Steam, Impulse, etc. don't sell or host PC apps on their platforms. Object Desktop is developed by Stardock, and sold by Stardock only. SDC is merely an app which enables you to download, update, and install your Stardock-only apps and games. It's not a store, it's simply a download manager. You don't have to use it, and the individual .exe downloads are available to easily download.

Start8 is more of a hybrid start menu for Windows 8. Right now Windows 8 is still an early beta, so we still have to see what Microsoft is going to do with the final product.

If there is an edition available to upgrade to, then yes there will be an option.

Windows 8 is not release and probably won't be for some time. Unless it's specifically stated the beta won't be supporting a Windows 8 at this time.
