont have to be all upset over their ratings.

If you think Stardock somehow owe you something for the publicity your skins generate adni, then you're skinning for all the wrong reasons. You should be creating desktop enhancements for your own pleasure, and anything beyond that should just be a bonus. When you start creating skins and wallpapers just to get high ratings, then you need to ask yourself wether it's an ego thing.

The fact is, you're the most downloaded skinner at this site and that alone should be enough to convince you that you're doing something right. I personally am not the biggest fan of your style, but when you do create something I like I'm the first to say so. Does the fact that your works get a few high ratings mean that everyone has to agree? No, of course not. But as long as you're pleased with the results, and the creation process gives you some pleasure then that's all that should really matter.

As others have pointed out already, it should be remembered that 4 is by no means a terrible rating. In an ideal world, there would never be ratings of 10 for submissions, because nothing can ever be absolutely perfect. You should be happy with any scores over 5, and only slightly concerned with a 4. In my mind, a really good submission should have a rating of 7 or 8, and only rarely a 9. If an author continually gets rated with only 10s, then are those ratings truly a good representation of their work, or just a sign of the popularity of that author?

Hey Denny03, I guess you don't know English well, but I wasn't cry at all for my ratings, you better try to read again what I have wrote.

Looking and your post here and to your overall rates, It seems to be reasonable to me, since you allready gave good rates to the same author stuff and this rate in question looks to us that you just didn't like this particular file, wich is your right to do.

Ok, I got the courage up finally, to say something.

I think this whole rating thread today, has really boggled my mind.
I realize that my statement here is probably going to bite me in the...butt. But it's a risk I guess I'm willing to take. If none of my work get's approved after this, I guess it's something I am willing to live with. I'd rather never get another piece of my art get approved again, than not have the courage to say what I think.
So if my work will have to no longer be at WC for this comment,then so mote it be.

Adni,I'm sorry I have always had great respect for your work, but in all truth, as of today... utterly disspointed. Part of being a success at something is also being humble, at least I thought. Today you appeared as the furtherst thing from humble, and quite honestly, rather arrogant. There are artists here that struggle daily just to get their works APPROVED!!! All too often to only fail, yet they try and try again, to improve and get approved. While one of "WC's Greats" has a tantrum because his 10 was sabotaged? What a joke! You say you talk to the fellow artists here. Can I ask, do you know what they may be thinking today? I better shut up at this point... getting a lil too fired up, and I know when to be quiet.

If I suddenly I have a great deal of trouble getting my stuff approved, it's something I'll be ok with, at least I know I had the guts to say what I felt!

Lady Akasha, you're not going to get punished for saying what you think and being honest. However, I am starting to wonder if maybe adni's English is a large part of the problem here. I know in the past his comments have been misunderstood as a result of bad wording, and I've had pretty heated arguments with him as a result.

Let's just take his word for it that this was simply a misunderstanding and leave it at that. I'm sure the ratings debate will continue apace anyway...

adni, i wrote what i did because ppl where wondering who gave you such a bad rating. i wanted to let you know it was me. like i said before, i rated low because i was shocked to see something like that from you, your other work is so much better. i'm not going to say anything else about this matter, i'm not hear to have bad words going back and forth.

In the same vein as grayhaze, I understood adni's original post to be more concerned with malicious ratings as opposed to simply low ratings. While he is probably used to getting 10's I don't think his lament was due to a ruined 10. We've had the occassional bad apple here who seems to get his jollies by sabotaging people's ratings. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case here but it does go on and has been cause for concern.

Lady: Historically, as I understand it, Adni's concern (which some other artist's share) is that work be available to view for visitors and others, not just those users with higher user rankings. Presently if you are a visitor or have a low user ranking my understanding is that you cannot view all the work that is on site, only those works rated 7 or above, if I recall correctly.

So whenever I've seen Adni's concerns about ratings in the past, that really has been the issue. Here it evidently is his (and perhaps others') suspicions that downgrading is being deliberately done (which doesn't seem to be the case from the Admin's reviews) with the result being that the casual visitor or low ranking user will not be able to see the work.

I too suspect that his use of language may be coming off differently than intended. But that's because English is his second language. His first language is, you'll forgive the pun, all Greek to me.

I feel very sorry Hippy, for not being so clever as you are!

Boxxi thats the main reason i mainly don't rate, as i make Walls i know what goes into them, if i don't like it i will say but i wont rate low for that reason.

generaly speaking I either rate walls that I like a lot, or can tell there was little effort put into it. Just because something isn't my style doesn't mean I rate it low, I don't rate it at all because I will unfairly judge it.

I have never attempted to create a skin and therefore don't rate them, as I am not a good judge for what took high effort compared to low.

and yes, perhapse adni isn't coming accross exactly how he intended... God knows how rediculous I'd sound trying to say this in spanish(my second lang)!

For anyone that cares...here's my two cents on the rating system.

First off, as a very stubborn person and being known as "The Critic" to all my friends, I've come to judge and criticize almost everything. My friend just bought himself a $9,000 sound-system for his car, I told him it sounded like crap, you gotta adjust the tweeters, the pre-amp levels are off, you need to fine tune that EQ, set the color on your screens, and get rid of that stupid X-Box! How this relates is although I'm a critic, I'm very fair. I don't rate a lot of skins, but so far, the only thing I have given a 10 is mormegil's FauxS-Toon WB theme, everything else got a 9 or under. The way I see it, people shouldn't care about a rating, this isn't the olympics and not everyone is gonna judge you like the french. You guys are not out to get gold medals and worldwide publicity, you are here to express your views on desktop customization (which I'm grateful for). To even get a little bit upset in the slightest way is unnecessary. There is one thing my mother always said to me, that was "never give a sh*t about what people think of you!", I think any and all artists should feel the same way! Why would a bad rating get you upset? You spent the hours making it, and that alone should satisfy you! If it doesn't, you need to take a look at why you are doing it in the first place. So to all publishers of art, graphics and whatnot...do it only because you want too, don't do it for praise or fame. Every memorable artist, whether it be a painter or a skinner, did it because it's what they liked to do...not because they wanted to be famous!
