Once upon a time there was a bug called Norton....

Once upon a time there was a bug called Norton....

Some programs can be a pain in the butt to use/retain....others also a pain to remove...and yet others are a pain once they're gone.

Norton doesn't screw around....they make one suit all.

Once I couldn't convince NAV2004 to actually SCAN ANYTHING [timely just days after updating its subscription], I decided it was time to move on....you know, actually get a proggy that worked.

I uninstalled Norton...using it's special removal tool and all...made a neat job of it....

or...

So I thought.

A week or two later...Microsoft Update didn't do its thing....

Me thunked...'hmmm...life's a bitch, etc....but it'll sort itself...probably'...

Alack and alas, no.

Google came to the rescue .... GIGO was adopted..... and days later I got a salient 'hit'.

Windows/MS Update uses a service called 'BITS'...and guess what?....the Norton Uninstaller disables BITS....

Dunno....probably just for a lark

.....and you cannot re-enable it, either......seems the appropriate solution is to re-install Service Pack 2, as that fixes it.....

Well....I haven't done that yet....reinstalled SP2.....probably because that Norton thingie will spit a dummy and reformat my motherboard out of spite.

Once upon a time, Norton Utilities was a handy proggy.....back when 486s were the bees' knees.

These days you could save yourself a lot of time and effort and just auto-lobotomize.....;p

I am curious about one thing, before you wipe it out. What does your WindowsUpdate.log file say?

crud. been following this and the other. been seeing auto update shield in systray off and on. put mouse over it & it was at 0 percent, then disappeared. went to windows update, checked history and found out everything has failed since mid june (about the time of my own norton fiasco). tried the step 1 = successful but no go / step 2 = 'not necessary to run, click ok'. looked at the castle cops link - will take me a while to re-re-re-read and try to absorb. life woulda been much simplier if i didn't know.

Newest genius strike by Symantec : Many people can't get mails with outlook or outlook express after the last live update of Internet Security 2005. Well, now mail is damn secure.

A couple of weeks ago I did a clean install to rid myself of NIS 2005 and all its annoying bugs. I'm now using AVG, which is working flawlessly, and my old Norton Personal Firewall 2002 which works 99% ok. I say 99% because sometimes, with WB loaded, you can't see the text on the pop-up dialogue box NPF uses to configure internet access for a proggie...

I use Norton Internet Security 2005 and I haven't had any problems. I was haveing a lot of trouble with the 2004 version though. I would get nailed with a virus that had some of the same symtoms like Windows Update not working I would also lose something else but I don't remember what it was, it was major I just don't remember. Before I had the SP2 XP Disk the only thing I could do was format, this happen several times before I upgraded to the 2005 version, I haven't had the problem since. I also haven't had any problem recieveing emails, I use Microsoft Office XP with the lastest update. I just checked. The only thing is now I have to check my spam folder and OK emails or make then spam which I can live with.

The only Norton I use is GoBack... because damn Symantec bought it... It is a must-hhave proggy though.... No problems so far.....

I miss the good old Peter Norton days......

Using NIS 2003, no issues (have not tried to uninstall it though) - similar problem as Fuzzy with internet access dialog, except it is just the OK button that does not show. Had to poke around until it clicked - hmm.

May have to look at AVG for next computer.

Looks like Norton digs in too deep for their own good.

Glad you had a happy outcome, Jafo.

Hey Bushman, don't ever uninstall that Norton 2005.... . I had the same problems as these guys. Racked my brain, research and all, will probably have to reinstall SP 2.....bummer.

SP2 reinstall has definitely worked...though with some of the other things I'd tried Drive Image 7 needed a reinstall too...as I'd broken it...

***pats self on head for not useing norton...***

i say get v-com's SystemSuite 5, it's the whole package and works. and needs no subscriptions!

I use the minimally bloated version of NAV... The corporate client (since it was provided to me for free from my University). None of the subscription nonsense, none of the fancy/bloated/clunky interface crap. It just sits in the corner and does its thing. It even uninstalls nicely.

It's the ONLY Norton product I'll use. I tried installing Norton Utilities about 2 years ago and it completely thrashed my system. Lost all my data, had to reformat/partition the hard drive and everything. Very nasty experience.

Norton used to rock... now it just sucks

Reinstalling SP 2 worked for me too.....

Geez...someone must have snuck in last night and swapped my machine with one that works....no sign of a bug anywhere....
