Posting Someone ELSE'S work

Posting Someone ELSE'S work

A New Category?

I would love to see a gallery for all of the stuff that is posted as 'someone else's work' and just put it all in there, whatever it is. There, you can split it into categories (walls, boots, etc.).

If the work being posted is originally created by a non-member and is posted by a WC member, I think it needs to be separated from the original work of WC contributor's.

I realize this will 'piss off' some people...that's not my intent. I also realize that this would involve defining 'other people's original work' and 'altered and/or improved on' and/or 'adapted for a specific proggie' and/or of course ports. All should include permissions and that they are included should be posted in the description.

It just doesn't seem right that someone gets ratings, points, etc., for work that someone else did..whom is not even a member of the site. I think if it is going to be posted here, it should have it's own category to distinguish it from everything else...no ratings or points..and not be allowed to consume front page space that can and should go to original works of member's. (Not that I have specifically seen anything 'not-original' on the front page)

IMHO

I don't compare PC specs or penis sizes either

--- not touching that one ---

I think part of this issue is for me.. when i look at the galleries im part of, i look at my rank in that gallery to see who i have to "pass" to get to #9 or hell #1..

But that ranking is based on downloads.. why not make it based on the RANKING of the skins they have posted? and weighted on if its "original artwork, or code" Just because im working on something out of the main stream or that would get 8,000 downloads, why does that mean my ranking in that gallery is lower then the person who is posting 1 widget a day? It should be about QUALITY, and ORIGINALITY, not downloads.

But.. like Zu um.. "put it"... i compare myself to the people i look UP to not to the ones who have the most downloads. i want to be known for the work i do, for helping people, for trying to push DX past the basics, for trying to show others how it can be used.

and while I am here and on a roll...or rant...or drug induced blathering and spittle-fest...

The entire moderation process confounds me. I would love to spend a day with you guys just to watch and learn. Which brings me to...

I think the next BIG contest you guys have...the winner should get a tour of the place on you guys with hotel and travel expenses. lol. (I love to spend other people's money)
Seriously though, for the folks that are REALLY into all of this and would appreciate something like that, I think it would be an awesome prize.

Then I must be looking up to everybody else. lol.

You have a good point in the entire comment there. I don't like to feel like I have to compete with someone...but I admit...I get green with envy when I see some things uploaded by other's and wish I had thought of it or I was that good...and it gives me something to shoot for..or at the least, inspiration that may lead me to something new.

perso like i have said many times, I don't care about Downloads counts.
I make my "work" for the fun that's all.

I think I need to take a step back from this.  Again, I'm not the artist Po or David are.  I'm pretending I'm joe user here a just want skins and I don't want to go all over hell in WC to get good stuff.  Remember, most of the folks that come here are not artists or posters.  They are downloaders and readers.

If there was a way to fulfill your goals without impacting the majority of users here, I'd be all over it.  Allowing derivitive works, ports, and "distribution rights" are all good for WC but have thier own brand of issues.

I'll tell you what; I'm just glad tha we can have these discussions without hurt feelings or flamewars.

Okay. Last question.
So, who does the site consider it's priority? Artists and posters? Downloaders and readers?

I don't think that another gallery would be as huge an impact as that to the users, no matter who they are, as much as it would be to make it and mod it, which is why I realize how futile this is. It's just a thought.

We want to actively encourage people to contribute as much content to the site as possible, even better if it's high-quality content!  Even if it means asking someone else for permission to repost their work here.  Not all authors are necessarily interested in joining every site on the Internet they can find.

If proper permission is obtained, and credit is properly noted, we don't see any issue with allowing the submissions.  On the flip-side, if an original author ever comes to us and says "Take it down" we will do so immediately.

Adding an additional gallery also isn't the solution.  One of the complaints about WC is how cluttered sections are and how hard it is to quickly sort out what you want.  If anything, we need to be consolidating galleries and restructuring them, not adding new ones.

I don't want users to have to go to other sites to get everything they need to skin their PC, the more content we can get here the better (so long as it's done legally).

Could restructuring them involve a 'category' within a 'gallery'? Possibly with the option to 'block' said content the same way you can pick the gallery's you want to see on the front page or choose the ratings of skins you wish to view?

I guess what burns me is that I have a wall I just got through and it's buried under 10 other walls. 2 of them are images from a site that has the exact images for sale as prints and have no permissions (and the author may have at least 2 others from the same site posted) and another 6 skins that are collages of pics that don't say where the images are from or even if they are the author's.

I don't have issues with these uploads, but for cryin out loud, can't someone even check for permission? There are 3 walls sitting in the gallery right now that don't have any permission at all. One of them even says where it was downloaded from! Not sure if one of them really needs permission, but how that one made it to the gallery is a wonder in itself...

EDIT... as I was typing this, someone was removing the referenced wall.

I hope, that now all are happy.

I wasn't talking about your maps Alperium. Now putem back!
I didn't mention the authors name, you shouldn't make assumptions

Dealing some of these issues never make me happy, no matter what the outcome.

The first wall this person submitted last week - the graphics are just pasted on oblong blocks - 2 of the graphics had watermarks. I left a message to this person that you can't use graphics that belong to others and if those watermarks are not their own, they need permission.
This was wall I left message on.
WWW Link
This is a SS of the zip of one of their walls uploaded today - it appears to have a permission text but as you see - that is not permission at all. They basically say they used graphics that aren't their own and I guess they think that covers it.

Why isn't the policy about posting other people's work without permission explained in plain and simple terms on the upload page itself? Surely that would be a good idea...there are links to the Rules and Guidelines pages (in small print at the bottom) but who honestly clicks those links and spends all that time reading those very verbose pages? Keep it short and sweet. "If you did not make this work yourself but used someone else's work, you MUST get expressed permission in order to upload" or something along those lines in noticeable text?

Yes. Thank you for explaining myself to me. lol.

Thanks for making my day!

Thank you for pointing that out Fairyy. I mentioned it to Zubaz and Zoomba in IRC, but I don't think I was clear.
