The Perfect Computer

If you could have the perfect computer what would it be like?

One that has the parts available ie not one like the starship enterprise's.

What would someone put on a 240 gig hard drive. To me that seems like a lot of space.

I am currently drooling over Polywell's Workstation, POLY 880NF2-2700XGL (AMD) or the POLY 7205G1-3000XGL (INTEL) and Samsung's SnncMaster 191T 19" TFT monitor.

Drool is cheap

Nah. Enterprise NCC-1701-E has a better computer than voyager. By a long way....

But for me: Dual P4 3.06 HT, 4GB RAM, 4 300GB HDDs, 2 DVD writers, floppy drive (yes, I still want one), nice case, Dual boot WinXP (will be upgraded to 'Longhorn' when it arrives), and Linux on HDD 1 & 2. I don't think I missed anything there....

Oh! I did miss something!! Quite a lot in fact! Doh!

Graphics: GeForce MX
Sound: Creative Audigy 2 with the breakout box thingy
New keyboard (dunno what really)
The mouse I have got! I love it! Microsoft Optical mouse Black Special Edition (http://www.microsoft.com/uk/mouse/wombla_info.asp)

240GB is a lot?

I have 505 usable GB, and I'm *this close* to being out of space on all but my OS drive. I'm DYING for some money so I can pick up a pair of Serial ATA drives and finally use these neat connectors on my motherboard...

Here's another vote for a dual Athlon MP machine - I currently have two, one based on the MSI K7D Master-L and one on the original Tyan Tiger MP.

The Tyan with Athlon 1700 MP's and the MSI with Athlon 1900 MP's.
Each has:
1 GB of DDR SDRAM
two Seagate Barracuda IV 80 GB drives
a Plextor CDRW and a DVD drive (no DVD burner yet)
Gainward Geforce 2 Pro graphics
Viewsonic MB110 21 inch monitor
Logitech Freedom Pro (cordless Mousman Wheel and cordless split keyboard)
Same keyboard attached to both via a Miniview III 4 port KVMP switch (the P is for USB peripherals)

And for you storage freaks I also have an Adaptec 2940U Pro attached to an external IDE RAID box with just over 500 GB in RAID 3 configuration. At work I just got one with 8 drive bays populated with 250 GB drives, 7 of them running in RAID 5 and one hot spare (see at http://www.acnc.com/02_01_jetstor_iii_ide.html), stark23x - very similar thing coming up using the serial ATA drives.

Only thing I would add at this point is a Samsung Syncmaster 241MP 24 Inch TFT LCD Monitor - of course it costs more than both my machines combined - but what a bueaty. Check a review at http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/samsung241mp/
