Stardock has been building software for decades and while some platforms have come and gone (like OS/2), Windows has remained a steadfast component of the modern-computing era for billions of users. During the past decade or two, products like StartX and Fences have been helping those users make their devices more personal and more productive. With the release of Start11 and Fe

Several years ago, it was claimed that we were in the post-PC era - but this week, Microsoft announced a new renaissance for the PC. The company says that there are now 1.4 billion active devices running Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Microsoft seems optimistic that this figure will continue to climb. In a blog post following the company’s earnings call, Microsoft highlighted how the moment

It can but the web version of Teams is not as performant as the local install (esp for video/audio) - in my scenario, I keep the primary version of Teams with the local apps and other tenants that I need less frequently with a web version.

We are aware of the issue, the latest Windows Insider release introduced a change to the OS that impacted Start11. We have an internal build that fixes many of the features that broke with this update and are preparing to release it as a beta as soon as tomorrow. As a temporary workaround, if you left-align the Start button and change the icon, this will restore some functionality. Alternatively, we do caution that the Dev channel is fast-moving and we do our best to support users in

This week, we released version 1.1 of Start11 , and with it several new features and updates that make the app the best Start experience for users of Windows 10 and 11. But, bringing a feature like this to life requires a bit more thought and attention than you might expect. On the surface, it seems easy: just add folders. But once you start digging th

Earlier this month, we released Fences 4 – a new version of Fences that introduces several features, including Peek. If you haven’t ever tried Fences, it’s worth exploring, as this unique app is the best way to organize your desktop. In Fences 4, it has also become the fastest way to access your content, too. Fences creates shaded areas on your desktop called fences. These shaded areas can be configured in vari

When building Start11 , one of our core principles was that it isn't good enough to simply replicate what shipped with Windows 11, but rather we must improve upon it. While the idea of rebuilding the Start menu for Windows 11 may sound a bit odd, keep in mind that Start11 runs on Windows 10, too. One of the primary ways that we improved the Start menu experience for Start11 (when compared to the default Start menu) is the ability

Hey All, Thanks for the feedback about WB11 and let me be the first to say that I hear you. As a quick intro, I started at Stardock back in September to lead the software team but have been a long-time user of WB/Groupy/StartX/Fences and even Object Dock many years ago. With the announcement (June) and release of Windows 11 (October), this has created quite a bit of work for us to upgrade many of our core products as fast as we can to support the new OS. Making things

With the release of Windows 11, Microsoft has moved away from full-screen Start menu experiences and effectively made using the OS a bit harder on a touch-first device. Even though Windows 11 does have some touch-first options - like wider touch targets when touch is expected by the OS - it still leaves a lot to be desired. When planning the development milestones for Start11 , one of the objectives we targeted was improving the

As we head towards the end of 2021, in the world of Windows, this is often known as a transition phase. Not that the year is ending but that even though Windows 11 has been released, Windows 10 is still the most popular version of the operating system used today. As consumers and eventually corporations move from Windows 10 to 11, and make no mistake, your company will have to migrate eventually, there becomes a challenge with a common interface across iterations of Windows. Search is one of the most powerful tools of the modern age. Everyone reading this post has used Google or Bing at some point and likely many times just today. When it comes to Windows, search is an integral part of the experience. You might use the search box on your taskbar, click the search bar in the Start menu, or hit the Windows key and start typing your query. With Start11 , we wanted to let you be in control of how

A few years back, Microsoft introduced Teams, a communication tool that is used by hundreds of millions of users around the planet. As the platform has matured, the company has turned the product into a collaboration hub and it is now the backbone of Office 365. While there are a few things I do not like about the app including the fact that the calendar does not fully sync with Outlook, the biggest frustration is related to downloads. For reasons I cannot understand, Microsof

Last week, Microsoft released Windows 11 – a new OS - and with it a big marketing push to convince all of us to upgrade. At nearly the same time, we also made available our first release candidate of Start11 to help you create a more personal and productive Start menu and taskbar. This is an exciting time for fa

If you could jump into a time machine, back to about 2006-ish, you would find me in college dorm room building Media Center PCs with Hauppauge tuner cards. Once the hardware was assembled, the next step was installing ObjectDock so that the Windows desktop could easily be navigated from the couch using a media center remote. It was around this time that I met Brad Wardell and began to understand what was possible with Windows. Many of us, especially if you are reading this, li
