Posting Someone ELSE'S work

Posting Someone ELSE'S work

A New Category?

I would love to see a gallery for all of the stuff that is posted as 'someone else's work' and just put it all in there, whatever it is. There, you can split it into categories (walls, boots, etc.).

If the work being posted is originally created by a non-member and is posted by a WC member, I think it needs to be separated from the original work of WC contributor's.

I realize this will 'piss off' some people...that's not my intent. I also realize that this would involve defining 'other people's original work' and 'altered and/or improved on' and/or 'adapted for a specific proggie' and/or of course ports. All should include permissions and that they are included should be posted in the description.

It just doesn't seem right that someone gets ratings, points, etc., for work that someone else did..whom is not even a member of the site. I think if it is going to be posted here, it should have it's own category to distinguish it from everything else...no ratings or points..and not be allowed to consume front page space that can and should go to original works of member's. (Not that I have specifically seen anything 'not-original' on the front page)

IMHO

With bootskins, as with other skin formats, they are simply renamed zips and thus can have such things as permission.txts within them, without needing to have both the boot and the text file enclosed within a second zip.

Yes. And I only checked one of them after changing the extension. 4 out of 6 had permission. I PM'd the admin and told him of my error.

Thanks, Quentin. Didn't know you could do that. I always change the extension.

I don't understand how some stuff gets through. Again, you have seven boots that imply they have permission from the original author, all were uploaded by the same person, yet no permission is enclosed anywhere in the download or the boot file when you open it with winzip. Just the images and the ini. Then when you go to the site of the original author, every one of his gallery's says the following.

Notice:
The images on this site are displayed for viewing purposes only.
Downloading or printing for any other purpose is a copyright violation and is prohibited.
If you do so, it is misappropriation of another person's property, the legal term for which is theft.

And I don't undertsand this > 'With boots we generally assume the wall used is 'free to use' and approve them'...concerning 2 DA artist walls used for boots. Isn't DA work protected or copyrighted when you post it just as a wall you post here would be? Does this mean that any of my walls are 'free to use' for boots?

It's quite simple.

Someone uploads a boot...we assume the wall used is OK to use because that is the responsibility of the uploader to determine.

It gets approved for that reason.

We are NOT magicians who can go 'oh wow...this MUST be a Devart wall...we MUST refuse it'...simply because there are more walls out there in this universe than idiots who think they can make them...and it is literally impossible to simply KNOW them all before-hand.

Put MORE simply....unless we know otherwise we can only assume the wall used is free-use, or the actual artwork of the uploader.

Po, yes, YOU are free to use YOUR walls....

What about works where the uploader states or implies that they have permission (eg. wall is courtesy of...) and there is no permission in the download, zip, or in the actual boot file? Don't the mods check those to see if permission is actually there? Or is it ALL 'don't ask, don't tell'? Right now, there are 7 such boots and none with permission.

Po...if it's stated but missing then PM me and I'll deal.

We're not Thought Police...so we can only deal with uploads actually in error, not presume ones simply 'might be' in error....

Not to take away from the new XION gallery or the thread that ran almost a week calling for it and got some 55 responses...I think it's cool.

But what about the popular demand in this thread (that went strong much longer) and a few others like it that asked or called for a separate gallery for fan art and/or non-skinner art and/or ports or other art that often overwhelms the amount of original art in the gallery's?

A lot of people felt strongly about that and we were told about the problems with coding and time for moderators...yet another gallery for something to skin is added, more work for mods, etc..and all in a very short time.

I can step back and say, another gallery for something else that can be skinned is good. A good draw for more people, etc., etc. But what about the people here already who have contributed, bought subscriptions, the software, advanced in the ranks to trusted Journeymen, etc., who ask over and over for a few changes..often the same thing and all that is returned is excuses on what we/they don't know about running this site, how hard the mods work, etc...yet other gallery's are still added that create more work for the mods and site operators anyway.

I'm going to jump back in here very quickly to put the issue to rest once more.

1.  Ports, fan-art, non-skinner art (not even sure what is meant by that one) will never get their own separate gallery.  At best, they would warrant their own category within a gallery.  We're not going to establish two sets of galleries.  The Wallpaper Gallery is where all wallpapers will go, regardless of what they are.

2.  Solutions to lower-effort work (like bootskins) flooding off higher effort work (like WindowBlinds skins) that we have considered are in how the latest and updated lists are displayed and sorted.  THAT takes development time and effort.  This is the problem that WebGizmos has often bemoaned in the ObjectDock gallery, that icons and docks aren't visually separated enough so one floods off the other.  The solution to this problem is not trivial and is going to require a lot of reworking of how we display content on the site.  That's what WC2k8 is going to be about in large part.  That project is coming later since currently, development is being dedicated to several much higher-priority projects.

3.  Adding a new gallery like we did for Xion is actually not a difficult process.  The only reason we don't add galleries willy-nilly is because we want to be sure there's some real demand for it and skins ready to go when we launch.  And unless Xion turns into something akin to the Wallpaper and Bootskin gallery which gets dozens upon dozens of entries a day, the administrative workload of that particular gallery is trivial.
