bug process explorer restarting

Sometimes if i click the start button really fast several times, like double-click or triple-click, it hangs and it seems that the explorer process restarts itself. Then everything becomes normal.

Could you look in the Windows event log and see if there is any information on the crash?

this is happening all the time. Really annoying. The computer freezes for 6 seconds, then process explorer reboots.

We have had people in the office clicking their start button as fast as they can and nobody seems to have encountered this problem yet which makes it a little hard for us to resolve.

Why are you clicking it so rapidly?

Its not always fast... Sometimes if i click only once or twice it happens. It depends...

I had this happen once or twice, I wasn't clicking it fast, I just clicked it once and it hung for 10 seconds or so, and then explorer restarted. I don't think it necessarily has to do with clicking speed.

I have had the same problem, it is a bit difficult to replicate, but it is definitely there and it does happen often.

Same here clicking Start8 fast over and over does cause Windows Explorer to crash!

However even clicking Start8 normaly also causes Windows Explorer to crash at random times!

Please email support@stardock.com so we can get some logs

I've been using Start8 ver.1.00 with Win8 x64 for over a week I havent seen it crash explorer yet (knocking on fake wood), It might be beacause I installed a very important update for windows first before I installed any software or drivers. The update is KB 2756872, It will update your windows to version 6.2.9200.16420

I am pleased to say that after intentionally slowing down parts of Start8 and a lot of clicking the issue has been reproduced and most importantly tracked down and resolved.

It appears it was very timing sensitive which is why most people have not encountered the problem, but by slowing some code down it was easier to reproduce.  Unfortunately I may need a new mouse now...

Great. That was the thing that bother me the most.

Will the fix come soon? Start8 on my computer is unstable, from time to time it happens with a single click...

Neil, you may now be the fastest clicker in town - hopefully no one calls you out to find out. ;-)

I have also had several explorer.exe crashes when selecting the Start8 start menu button.  I don't get it when performing multiple rapid clicks - it occurs randomly and not very often when I select the start8 taskbar button.  Here is info on my latest crash:

Do you have any explorer shell extensions installed?

That crash is in a module we do not use.

V1.02 is now downloadable from the store MyDownloads / SDC.

Note that the check update button will not find it currently.

Thanks for the update! Because I do not immediately see any difference in it (UI and feature offerings) I presume it is more of an under-the-hood bug fix release. Yes?

All is well thus far. However when I did install it over the old version (1.01) this update (1.02) did ask for the computer to be restarted; it is just that I don't recall Start8 asking for a reboot before, although maybe it did and I just don't recall.

Thanks again,

Laurence

Can you right click on start8_64.dll (assuming a 64 bit OS), open properties and check the file signing date and post it here please.
