Once upon a time there was a bug called Norton....

Some programs can be a pain in the butt to use/retain....others also a pain to remove...and yet others are a pain once they're gone.

Norton doesn't screw around....they make one suit all.

Once I couldn't convince NAV2004 to actually SCAN ANYTHING [timely just days after updating its subscription], I decided it was time to move on....you know, actually get a proggy that worked.

I uninstalled Norton...using it's special removal tool and all...made a neat job of it....

or...

So I thought.

A week or two later...Microsoft Update didn't do its thing....

Me thunked...'hmmm...life's a bitch, etc....but it'll sort itself...probably'...

Alack and alas, no.

Google came to the rescue .... GIGO was adopted..... and days later I got a salient 'hit'.

Windows/MS Update uses a service called 'BITS'...and guess what?....the Norton Uninstaller disables BITS....

Dunno....probably just for a lark

.....and you cannot re-enable it, either......seems the appropriate solution is to re-install Service Pack 2, as that fixes it.....

Well....I haven't done that yet....reinstalled SP2.....probably because that Norton thingie will spit a dummy and reformat my motherboard out of spite.

Once upon a time, Norton Utilities was a handy proggy.....back when 486s were the bees' knees.

These days you could save yourself a lot of time and effort and just auto-lobotomize.....;p

Norton isn't the only cause of BITS problems. I had the same problem recently, and it wasn't caused by Norton (which was uninstalled prior to a reformat or two) Several other people have had a simmilar problem. Reinstalling SP2 set things right again, though.

Yes,...found it, Gary....looks like I missed your last comment on it...so missed the solution.

The link is one heck of a process to go through....if all of it is needed.

Might be 'easier' to just re-install SP2...

Do step 1 and 2....I already had you do #3. Try the update after each step (if it works, you're done).

Step 1 and service will not start.....

Step 2 and service will not start...dl's fail...

OK...try one more thing. Open Microsoft update site and click on Change Settings. Scroll to bottom and check to stop using Microsoft Update. Follow any prompts and re-try the update site...

Step 3 and service didn't start..and dls failed...
Nope...that didn't work either...

Just a thought.....you don't have ActiveX disabled by chance, do you?
Step 5 ...the services were already there...

Pretty clever of them to get the word out that deleting their programs will hose your system, huh?

I used to swear by the Norton Utilities - they just worked. I still use WinFax & pcAnywhere, but those are the only Norton programs to get near my PC these days.

Cheers,
Daiwa

Open IE and go to Tools>Manage Add-Ons. In the "Show" window, select "Add-ons that have been
used by Internet Explorer" and ensure that WuWebControlClass is enabled. If it is, then you're correct that doing the ugly with SP2 is the most expedient solution.....

Lobotomy anyone...?

I even typed in all the microsoft sites to 'trusted'...manually...just in case one was missing...
Since doing all the other junk...WuWebclass isn't there anymore...only the new one...MuWebclass....and that's enabled.

.....watch yourself....Microsoft will think you like them.

MUWebControl Class...to be accurate

Yes...looks like time to redo SP2.

Still...got oodles of entertainment from resubscribing to NAV.....

Cheap at half the price....

When you disabled the 'new' Update page it should have reset to the old WuWebclass. Delete (disable) the MuWebclass and try the update....

sigh....still no luck...BITS won't start...

I have both...WU and MU

Get the SP2 disk out Honey.......I believe Norton has reached it's entertainment value limit...
