I have meant for some time to begin keeping a Journal. I don't smoke in my house anymore (and the goal is to be quit completely by the time my wife and I move into our new house at the end of next month...here's hoping), so I often find myself sitting out on our balcony, carrying on conversations with myself in my head about any and every topic imaginable. I'

I'm kinda new here, but this is a subject close to my heart. That being said, I would have to agree with BakerStreet in offering constructive criticism of this piece. While I haven't read any of your other entries for comparison, I did think it difficult to follow this one's logic from beginning to end. The perspective did rather jump around, and many of its better points seemed obscured in seemingly intentionally verbose and rambling phrasologies and
I won't dispute the merits of Mac over PC (fact is, I agree that it's better in a lot of areas), or of AAC over WMA. But note that I said "the specific, proprietary version of AAC that Apple uses," and not AAC in general. Would it hurt you to read before you start slinging your petty little paranoid sarcasms my way? Either way, I don't really care. I have no intention of buying an HP iPod any more than I would the costly and restrictive Apple iPod (especially since the HP one will be ju
I have to agree with Sonicbum, here. While Frogboy is only quoting the NeoWin article, and therefore may not be exhibiting the bias himself, the article is full of the same old tired anti-MS sentiment that's been floating around the net for years. Sometimes it has its place, but here's one area where Microsoft has done it right--for themselves, the industry, and the consumer. WMA is a much super
Will that Icon Toolbar feature work on WB 4? Does the beta of WB4 on OD already contain this functionality?
Thanks. Those two helped alot, and did exactly what I neede them to do.
I've noticed this too. I haven't figured out the pattern yet, but it will work sometimes. There is a particular font I use with several skins, and I had a dickens of a time getting it to set in the "final" release of WB4 (though some earlier betas seemed not to have any problems with it). I finally got it work, but only after some unrememberable sequence of set, apply, ok, apply, cancel, reload, etc. I imagine what you're trying to do is along the same lines, and therefore *will* work i
OK, so I have several objects lining the edges of my screen. Some are DX objects, one is Sysmetrix, one is ObjectDock, and there are a few others. Each takes up little space, but for various reasons I like them all to be visible, all the time. Obviously, I don't want them interfering with open application windows or getting in the way, so I can't just simply set them all to "Always on Top" for fear they'll interfere or block important data in maximized windows. But with needing to see e
Object Desktop can take up variable memory depending on which OD apps you have running, and which skins or themes you're loading with each. For example, most WindowBlinds skins take up very little RAM; but there are a few, depending on the graphics used and some internal skin settings, that can take up to as much as 8 or 9 MB (though that is rare). Most use less than what the system would assign to Windows by default for drawing and maintaining the normal Windows XP "skins". Ad
Thanks. DLed Winamp 2.8 and it works like a champ with this new version of Sysmetrix. BTW, this *is* the appropriate forum, since this is a feedback thread on Sysmetrix 2 beta, which has problems with Winamp 3 despite claims on its website of compatibility with "Winamp 2 and later". As for this new build of Sysmetrix, WOW! Despite some stability issues when customizing a skin (to be expected from a beta), this thing is absolutely awesome. It wraps features of about 6 different
Well, I downloaded the Winamp Version2 Plugin Manager from the Winamp website. It makes the buttons in Sysmetrix match up with their Winamp counterparts as fas as sisplay goes (the "Play" button in the Sysmetrix skin highlights when Winamp is playing, etc) but it doesn't give the buttons any control over Winamp (pressing any button has no effect). Also, the playtime displays, as does the bitrate, but no Artist/Song title displays, the slider doesn't function, and the Bitrate actually sh
Heh. That's an ingenious marketing scheme. Have users download the browser, and immediately prompt them that their eval period is up and they must register to the tune of $19.95... Anyway, thought I'd drop a line to let you know that the Standard version of the browser has already timed out, at least for me (and I've never had it installed before today).
Hi all. Long time no peep. Anyway, I'm using the latest versions of WB, DesktopX and WinFX. I've had no real problems of late (except for the speed of WinFX, understandable as it's in alpha) until this morning. I applied the new "Spectre" skin for WB (awesome skin, btw), and after doing so, my desktop looks horrid (the DesktopX background shows only around objects, and not anywhere else). Reloading DX bring me a popup saying "You have Active Desktop enabled...Please disable it to contin
Heh. I just renewed after a year's lapse (money probs). Looks like I was just in time!
I never could get the hang of masking in Photoshop/PSP. I use CorelDraw8 for shapes/gradients/etc, and MS Image Composer 1.5 for actual bitmap editing. MSIC is completely sprite-based, which I find much easier and more intuitive than mask-based editing. The only drag is that MSIC is *old* (comparatively), and it's getting to be a bit behind the times in terms of power/features. Add me to the list for MS Optical Intellimice. I use one religiously. I keep toying with the idea of getting a
Count me in for the David Lynch fandom. I've seen "Wild at Heart" more times than any other movie excpet for "The Princess Bride". "My dog....barks...some." Admittedly, I've never read the LotR trilogy. I read "The Hobbit" for the first time a few years ago. I've just never gotten around to reading the trilogy, though. I will, hopefully, before the movie comes out. Last theatre movie I saw
Hehe, Jafo. But seriously, the former is far more likely than the latter...
>> How does one one one or create one? So many quesitons... Please? Shed some light on our confused minds? Hehe...Talk about confused minds...Did that make sense to anyone else? Just messin with ya, paxx.
I imagine it won't happen until the final code for WB3.0 is released. But I'm with you. There are modifications I'd like to make to a couple of Alexandrie's XP skins to suit my own personal tastes, but without support in SS, or any decent documentation of how to code for WB3, I'm lost...
I's still love to get my hands on a little instruction for how to optimize skins for XP--how to skin the Start Panel, how fonts are controled in the "XPstuff" file, etc. I can't make heads nor tails of it in the skins I've downloaded, and I can't find a good tutorial for it. Anyway, I think the separate section is a great idea. And I cast my vote for the IP section for XP-optimized icons, too.
Cool. Thanks. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle. I gave up on 16-bit color a long time ago. Nothing seemed to look right in it. Gradients were always wavy, colors looked off somehow. I've been running 32-bit since I got the original RivaTNT 16mb wonder back several years ago. I've never gone back. But you're right about it's performance hit. I've just leanred to live with it (and I get by on blaming it on my ancient 400mhz proc...).
I noticed in Brad's screenshot of his current desktop that he mentions utilizing a "Windows XP-aware Icon Package". What exactly is that? Just curious.
mmm...munster (a little halloween humor ) Anyway, I agree with Integer, and paxx. The personal attacks need to stop from all sides. I don't know who posted the "I0c is a Wanker" thread (I didn't see it on the board), but that's just as bad as I0c's original post about Brad. Worse, perhaps, if it was written by someone who was telling people how wrong it is to personally attack another membe
I'm sorry Jesh. I wasn't trying to imply that you shouldn't state your opinion. I was simply disagreeing with it, for the reasons I gave above. Please, continue to express your opinion on what you like and dislike. I, for one, love a good argument. And I fully agree with you that being a member of a community gives you a voice and welcomes your opinion. It is valued, even if disagreed with.
Jesh, Sorry, but I don't agree. This isn't like the slew of XP-based skins we saw a few months ago. Most of those were just direct copies, pixel for pixel, of WinXP, either colored differently or not. If you put the images that made those skins up against the images used by MS, they were (practically) identical (or a worse almost-identical copy). Now do the same with the images that make up Alexandrie's skins. They're not even close. Sure, some of the shapes are similar (that's
