Unable to play more than an hour without crashing

Over the past month LH has crashed on me many times. It is getting to the point that I really don't want to play any more unless these crashes get cleaned up.  I have gotten the DX error many times, and discovered the autosave has changed icons for my units. I have gotten an hourglass as the turn ends with nothing at all happening until I click on the game window and get the message that LH is not responding and needs to close. I was able to play 20 minutes today and then it crashed. This latest patch seems to have introduced new problems that render the game nearly unplayable. Help! I want to play but I cannot play it in it's current state.

I too have regular crashes and I'm too getting more and more fed up with it and how broken the game is in general. I think I have never played a game that is technically of such low quality. I just can not remember a game that has crashed on me so often, has such broken features and many, many small annoyances that take so long to get fixed if they get fixed at all. Some of this stuff is in there for months and it seems nobody at Stardock cares. I'm playing this game since 2012 and I have so far never recommended it to any of my friends, because I didn't want to be connected to game that would crash so often on them and annoy them in so many ways. On top of that the DLC also sometimes gives the impression of a quick and dirty job. This is really ridiculous. I think what this game need is a release where all the minor and major bugs get fixed and nothing else, no balancing and no new features. I really love this game but it makes me sad to see it in this state.

I have the same problem with dx crashes and I love this game too. But it`s unplayable with so many crasehes. I think it could be not only game problem but Windows 7 64bit. I had no crashes on Windows XP. I hope someone will find a fix to this problem.

In the meantime, please attempt the following:

Clean your video card to make sure it's free of dust buildup and not overheating.

Update your DirectX installs

Update your video drivers

Update your sound drivers

I've been getting a lot more crashes, too.  Always between turns.  It's the program itself causing the problem.  I've got it happening on multiple machines, exactly the same style of crashing on each one, and I know other people having the same problem.  I think it's caused by the way they're doing multi-core processing, in that they have as much happening at once as possible, and I think certain events conflict with each other and the program doesn't know how to handle it.  That's my best hypothesis, anyway.  FE's always had between-turn crashing, and they keep putting out patch notes that claim it's fixed but it never is.

I'm modding the living S**** out of the game and I had no crashes at all. Ever.

I did notice one bug tough - reloading a game too many times ma cause the sea/lakes to evaporate and the colors to become more intense. Just re-starting the game fixes it.

We went through all the crash reports that steam collects* and fixed the cause of 80% of them in 1.7. We will continue to monitor crashes after 1.7 releases.

* Its actually a pretty cool process, steam gathers all the crash information and then links common crashes together so we can see what crashes are the most frequent.

Another reason why Steam is #1. That's really great it does that for you. Glad you can see that info easily!

confirmed.  same exact pattern I see, using Nvida gtx760 with latest drivers.

very regular, takes about 7 reloads, and the water disappears, then the dynamic lighting goes.

restart fixes.

Even though it is a lot better than it used to be, the game doesn't seem to properly unload the previous map when you reload, until it just runs out of memory.  It can also slow down in long games with lots of cities and units.

Will be interesting to see if 1.7 provides any help here. Should be coming out later this month:

Do you run any other Stardock programs that use their software (DesktopX/ObjectDock)? How about widgets/gadgets or anti-virus software? Curious if there's a potential conflict there. What OS? 32 vs. 64 bit?

no and no.

win7 home premium 64bit.

Well, sounds like 1.7 will be out next week so if you can't solve it before then, give that a shot. Also, if you haven't worked with SD support I'd encourage you to do so. They're really great.
