Problems with german special characters ae/oe/ue

When opening the german xml files, there is a token for our special characters äöü, it is a square. I got the latest word and ultra edit text editors, but none of them is able to recognize the tokens. So when I change the xml file and save, the files become corrupted and within the game, nothing works anymore.

IE I changed the custom race in the raceconfig.xml and saved. Now when I start a new game, I see not even one race in the race selection screen (due to the fact, that any race got this nice square in its description?). So I have had to copy the english xml file into my german folder, but now its all english. Great.

Sorry to say, but it sucks. Im not going to check any line of text and replace the tokes by ae oe ue, Im not here for bugfixing. This should have never passed the quality control. On the other hand, its like one month ago since the game is released if I remember correctly, it should have been fixed already... or is noone playing the german version?

There are german players like me. But noone seems to beta test german versions.

I switched from the localized german version over to the english original because the localization isn't very well. While playing the german version, I was toying around a bit with the xml files and IIRC they are utf-8 encoded, so german special characters should work for you (as they did for me).

I used gedit to work on the files which is utf-8 capable and had no problems, maybe your editor and MS Word are not.

I know they work on the localization at Paradox and maybe I will try the german version again after 1.2 is released, but AFAIK the bugs on Stardocks side are closed (except the 1,000 -> 1.000 numbering scheme on some Windows installations).

Bodyless, there are several persons betatesting the german versions.

dm04, the problem seems to be your editor, for me it works fine. You are talking about bugfixing, what bug do you try to fix?
If you need help you can find me in #galciv on irc.stardock.com.

Great, I just opened the files in the regular winxp editor and it works. It seems I got to talk to IDM about their so called best editor.

Well, thanks to you all and sorry. Any way how to close this thread?

But didn't give you Ultra Edit syntax highlighting for xml-files. Maybe you can set it to utf-8 compliant behavior, have a look at its options.
