Well if you rush carriers I don't think you'll be able to counter a LRF rush simply because they can build more than you. Best thing to do is make sure you as many long range frigs as your enemy and then try to get some carriers for a tactical advantage.

^^^ And they completely ignore shields. Thing I don't like about caps is that any decent fleet will be able to focus fire them and take out your valuable caps in less than 30 seconds each.

a few quibbles: For TEC, even before 1.09, the Marza is so much better than the akkan that it's worth not having the colonize ability. Also, wait until the price of crystal drops before you buy it. Prices start out very high, wait a few minutes and save ~100 credits. If you upgrade your planet ASAP, someone has done the math on this, you will have LESS credits than someone who did not for the first 26 minutes. Not to mention you'll be slower at getting those LRF's.

So for TEC and advent I know how to play well. I also know about what my later game fleet will look like (hoshikos and kodiaks for TEC, lots of illums, guardians for advent) with of course some wiggle room for what my opponent is doing. Of course I always spam fighters too, no matter what. But for Vasari, I really don't know. I build assialents like crazy in the beginning to push that advantage, and research phase missles to push that advantage, but then I'm at a loss.<

Well if you have armistice, then hopefully you have lots of hoshikos by that point. So you use armistice, and get 60 seconds of hull repair, while the other guy basically sits and watches. Or you can use it to more effectively harrass your opponent. Kill stuff on undefended planets... the calvary shows up... wait for the last second and armistice... you just destroyed his crap without losing hardly any of your forces.

You destroy the flight craft themselves.... they reproduce more for free. You destroy the carriers.. the flight craft still can attack for a good while. I'll just do what I've always done... spam fighters. No bombers, no flak. Lots and lots of fighters so that I don't even have to worry about their strike craft and can ignore their carriers cause my strike craft are making sure HIS strike craft is useless.

In most games you will only research a select few techs. But phase missiles are definitly extremely valuable, even necessary for vasari. I usually get at least 20% phase penetration. I mean they are just so great. 20% + of the damage you do with assailents fighters, bombers, and some cap ships bypasses shields, bypasses shield mitigation, and goes straight for the hull. It's not unusual with a good vasari fleet to kill cap ships when they still have 100-200 shields lef

Well the fact that pirates are a problem for you is a sympton of the real problem. The pirates themselves are not your problem. You problem is that you don't have a proper fleet. If you knew how to build a good fleet and defend properly, 1/3 of your ships should be able to stop pirates with minimal losses. So basically you need to go about finding how to get a good fleet going. It's off topic so I won't get into it now. As for the pirates...

Of course it's "fair", silly. To combat illuminators, you need to know that he's doing it as early as you can find out. Then you spam carriers. Also, start hammering him before he gets it up and running (as in 100+ illums). Good scouting combined with some small fleets of LRM's or bombers to focus on killing his military labs early in the game. Or you with TEC and vasari you can straight out outproduce him and send in a smal

Cap ships are good for bombarding planets. I build them instead of the bombing frigs. My personal favorite cap ship is the progenitor. Shield regen is amazing and you get it early. The planet development cost decrease is a good boost as well. Not to mention it's the heaviest hitting colonizer.

Vasari with Returning Armada. I've seen a guy go from worst fleet with almost 0 ships to having twice as many ships as anyone in about 45 minutes. And he didn't have to buy any of them! Granted this was multiplayer, but the same applies to you. Also fully upgraded assailants are crazy good. That being said, Advent has the "best" late game fleet.

I generally use all the initial fleet capacity building cobalts, and and then after that rush heavy cruisers and then hoshikos.
A problem I've noticed is that the illuminator, now that it's damage ability has been lowered, is uneven when comparing the difficulty at obtaining the vessel to its benefits, especially when compared to Assailant. Perhaps giving it a bonus that is not a damage type, such as increased turning speed, more shield or armor or hit points, or moving beam enhancing technology from it's tech 3 requirement to tech 2. Just look into it, you may find that no changes are required. You should also loo
The scout bomb ability is a third tier tech in the military tree. I have no idea what it's called but it has a picture of a stopwatch. Once it's teched, the ability is turned on for all of your scouts. Be careful. Know where they are so when it turns on you can disable the autocast, and I do mean on all scouts....except for your scouts that are on auto explore and scouting. Ok, once it's teched, you have to send them one by one and tell them to target a building with this ability. You wil

amish how do you use the scout bomb ability? I've tried sending in like 30 of them and they do very little good.
Actually, the amperage is extremely high: About 40 kiloamperes, according to the Wikipedia. The problem is actually finding a way to store that energy. I know of no technology that can store that much energy in the fraction of a second that the lightning bolt exists for. It does indeed destroy pretty much whatever it strikes. We're much more likely to have working large scale fusion power plants long before we can harness the energy of lightning.
OK you're right, lightning

This isn't a problem for me in single player, but in MP I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I know, from experience with pretty much every other RTS game and from others on this board, that being aggressive is the best way to win. This means sending in ships early and often to destroy a military lab here, a small batch of ships there, etc. But whenever I try to be aggressive, I end up losing the ships I sent while doing little
