WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-Out: Release

WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-Out: Release

Let us know what we need to improve..

It's been a bumpy launch so far.  This isn't just an update to the old site, it's a completely new site.

My biggest #1 priority is for us to get the site faster. MUCH faster. New features are likely going to have to wait until we get the site faster. But let us know what you think and what we need to work on the most in your opinon.

And even better the "wincustomize subscriber" award, lets single out the subscribers and unsubscribers!! Which makes things even more fun when the disputes come about of "who contributes to the site" as if the only real contribution you give is to give 20 bucks away. Or is it that since many subscribers find little use or benefit to subscribing you decided "Gee dandy, these folks deserve an award". The only real benefit I've ever seen is being able to rate works, and should that really be a "privilege".

~Well I paid $49.95 for Stardock's Object Desktop Package and I don't have the " privledge " of rating anything.
As for screen shots, they are only here for display, rating them or downloading them seems to have no purpose really. Then again, I don't even have the " privilege" of uploading a screenshot for 6 days, and i can write here until my smiley tuns blue before i'll get a reply about the ALERT: File contains no data ....a simple " yeah, we know about that problem" would be nice. Right now I can't find much to say in the way of " Nice" about the changes.
And.....you don't have a proper smiley that conveys my sentiments at this time.

OOOOHHH!! Fairyy, click on the "my account" tab, then a page should load with 3 main links in the page, the bottom one being "cross reference with your stardock account" that should get your user level equal to subscribers basically, and you should be able to rate and so forth. Wincustomize has to support itself and is not run by stardock, but they are affiliates and wincustomize will honor you purchasing software from stardock, and hence increase user level (letting you at least rate thingys =D. But you don't get an award for it

OK....yep, we know about the problem. There were/are several...but it's a huge job to initiate a new site so patience is requested.... Spell checker [conscientiously not using those green things]

No! You're...you're...not rebelling are you?

oh yeah, I heard that you couldn't have [ or ] in your name anymore because of the web not accepting that as a alphanumeric character. Should I be worried that I have [ and ] in every single one of my skins names? >_<

Now I'm definetly starting to miss clicking on a persons name and being given the option of "view this authors submissions" D=

I think the top priority should be to get the upload/update functions working correctly. Especially since the primary function of the board is to get people to do work for free, and upload it. Thi is so you can resell it in collections to help cover bandwidth cost, as well as just having the vast gallery to draw people to the site to increase ad revenue. If the artist can't upload their work, update it with improvements, and get the approval process streamlined, then you aren't getting your product to market and the whole house of cards falls.

If the original objective was to upgrade the system, to make the site faster, then I don't think the product you bought will accomplish that. I don't know if it is a matter of system load, or that the system hasn't been tweaked for speed yet, but this system is MUCH slower than the original site.

As an exclamation point to my previous post, my next action was to try to change to a different forum. Within the current site layout I got the following message:

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

I think it is time to get out the back-up tapes and restore the old site. Saturday afternoon traffic did more than bring the site to its knees, it toppled the giant. Either the server hardware or the software isn't up to the task of a site this busy. For over an hour, I couldn't get more than 1 or 2 screens deep before the system errored out. I got one of the following four error messages each time. If you are trying to debug the system I hope this helps.

Server Too Busy

NetBadger, take a break for a few days and get a grip...damn, let em get things worked out..it's a lot faster than the old site when it is going good...yesterday it was working great here and most of the time today when I have been on also...try real life for a bit and let the guys do their thing
Reply #65 Top
This will be my final post in this thread..(It seems for many a resemblance to a whiners haven..Instead of a helpful critique').I have encountered very few concerns in all the many years and with all the many products I purchase or have purchased on a regular basis... I have tried and own many other GUI tools, that most often sit idle in the corner of my drives.

In my opinion there is absolutely nothing that compares to the outstanding workmanship of the Stardock Crew and Products..This new site is in it's opening phases, and I'm very sure that once the few little bugs are worked out, it too shall project the exemplary workmanship that we have come to know as *Wincustomize*..

Boss019.. I agree with your comments..Let the people do their job, they always seem to succeed at doing it *Very Well*

Cheers...Wincustomize and Crew..

It's not the bugs that bother me, it's the little nuances that are missing from the old site.

Also, at first glance the forum looks much better but its actually a real pain in the ass trying to navigate around. The dropdown menu for sub-forums is not real intuitive. Seems to me it wouldve saved alot of time and effort to just mod a vbulletin, Invision Board or phpBB forum. Wouldve been alot better for us users too.

I agree that the Smilies need changed, but just the color, or maybe give me the option of picking the colors of them? IE: in my options? It would allow poeple to make the site more "theirs".

I have also run into a ton of problem with uploading/updating and even just getting to the site.

But as a web designer, I know (in depth) the problems these guys are facing, and if you have never tried to make a database driven site, or use aspx, or tried to make a site where hundreds or thousands of people are hitting it at the same time, then you should just sit back, and CHILL. I give all of the programmers props for getting a new site up and working, its a major undertaking, i agree they need to know of problems, but just slamming on them does no one any good.

Keep plugging away, and it will all work out in the end.
Sorry if I gave the impression I was "slamming". I'm a Web Developer for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and do database driven sites that take over 3 million hits a day. The source code posting was actually intendend to help them debug the code.

My apologies if I overdid it. I enjoy being a part of the WinCustomize community

NetBadger - wasnt meaning you, just the overall tone of this thread seemed to me to be kind of harsh.

I am not in the software business (I am a nurse) but so far I am not liking this site. I get one error message after another. I'll just have to wait and see. (no other choice really)

Piffles, let opinions be heard, good and bad. Real designers like critiques, they like to know what works, and what doesn't. And the rest like to talk about it between themselves, thats what these boards are for. No one's been out of line so far, just need to keep in mind "fixed" doesn't always mean, making it what you want, or that things will be "fixed" by the next time you visit.
Ok, I finally got my user level fixed. I'm a level 4. But I still can't create my own site..it says I'm not priveledged enough! And I can't find anything under preferences to let me choose which libraries I want to display. The new site is pretty, but I really miss the old one! I hope these problems are just temporary.
