Advantageous/Unfair bug

This is occuring after the use of both Beta 2 and 3.
When I start a new game the custom race picks from my previous "non-beta" game are listed as they should be. But since the numbers for race picks have been adjusted with these betas the word "Abilities" on the tab for race picks is RED and my "Points Remaining" are "-2". Yet I can still click "Next" and continue on to start a new game.
Someone else must have seen this also. It should have been fixed in Beta 3.
I still Like this game and admire Stardocks continuing struggle for perfection.

Well, this post appeared on the Stardock site of "Recent Posts" but not at the Galactic Civilizations 2 site where I posted it. Odd.

Bug to allow gods? Citizen Pianodog

Loading races doesn't remove old stats. 12/16/2005 1:24:32 PM

I'm not sure if this bug has been discussed, I'm relatively new here, but I wanted to let you know all the same.

Last night I was tinkering with saving and loading race profiles and discovered (on my laptop at least) that I could create an Uber Race simply by loading other saved races over and over. The game didn't remove the old techs and abilities before it loaded new ones. The effect was cumulative, too. I could load the same race over and over and keep boosting my stats.

To "test" (abuse?) it, I created 6 races, each with different benefits and techs, and saved each one.

Then I loaded the 6 races, 10-20 times each, and ended up with something nasty. My planet size was increased 100%, my weapon strength 350%, my diplomacy was 200% ... and so on.

I figured the game would ignore the absurdly high bonuses once I actually started the game, but it didn't. My initial size 10 planet immediately became a size 20. My ships all had movement 23, my sensors were insane. After colonizing 10 worlds, opposition worlds started yielding to my cultural dominance... then I won with an Influence victory.

It was amusing, but lacked challenge, so I'm not going to bother doing it again ... my initial annoyance was that I couldn't load a race without having the previous race's stats overlapping mine.

The problem seems to have gone away in the latest update v1.1b3.014

Unfortionately that turns out not to be the case. I have this latest update and the problem still exists.

Yep, in Beta 3 since they changed the abilities it's possible (say in a current campaign) to have spent more points than is allowed. I shouldn't be let onto the next screen until the number is no longer red.

I don't think that feature/bug should be eliminated for non-metaverse play (for metaverse, it should definately go away). Here's why:

Currently, you can load up your saved race files in notepad, and edit them to your hearts content, not caring about the ingame limits. This could be seen as cheating, or it could be seen as a way to have lots of fun at the higher difficulty levels. As long as people aren't able to use this to cheat in the metaverse it's completely harmless. Also, if people are concerned about being allowed to "cheat" (when not playing metaverse games), all I can say is that it plainly shows that you're over the limit, so it's still you who decides whether or not to keep those stats.

I'd say that sounds fair.

Metaverse games know when your points are above, and flag it as cheating. One of my game WASN'T cheating, yet under the beta 3 (and the revaluation of customisation points) it was. So my first metaverse victory was wiped.

However, that means that if you cheese it like that (I've seen it too, but find it wipes some but not all of my points while reloading) then the metaverse will just wipe it.
