adni, I'm pretty new here but I check in almost every day at least once to see what's new. When I saw "Seed" I said to myself, "I bet that's an adni18 wall", and sho' 'nuff, it is. (I always look at the enlarged wall before reading about the author or the description) Anyway, I haven't seen a single thing of yours that I don't like for some reason, and most I like because all the elements that are appealing to me are present. I'm not much of an artist, but I spent several years on the road as a working pro musician and I write a lot of my own material. I never liked it when people criticized my stuff either, but different strokes man! They usually liked it better the second set after I bought 'em a beer or something! Anyway, I feel bad that you seem to feel so bad when almost everyone here is giving you encouragement. Hang in there. You do great work!

Denny03...clearly since you have the intestinal fortitude to publicly announce you are the author of the '1' it is clearly not a nasty, vindictive rating [safe in anonymity]. I applaud your candour...

Lady Akasha...take it from me your subsequent submissions will NOT be affected by your opinion/s expressed here, or anywhere else. A goodly proportion of your submissions succeed, and I'm sure that'll simply increase with time....

A work not requiring 'moderation/approval' such as is the case for Adni18, and others at a similar 'access level' receive an auto '6' when uploaded. They are therefore invisible to the casual visitor and require subsequent 'adjustment' by legitimate public rating.
Some of these works actually receive several comments and are public for a considerable time yet still languish with the 'auto-6'....I think I still have some like that after months.
Now, were ALL works to be moderated, no matter who they were by, there are quite a few currently online that perhaps would have made it no further than the cutting-room floor.
Even the 'best' authors create crap at times. I am certainly not the 'best', so I self-moderate to not abuse my position/access status....and then think I've achieved something when I reach 100,000 downloads...

People the likes of Dark Mist deserve the real praise...not the 'Masters' or 'Journeymen', whatever. He's submitted more walls than most but has had precious few of them approved. Not a whimper about it....no complaints about vexatious admins or ratings....just plods on and 'has another go'....

Whether a wall here is done by Nikos, Bryan or even Helder it is not a foregone conclusion that they are all par-excellence. Sure, I personally have rated many of their works a '10', but there are others I would actually have moderated...why?...because the '10's I give become the standard by which their other works are to be judged.

Vanity is a powerful influence on our lives. It is often hard to accept that perhaps not everything we do will be well received. C'est la Vie...[probably stuffed that up...my French courses were over, 33 years ago]...

Them are words of wisdom Hus, and I dont just say that becuse you said that about the Toon skin. I only rate what I beleave, and I dont do it ofton. I dont mind if you dont like my work. I do it for me. If people like my stuff then thats OK with me. If thay dont, thay dont. People should not rate things low to be spitefull, but if I get a 1 on the toon suite, then that is the right of the person who gave it to me to give. All I would hope is that it is their honest judgement.

Thank you jafo...In the end i don't complain cause im not doing this to be noticed as great or to be popular or whatever, i do this cause i enjoy it, i find it fun being 'creative' in a way that i can, I'll upload what i find is good to me, if it gets accepted then great i get to share it with you..(yes some i have uploaded isn't great but don't forget im just a learner)...we have people saying the rates are unfair blah blah but remember your work is what i and others are learning from so is that itself not something to smile about?? We don't all have the same taste in things so yes some are going to say its bad when others argue its great but that happens in everything, if your happy with your work and are good enough to have it accepted then enjoy that, enjoy knowing that the download counts more than a silly rating, I'll stop my banter now and just have fun in what your doing...to take it too serious you'll just self destruct. I do think with wallpapers it's a different sitch because wall authors don't even get out of the 'gate' on initial submission to the 'general public' without at least a 7 rating...I think?

Mormegil, I love your new skin but I haven't rated it as yet because it won't resize the windows horizontally but I didn't want to mention it on your actual skin and perhaps make people think twice about it since it's an EXCELLENT skin and the graphics are just so beautiful and pure. Interestingly enough, I found this very same situation when trying to do a skin with side-bar transparencies and suddenly I couldn't horizontally resize. I don't know if this is something 'new' because I now use WB4 and haven't tested it on 3.etc.

I dl a lot. I have 2 750mb disks full of just walls. I dl what I like and don't what doesn't catch my eye. I'm do not draw or paint anymore. I haven't taken classes or studied art but I do know what art is. I gave up my asperations of being a artist some 30+ yrs ago when I wasn't allowed to attend art school. The work I see here is some of the best computer generated art I have ever seen. The artist here are some of the best. Don't rely on someones rating of your art to distract you from continuing. I have my opinions, you have yours, what counts is that you stay inspired to create what you feel, for that I am greatful. Continue to create your dreams for others to see. adni18, art is in the beholder, as they say "beauty is only skin deep" stay for it would be a shame and crime for you to leave and deny us your dreams and feelings.

