Nope not at all, but then my cell phone is just that, a cell phone, none of the extra functions that make it a 'communications device'.  Don't need them. :sun:

If it does anything more than make *and receive* phone calls, it's a waste of money.

Thanks Jafo.

I see no point to a mobile/cell phone and will never have one... don't care how many apps/gadgets it has.  95% of the time I have a landline within reach/beside me, so I'm not going to add the expense of another phone.  For the other 5% of the time, I'm got going to be away long anyhow, so those who don't get an answer on the home phone can try again later.

@jpmurph1... That's the phone i'm using. lol. I like it! Although being a touch screen phone i tend to butt dial people. that kind sucks. lol

There are numerous genuine uses for them...

On one occasion I averted a multiple pile-up on our Tullamarine Freeway by alerting the police to boxes strewn over the 4 lanes of freeway....they 'fell of the back of a truck'....

More accurately though, it was down to my experience with Motor Racing and dodging cars coming at you whilst clearing the 'issue' and saving the odd life or three.

Didn't stop one Taxi hitting them and a Semi almost jack-knive at 100 clicks attempting to avoid both the taxi and the boxes.

4 lane freeway and a 'blind' bend....recipe for distruction.

FYI....it's a lot safer dealing with race cars at 300 clicks....;p

A genuine, and emergent use....I wonder how many people really need them or how many times they're used appropriately vs. inappropriately?

I wonder why all vehicles aren't equipped automatically with such emergent communications devices at time of production (apart from 'Northstar', I know of none) that would connect immediately with 911 centers when activated manually or in case of crash, automatically?

Yet another "Hmmmm....".

My most serious reservations about cell phones has to do with this issue precisely....the division of attention between a highly demanding task such as driving and talking on a phone (usually about something trivial...or worse, something requiring thought) is hazardous in the extreme and should not be done.

Just to clarify...the triple-oh was done while I was dodging cars....on foot.

It's illegal in Oz to hold a mobile phone while driving....whether on or off....;)

Glad that it is....the comment wasn't wholly directed at that point although it's quite important.

I was really wondering (out loud) about why, when we know that the first thing to go is the cell phone, we don't mandate a built in emergency communication device with redundancy?

Seems the 'right' thing is never really done. :S

Sorry, Bry..didn't mean to HJ the thread.
