Everyone with laptops.

Everyone with laptops.

Everyone that has a laptop needs to check into this problem.  I contacted SD about this and they have yet to duplicate the problem which is getting kind of old.  Anyway, everyone that's got WB5 on their laptops needs to set their Power Management to Laptop (to allow the PM to throttle their CPU speed) and then look at the CPU speed (Right click on My Computer and Properties) with WB5 unloaded and then with it loaded.  For some wacky reason on my AMD Turion ML-37 proc in my Ferrari with WB5 loaded the proc maxes out it's speed.  When I unload it goes back to it's 800MHz setting (maxed it's at 2.0GHz).  Anyway, nothing is killing the task manager so something with WB has to be pushing the CPU just enough to make it think it needs to go to full power.  Anyway, people with Intel Centrino setups should have speed stepping as well.  Anyone out there with WB5 on laptops really need to check into this and see if you're seeing the same issues.  Thanks

This actually looks more like a CPU problem than a WB problem.

Yeah, they will tell me that it's an application problem.

Neil actually said..

It is possible WB is exposing a flaw in the power saving driver

(my emphasis) so there's not likely a problem with the actual hardware rather the (software) driver that controls it. A bug in software? certainly likely I would've thought...

Yep... you and Neil must be right.  50 billion applications out there in the world and SD's "Perfect App" exposes a flaw in AMD's processor design.

Hey Civic98: you certainly present a compelling & thought provoking set of facts in this app misfunction here.......well articulated & food for thought for sure as your lap is built for durability & functionality

You might want to re-read Neil's comments & reply #26 above - he wonders if the power saving driver may have a flaw that has been exposed, not that AMD's processor design is the problem. Neil is also eminently qualified to hold an opinion and is hardly blowing you off - SD are attempting to replicate the problem.

umm....it kinda looks like Civic got a refund as he is no longer a "current Customer" in his profile Daiwa.....& what's with the facetious "cheers"

It's not facetious, Citizen.

if you insist, but you do come across as arrogant & facetious - regarding this incident & others of lack of Stardock Support & buggy apps, please refer to this blog;

Daiwa, I, for one, have found you pleasent and helpful. Thanks for being a member of the community.

initiatedsean441, You have been around long enought to form your own opinion of the people here, but I do wonder why you have never seen or choosen to comment on Daiwa's use of "Cheers" as a closing before now. A quick check shows she's been using it at least since July 2004: http://groups.google.com/group/stardock.windowblinds/browse_thread/thread/8285e30cbd867a6/4031a59a55fe6212?lnk=st&q=cheers+daiwa+site%3Awincustomize.com&rnum=142&hl=en#4031a59a55fe6212

Try to remember that textual communication does not always communicate the nuances of the spoken word. It's better to error on the side of positive relations.

Let's just hope that Neil's tests are successful with the new Laptop and the problem is resolved quickly.

WC is the best! In other forums a flame war would be erupting.

initiatedsean441, Thanks for helping make this site a community.

Thanks, Zubaz. Not sure what would have triggered that assessment (maybe some of my snide remarks in the JU politics forums, but not anything here in the WC forums - what's to be arrogant about here?), but I can accept it as genuine and no offense taken.

(Cheers omitted for fear of offense)

Names (nicknames, etc.) that end in "a" always get associated with the double X in my head. Leftovers from a previous language. Apologies.

No worries. I got tagged with the nick by my golfing partners because of the brand of driver I played for about 12 years - name's Dave, hence davidaiwa, which I've abbreviated to Daiwa because I'm lazy.

Che... oops.

yes Aaron, I have toured & participated amoungst most of the most popular skinning sites, & yes, WC probably does conduct itself the best & is the most useful & state-of-the-art - warts & all; Customize.org came across as really the most uncivilized, hateful & vicious amoungst the group - they give new meaning to 'trailer park' - I can see why Jafo is necessary to keep the vicious & uncivilized in line - a mod inspiring fear like that is akin to a bouncer in a 'hot', 'where it's at' bar

& Dave....cheers to Aaron in the above context would'a been cool...no need to walk on eggs lol

It's all good - buds to the end, Citizen.

Since I don't want anyone to take my remarks personally (if I disagree with someone, it's about ideas expressed or positions taken, with the rare exception of folks who are deliberately insulting or intentionally offensive), I virtually always sign off with Cheers, regardless of context - force of habit. Cheesy, perhaps, but there ya go.