What I don't understand is this......

In this case (For Seed), it was a "10". You then received the following: 4, 7, 7, 10, 8, 10 Which then averages to the current "8".

hello all, i'm not here 2 start a war, but, i did give adni a 1 rating on his wall 'seeds' because it looks very bad to me, i did not rate it low to be mean, its what i thought.

What happened to denny's rating?

I hope no one is suggesting that we make a decision on a rating on whether or not guests can see a certain submission after we rate. Personally I could care less whether someone who has not taken the time to even register an account here can see or download anything. Now citizens is another matter entirely...

Hmm. This is something I truly don't understand. If someone is higher ranked (Master, J-men) their auto-vote is a '6' which is very fair as far as being in the 'skins' category whereas almost everything is auto-accepted in skins anyhow as long as it's functional, only exception is walls tho? Why can't '5' being the 'mid-range' be the general public number for walls? The 'general' audience can then have access and the rest of the people can vote it as they wish but at least it has a chance to be shown? Or is this about bandwidth?

This doesn't GEL 'logically' with me. Even low rated skins on initial launch are still shown to the general public, right? I've had cursors low-rated still show up to the 'general public' but walls are treated so...hmm...different. So, why make '7' the general public number? I don't get it? It doesn't compute!

Lowest rating I get are from the admins... I always start with about a 4, then citizens bump it up to around an 8.

I consider my ratings from the admins to be very fair even though sometimes I've had my doubts . Usually I'm a 4-5-6 and lucky if I get a 7-8 from the admins and it goes from there. But 'skins' are still 'out' there so people will vote you eventually what 'they' think you deserve.

Walls on the other hand are a different story.

And I don't think ANY admin would HONESTLY allow a wall they thought was rated beneath a '2' to even get in the door. But with Masters etc. they are 'auto-IN' and so THAT is a dif story. Sometimes being 'guided' by 'rejections' is a good thing...it keeps you on your toes.

The '1' came later, and therefore hardly figures in the motivation of the thread...
Shmoopy...the '6' is anticipated to be a likely 'standard' [minimum] for an experienced skinner or wall-artist to achieve. [you'd imagine that generally their stuff would at least be above 'average'].
At that point the wall is not visible to the casual visitor until a 'real' rating is applied that may kick it over '6'.
When a wall by others goes through the moderation process...it has the potential to end up immediately at '10' or '1', except a wall an admin/wizop is likely to want to rate a '1' simply does not make it through.
It is deemed equitable that the potential 'Master wall artist' has a 'average-ish' '6' imposed, whereas the first-timer through moderation could quite conceivably start with a '10'.
The only 'perk' of the position is that walls, etc go through immediately...the ratings are definitely not 'synthetically inflated'....

Now here's where it pays to be 'accurate' with comments which may paint an admin in an unfavourable light.
The "Lowest rating I get are from the admins... I always start with about a 4"..comment is, to say the least 'slightly wrong'....I checked.

Now, when the 'touchy' topic of ratings is ever raised it pays to not skew reality. Those figures all look quite reasonable to me...[I think they were filtered newest to oldest]..

I like being judged by the admins...they've seen everything there is to see here...and I generally take to heart their initial rating no matter what I'm rated later. This is not because I think they are "GOD" but because they see a LOT of work and judge it accordingly. So, I always make note of my first rate and keep it in my mind. When an admin gives me a starting 7 I feel quite honored.

My heroes here remain the same...Adni18 feels a bit hurt but nobody should accuse him of being a cry-baby when he's always been kind and forthcoming to many new skinners here including me.

Now I'm gon' ski-daddle before I get accused of thread-hijacking...

Seriously though, After getting my upload notice I've looked at my skins and they have had low rating right off the bat, I assumed that it was from the admins. The ones that I remembered where considerably low, because I remember feeling hurt that my skins were ranks that low. A couple of 4's stick in my memory. Maybe after I updated the skins people replaced thier low ranking with hire ones...

I wasn't trying to be inaccurate, I really do remember these.

^^Gabriel...I can only assume that ratings were updated or you have removed the works with the low ratings....the admin rates are originals, not updates as fare as I can tell by the dates...

Well thought i'd add my thoughts on this subject as someone who can't rate...

I have seen some work on here and wondered how come it's rated so high and would have liked to put my thoughts on it but can't. Ppl seem to have too many 9's and 10's and have lost what those numbers actually mean. Alot of work is about the same for quality etc and so a 9 and a 10 should be work that is exceptional and really stands out.

I'll leave you with this thought. Go back to your maths lessons at high school and remember there are three ways of working out an average. Perhaps this place is just using the wrong one. just an idea.

If I submitted my work here i'd concentrate on how many downloads i'd get and feel happy knowing how many ppl liked my work enough to take the time to do that. That after all has to be better than any ratings..... doesn't it
