At long last I have it working. After repeated attempts, taking into account everything said above I was able to install it today. It seems to have been possible following this morning's BIOS update from Hewlett Packard. Not sure why that makes a difference - but it did...! It could explain somehow why Fences worked on my other machines and not this one? Either way, the issue is resolved.

OK. I'll try working through what it might be. But I have already tried installing in a new user account and using selective startup via msconfig, switching off everything. All the settings I have are identical to the settings I have on my laptop, on which Fences 4 is running fine. So the mystery continues. Thanks for your ideas, though. I will try and work out what is going on and update you when I find out (hopefully).
Aha - we're getting somewhere. Thank you for your suggestion. Fences installs OK and works normally in a Sandbox. Graham
Any updates? I have tried everything...! With a clean install on a new and fresh admin account and with a restricted startup, only one instance of Fences appears after installation, not two. As I have said, this only happens on this desktop machine and not on my laptop. It can't be a conflict with any other running software as I have eliminated that with the selective startup and the fresh install to a new admin account. Does this mean there is a conflict with a hardware
I have followed your instructions (though I had already done all of that before) As you can see from the screenshot, even after a clean install only one instance of Fences is loaded
Has anybody any updates on this? Fences 4 will still not install on my desktop, though it is working happily on my laptop that has the same software/settings.
That there should be a clue that it's something very specific and unique to your PC, its apps, or its settings.
I agree, but I am struggling to find out what. Fences 3 ran OK on the laptop and desktop. Fences 4 runs OK on the laptop but will not install correctly on the desktop. Both the laptop and desktop are identical in terms of apps and settings.
Any updates? I have installed Fences 4 OK on a laptop. But it still will not install properly on my desktop. Both are HP computers and I have the same software and settings on each. So, why does it install OK on one machine, but not on the other? On checking REGEDIT I have discovered that none of the entries that appear in the Registry on the laptop appear on the desktop. It seems that the installation on the desktop is preventing registry changes. Any other ideas?
I have full admin rights. It is not a work PC. There is no VPN. Fences 3 used to install OK - I used it for several years and Fences 2 before it. But Fences 4 ends up as you see in the screenshot
Here is the screenshot as requested
As I have already said.... I have run sfc /scannow I have done DISM Restore health The error persists and is completely and identically repeatable The option in the other forum article you link to is not possible as there is only one Fences installed at startup. Not two. No matter what you say, the issue is entirely repeatable.
I have done all of the above. Clean boot. New admin user. Exactly the same problem each time. Fences will not install properly. Only one Fences Settings starts up, not two. This is completely repeatable.
@AzDude - I don't think you are reading my replies. I have already done what you suggest above and the error is completely repeatable. Nothing I do removes the problem. None of the suggestions made solves the problem.
Thanks @AzDude - but as I said, Fences only enables once. There is no way of making it double enabled.
It's Windows 11 Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.469) Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz 32GB RAM Fences is only listed ONCE By the way, Fences 3 worked OK on this machine until two weeks ago. That started misbehaving, hence the upgrade to Version 4 With Fences 3 installed, upon restarting all desktop icons and fences are not visible. However, they appear as soon a
That didn't help. The problem is completely repeatable. The installation does not ask for my registration key at any point. It produces the following dialog box TWICE Upon rebooting, nothing happens. I launch "Customize Fences" and I get the following: <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/4
I have installed Fences 4 (latest version). I have Windows 11 (latest update). Fences 4 installation routine runs correctly (it seems) and issues a "need to restart" dialog afterwards. I restart, the Customize Fences icon is on the desktop and when I double click on that I get a warning saying "Fences does not appear to be loaded. You may need to reinstall Fences". So, I reinstall Fences. The error repeats. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
OK - After a while of digging into each system, there is a common application which I wasn't using but which was loading. This is TextExpander. When that is unloaded there are NO problems with Start 10. Thank you for your help but this is now solved and I have informed the publishers of TextExpander about the issue.
OK - getting nearer to finding things out I suppose....I set up the Sandbox and installed Start 10 and there are NO problems whatsoever. So, if there is no issue there this would suggest it is not an Intel graphics thing. Also, having removed Kaspersky I have shown it is not a conflict with that. The issue is that the problem is repeatable on two different computers that are set up differently. I will delve closer to locate anything that is loading on both
Also, just as an update, I completely uninstalled Kaspersky and the issue persists, so it does not appear to be a conflict there.
If I use the Ctrl Key nothing happens. All I get is the standard Windows 10 menu and if I select Windows Administrative Tools from there, anything opens OK, such as Event Viewer. If I hover on Windows Administrative Tools, the sub menu appears on the right. Selecting any item in that list leads to an explorer.exe crash. If I click on the Windows Administrative Tools (not on anything in the sub menu) that leads to the explorer.exe crash. If I select any Windows Administ
I have Kaspersky Internet Security - but the problem persists when I switch that off
I have done the clean boot. Problem persists. I have even done a clean Windows install on one machine. Problem persists. I have created a new user. Problem persists. The two machines are not similar in settings / apps as they are being used for different purposes. There are two common features, though. They both use Start 10 and they both use Intel graphics. The event viewer shows an explorer.exe crash: Faulting application path: C:\WINDOW
Yes - version 1.95. Thanks for forwarding this to the team and for your support today. I'll keep an eye out for any further updates.
I did do the purging/reinstalling as shown on the help page. The problem persists. One other thing - on every install of Start10 it creates a file in the Users folder which is a file of the same name as the main user folder. That file has a single entry which is the key name of one of the users as in "S-1-5-21-2060475710-34936908-3005441367-1006" That file disappears upon uninstalling Start 10 and reappears when installing Start 10. Could this be the sourc
