After months of trying to understand the source of the problem, I have discovered that it is ObjectDock Plus. When it is running, it interferes with highlighting (what some people call "painting" text) in other programs such as Word and Eudora. That is, the highlighting won't stick and I have to re-highlight multiple times (using mouse) before I can copy and paste the highlighted text. This problem goes away once I unload ObjectDock.
