Disable Auto Update

How do I turn off fences auto-update?

It would be nice if there was a checkbox added to enable/disable checking for updates at Windows Startup.

Maybe stardock can tell us which URL it checks for updates at so I can block it on my router?

Thanks!

I'm sure so many people would appreciate this option. (Especially with the problematic update popups going on right now.). It seems so simple. Quite surprised I couldn't find it in the settings.

I second that. It is very annoying to get this update window every day. I will definately NOT update, especially not if one has to pay again for the new version 3 and it is not clear from the beginning. Wrong turn, friends. Stop it now, or I will throw this shit from my desktop and you will definitely never ever earn another dollar from me again. thx.

I got it too, they know about it and I know they'll fix it. No need to get violent.

Count me in. Alternatively knowing the update url could be nice to be able to block it on my firewall.

Hi,

I can tell you that the update check contacts activate.api.stardock.net. However I've also noticed that it periodically connects to dl.dropbox.com but I'm not sure why.

There is a text file temporarily on dropbox that allows Stardock to enable bug tracking (as long as the user also enables via a reg key).

Thanks!

I added "127.0.0.1 activate.api.stardock.net" to my hots file.

oyomr9,

I'd presume that blocking activate.api.stardock.net will prevent activation of the product key since it likely connects to this address to validate the key. If you want to stop automatic updates using this method, you probably need to allow activate.api.stardock.net for activation and block it afterwards. The software will still attempt to auto-update but won't find any new versions.

Good luck!

i would very much appreciate an option whether to check for automatic updates or not, as it will often interrupt me while playing an online game. i have since blocked the outbound rule from fences.exe through the windows firewall until such an option is implemented.

thanks for listening to your customers.

Update:

Sadly, blocking firewall outbound rules related to an application are usually easier done with other programs than the trouble I've had blocking Fences for some reason.

At exactly 3:45am MST every day (yes, I work/play evenings and sleep in the day), the Stardock Fences notification pops up letting me know that there is an update (which I am not interested in updating to the latest version). I have closed it, and also selected "remind me later" which doesn't seem to differentiate between the two choices... it still nags me every day. Interestingly, when I do have the latest version, Fences still manages to disrupt my online connectivity whether I'm working in Photoshop/Illustrator or playing games on Steam (note: approx. 50% of the time Steam seems to crash when the Fences intrusion occurs - as I am notified of the offending process before the crash, or when I check the event logs.

I have blocked:

  • fences.exe
  • SdDisplay.exe

but, Fences still manages to squeak through to inform me of something I don't want to do anything about.

10101000 mentioned doing something about the activate.api.stardock.net, which I would be very interested in learning how to configure.

Apparently you have an option for the entire Object Dock suite to not check for updates... can you not add an option for Fences?!

Any help with how to permanently block or stop this daily connection would be much appreciated! Thank you. :)

Contact the support team.

There is a registry key that can be set to disable update checks if you are using 3.05

Just logged into say that I uninstalled Fences over this issue.    Mandatory auto-update checking and notification popups are a deal breaker for me.  Would've been simple enough to add an option to disable it, but I guess Stardock wasn't interested in doing that.  Bye!

Can this AutoUpdate registry key be created under HKCU\Software\Stardock\Fences\Settings if I only want to disable it for this utility and not all products?

When the AutoUpdate dialog pops-up, it would be helpful to indicate which version is currently installed, the proposed version available, and a link to the release notes!  (Same for Multiplicity, please)

Also, an option in the product UI to enable/disable updates would be good / preferred.

Recent update to Fences 3.0.7.6 was very unstable and crashed anytime a new icon was added to the Desktop, resulting in "Bug Splat" window.  Rolled back to 3.05.12, and don't know if the prompt to update is for problematic 3.0.7.6 or some other version??

Hello tommc39029,

Have you try the 3.08.1 version yet?

My question is related - the auto update has popped up three times in the last week. Twice I allowed it to update, rebooted and carried on. Today when the popup appeared, I said remind me later.  Then I did a "check for updates" from the Help About link.  It said I was up to date (3.0.8.1).   What's the story here?

Support is aware looking into it

For now see if un checking  the update

Box for 3.08.1 .. works for you

Running 3.08.1 and I dont see any box to uncheck to stop auto update.

where is it?

Oh, thats right, it doesn't exist in-app.

One has to run the registry key addition batch file, because???

Why doesn't the program have an in-interface checkbox to update its own registry keys!

Is stardock deliberately trying to trick people into updating to a version their subscription does not entitle them to? So they are more inclined to just purchase another years worth of updates?

Considering the 8 months of poor performance/so frustrating it makes using it LESS PRODUCTIVE!

Stardock should be extending everyones subscription to 2 years!

I did have a update box - checked - for Fences

but when I unchecked it the update went away

Win 10 and 3.08.1

Try this

 Purge Fences https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

then Re-Install

Going to your Stardock account and download Fences from there

click on Object Deskstop Manager - View Individual Downloads

Thanks for reporting this

Hello,

From what I understand, he did not said stop auto update, what he meant was do not update when the auto update pop up comes on. And Support is looking into the problem of pop up keep coming up even you already on its latest release which is 3.08.1