Wow, quite the development in this thread.  Anyway, I didn't get a refund, nor did I ask for one directly to Neil.  I like WB5, just wish a couple of issues would hurry up and get solved for me.  Aside from the expansion arrows on my Favorites (items, not folders), taskbar graphs stopping when clicked (when using PerPixle skins), no skinning of the console window, and the CPU speed maxing issues I have no other problems that I can see.  Like I've stated... I've seen 11 updates to WB5 (all beta) and none of them have resolved or even involved a fix for the problems I've listed.  Just seems like SD isn't too concerned about these issues... that's all.  To me they are major problems because to me the program is not flawless in respect to how WB4.6 was (at least flawless in my uses of it).  Hope that makes better sense to everyone.

Oh and here's a for everyone.

Hey Civic :

Your list of "flaws" would be enough for me to rid myself of it & stick w 4.6, which is what I have done - and yes the 4.6 does work flawlessly & does add to the appeal, enjoyment & functionality of my lap - it would seem 5 was rushed to release too soon - once perfected it will move the 'state of the art' of interface to a higher level - FX hasn't had an update since last Spring & it too has some bugs - DX is perfect the way it is - wish the developers would perfect what has already been released;feedback from the Forum dictating rather than working on 'Games' but perhaps they need to to draw new market - & Daiwa;thx for the contextual explanation - yes, its all good here as well.

I hardly think I 'inspire fear'...but at times we [the mods] are a necessary evil.  Now and then people can tend to get a wee bit feral and Lord-of-the-flies-ish, so it helps to have someone there to whack heads, slit nostrils and utilise their size tens as suppositories....

Strangely, I've never thought of 'cheers' as 'arrogant'....probably because I use it myself...though in Professional letters it's often "I await your favourable response..."

Sometimes the suggestive closure works....

Beautifully summed up in an original Australian way lol...do remember that if certain salutations are used in the wrong context they can incite insult...that's why professionals who travel overseas must study the customs & jargon of the country 1rst to prevent something so unfortunate - & you are too right about the suggestive closure

Well, like I said, I really like WB5.  That's why I still use it despite it's short list (to me anyway) of issues.  I however would think that SD would go through this forum and seriously consider the bug reports we list here as the #1 things to look at fixing in progressive beta releases or final builds.  I've even gone to the length of calling in the issues when I first saw them.  This was right after the first release version of WB5.  Still it's gone overlooked.  Anyway, in the end I'm sure they will all get fixed, but I have this weird feeling that the fix of all these bugs will be called WB5.1.  I also think that a lot of these issues are deeply rooted in the graphical card/driver uses that WB5 depends on to make things happen on a system.  The problem is that I don't believe SD has the inventory/configurations of what all it's users have in order to provide proper flawless functionality for everyone.  Nor do I believe they are properly communicating their findings (if they expose a flaw) to the developers of the drivers or hardware of what the WB5 core engine depends on.  (i.e. if they find WB5 exposes an issue with a graphics driver or chipset, I don't think they actually call the maker of said chipset or driver and push them to make the corrections.)  I doubt that WB5 is used by a large market of the people that work for places like ATI or NVIDIA... I could be wrong, but those people are mostly concerned that their hardware/software works with their #1 dependant applications... games.  So in the end the futile battle of perfecting an application such as WB5 is left up to the individual user... they are left to constantly complain about a problem until a solution is found.  It's the old "The squeaky wheel get the grease" proverb.

By God Civic, you are nothing if you aren't articulate, logical, fairminded & patient. I am sure Neil will prevail & get those 'bugs' worked out. For now, I am going to wait & see but where I just upgraded my Dell Laptop to a state of the art Toshiba Satellite Lap in June, I am not of the mind to upgrade the video card to support the 'hardware accelleration' required of WB5.

You'd be wrong on that score, though you can argue forever about what constitutes "properly". They've been pushing nVidia for years to optimize their drivers' 2D support, to fully enable WindowFX's transition features in particular. Through no fault of Stardock's, nVidia hasn't followed through, since you are quite correct - the only market they care about is the 3D gaming market. Rather unfair to hold SD responsible - we should be complaining to the video driver makers (I have, repeatedly) in order to get some of that "grease", though I'm not optimistic they'll do anything to address their 2D deficiencies. Even ATI, which has had excellent 2D support for a long time, has managed to screw up 2D with some of the recent Catalyst releases.

Daiwa

hmmm Daiwa....this explains why when I enabled my FX on my second Lap since purchasing the app in the Spring of '04 for my Dell Latitude & subesquently on my Toshiba Satellite I get an error msg & the cursed blue crash screens saying a.) drivers not verified & b.)in FX it states my current video card will not allow for the 'accelleration'& to disable 'hardware accelleration' - after having done that FX does work better but will freeze windows up if I have too many browsers open or I am working in Word - excellent research & knowledge on your part & thx for sharing
