has IC done something regrettably stupid?



this seems to suggest that theres an absolutist fleet cap. is this true? because I swear I will pull all of your teeth if it is, and I'll make sure to take my time.  :( 

ship cap has always been described as "unlimited" or "soft" because it can be exceeded if you have the hardware and the map for it, its one of the key things that went into my decision to purchase the game. now I can understand making researches that affect your ship limit, but if theres a limited number of them and if its the only factor than its a solid ship cap! no better a system than starcraft! I could not POSSIBLY stand that!

You'd have to have a MASSIVE empire in order to make it up to the top of that tree. I suspect if I had 50+ planets it would happen.

so then remind me how we have these epic battles of what are quite obviously upwards of 30 or so ships per side raging "in multiple gravity wells" common?

second, you're saying that a 50+ planet empire will only have 150 frigates to cover all that terrain at a maximum?

can you tell us why you used 150 frigates in your post, when the amount of supply at the highest level is still unknown to us and could easily be over 2k.

I think they are right in telling you to wait, the highest supply could be much higher than 2k and maybe capital ships supply is independent of frigate supply or whatever.

Or, you know, even if it's 2k, we don't know if the per-ship fleet capacity cost has changed. We have no idea what 2k capacity equals as far as ships goes at the moment. I think we can manage to wait 'til Monday :p

I wonder if maybe someone considered another option. When creating a new game (online or singel) the person or persons creating the game have the option of silecting what if anny limmitations there are from a list of guid lines. Such as max cap no qwestions, ship per planet, ec. That way everyone could be happy and no mods would realy be needed.

Cores with the game coming out in a day it's a littel late to make changes. lol

Seriously if the ship amount issue becomes a huge deal after release, it will be VERY easy to change in a future patch.

I find that if there are too many ships per side, the battle becomes not too fun. I prefer the idea of smaller fleets.

Schod, there's just a little point I'd like to make, and it might be outdated, but I'll try anyway...
I understand your frustration (for what it's worth) but I don't think the devs lied, or even mislead. Recall the quote about the only limit to ships being that of the system? Well, the actual statement said that this was a characteristic of the engine, not directly of the game. The engine easily allows such huge numbers, regardless of whether or not the game itself does. I think that's under one of the links at the top of the page...

If you wanted to play other people online with a high number of ships, perhaps you could start a match (or community, indeed) labelled "ship caps modified upwards" or something like that, so that other players with similar ideas could play with you. That way players with low system specs won't be at a disadvantage if 20k frigates storm down on them and their computers freeze. What do you think?
Or maybe, on IC/SD's side, they could create an option, when hosting multi matches, to eliminate or change the ship cap, similar to the option in SupCom or BFME.

Has anyone not realized that people are arguing gameplay elements against what was stated about the design of the ENGINE? Not even going to get into how moot this is.
