Day One-My Windowblinds Anti-tutorial Tutorial

Entry One

11:39 AM
My biggest hurdle so far has been in not knowing where to start. I have opend SkinStudio, too many times to count, and closed it after after a few minutes. I truly don't know what I am doing. So, I decided to post in the forum at WC, to ask if anyone could offer a ‘good or best place to start’. Forgetting that there are 'Trolls' a foot, I allowed myself to be taken by surprise with the response " uhhhh.....how about the START panel?".

12:07 PM
Having survived the 'Troll', I am set upon by a scorpion and a werewolf. However, they both agree in that I should start with the 'window frames' and 'buttons'. It is further suggested that I start with an 'existing skin' and go through it, altering it 'piece by piece'. Using an existing skin as a base sounds good to me. And you don't have to warn me about ripping and copying and all that. I know it's wrong, but that aside....with me at the controls youcan be rest assured it will be severly altered by the time I am done. I just don't know if it will be usable.

12:50 PM
Opened SkinStudio and made the fatal mistake of checking my forum post one more time. It has been suggested that I design the entire project first, in wallpaper size. A 'Design Board'. Keep it simple and do the details once I am ready to open SkinStudio. I like this idea, so I am going to go with this. (Note to self: Do NOT refer back to that forum after this!)

1:08 AM
I worked on the ‘Start Panel’ for about 4 hours this afternoon. Why so long? Well, the first version sucked. When I realized what I was doing wrong, I started over. Now, keep in mind, I am only working on the ‘Design Board’ right now. The other reason it took so long is that I ended up with about 6 different color variations. I need two. I am making a ‘sub-skin’ for this.

This is the start panel design. Geometrically speaking, this is what I want. The colors are only what I am using for this article.

I’m pretty pleased with it. Not so happy with the ‘task bar backgrounds. “A” does not do what I ‘want’ it to do. I don’t like the way it repeats. “B” is not quite what I want, in as far as the graphics. I have to do some shading, but it worked well when I tested it.

Only slightly into this Design Board and I am wondering (after having looked over SkinStudio numerous times) how I am going to apply this stuff, especially, the Start Panel. I should probably start with something easier, but for me it’s impossible to keep it simple.

Notes: a. I am working with the SkinStudio that came with WB v5.
b. Icon Pack is about 8/10 done. A few more, them I have to convert the PNG’s.

haha where to start...where to start. the ever present question. from the looks of things you're off to a great start!! i always find it easier to desing my taskbar and start button and work from there. the taskbar usually defines my theme.

how do you apply this start panel you've created? it's easy. you quite simply "chop" it up. in S/S the start panel is divided up into 5 sections. the user panel (top), left panel, right panel, more programs background and bottom panel. all you need to do is decide how large you'd like the images to be and define it in skinstudio. now go to photoshop and create a blank image for the size you've defined. hit the handy "merge visible" command in photoshop, drag your start panel over to the blank image and move it until it fits inside the image frame. repeat for all panels. don't forget to adjust your content and sizing margins accordingly.

i will say this. the curved line inside your programs panels (pink and dark pink) is going to be a nightmare to line up.

I'm glad I didn't go with my original idea, then. Though, it could happen..
I'll have to see how this one goes.

*eagerly awaits the next installment*
Looking this over, how exactly is that shiny effect (the top of the menu and the heart) produced? I've tried some things using soft brushes (doesn't work) and with gradients and the selection tool (close, but never quite the effect I want). It's probably insanely easy, but feel I've missed something somewhere...

That really looks good so far, PO! Really nice design. I have a suggestion for your taskbar, since you are not so pleased with the way it repeats. Try making the taskbar long enough that it doesn't repeat so many times. Just a suggestion. This is going to be a great skin, I can see already. Your starting point is far better than any I have started with. Good luck, and don't forget to take breaks!!

I am going CRAZY!!!! (that's why I haven't posted a third chapter yet)

I keep second guessing myself. Hard for me to stick to one design or...when I gat one uploaded, it looks like crap and I have to redo it.

This is NOT like making graphics for ANYTHING else.

I'm finding I have to simplify a lot of things. I'm not used to working in 'small, confined, area's'.

The most annoying things so far are as follows....

1. Trying to understand the sizing issues...buttons, taskbar, etc. Stretching, tiling..grrrr.
2. Wanting to use multi-color graphics where I don't understand the sizing. (The taskbar issue) They tile all wrong, stretch all wrong...grrrr. But I'm learning.
3. The colors I see in my graphics program (PhotoshopCS) are NOT what you get in the finished skin. They tend to run a little darker.
4. Not knowing which elements I have room to play with as far as size...and how to do it. Some things you have to use the MagicPink to get the size you want.

I don't know how many people are following these threads. Show me a sign of life or somethin' so I know if I should continue installments. (I did get one encouraging email, to my surprise. But you don't have to email. I check my threads a few times a day)

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Until I lose it and end up taking hostages over this....later.

Po', Hang in there, you're ahead of me, as I've been around here for years, always downloading, never uploading. Seeing you go thru the hoops gives me incentive to try some things, now that I've upgraded my graphics a bit. Thanks especially for the details, above, so I can relate when I get there and not be discouraged. So far, I've just taken apart themes in Skin Studio to see what makes them tick...usually they don't work afterward, but each time it's more familiar ground. Don't take all the hostages...I'll need some myself...
