WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-Out: Release

WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-Out: Release

Let us know what we need to improve..

It's been a bumpy launch so far.  This isn't just an update to the old site, it's a completely new site.

My biggest #1 priority is for us to get the site faster. MUCH faster. New features are likely going to have to wait until we get the site faster. But let us know what you think and what we need to work on the most in your opinon.

Getting a thread to go to the last post should be a priority, it's frustrating to go to the top of the first page everytime.

I also don't like the new smilies (sorry!), they just don't communicate. Except for this constipated guy > ...though I don't really have use for that

I like the green smilies ... but it'd be nice for some different wincustomize skins

On my "update images" page, all of the image previews are broken links. I also cannot update my desktop image because it keeps timing out.
I can see my own skins however I updated one because the preview image got messed up and now the skin is no longer in my list.

OK there's no easy way of saying this but here goes.

1. Using the release version of Firefox 1.0 browser on the old site all thumbnails in the libraries displayed fine.
Using same browser, same PC and no changes whatsoever to settings, etc on the new site and said thumbnails now
show as [AD]. Now [AD] is what ZoneAlarm does if it thinks it has found an advert. Please don't tell me to
change the settings in ZoneAlarm because the old site never had a problem with them.

2. If I clicl on Logout this is what I get:-

Server Error in '/' Application.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:1.1.4322.2032; ASP.NET Version:1.1.4322.2032

Neither of these happened with the old website a few days ago and as I have said nothing has changed at my end of things.

BTW I got the same thing with IE6 so its not Firefox either.

Also a "return to messageboard/forum" button at the bottom. I have found that using SDC to view the messageboard here is much easier than using a web browser.

I like most of the new smileys, but they are a little indistinct as to what they are conveying <---reminds of the expression on my face the last time I played soccer...football to everyone outside the USA....and took one right in the....

I agree with somebody who posted before, the libraries i miss dearly. When browsing 3000+ WB skins i find it hard to get what i want by typing in the search, considering it only seems to search the name of the skin & the user.

And with that i would also like to suggest the addition of an additional categorization method. IE :: Desktops have an added 'colors' portion which can be searched through. I have mostly blue & silver desktop/skin and it would be nice if i could search for all desktops which had a high blue content.

I have recommended the site to many many people cuz i find great stuff, but with the new site i find myself lost

Truthfully i find the site to look too professional, too much run-around to get what i want.

PS : When searching for a skin when i press enter it prompts me saying that i cannot leave the username/password blank, maybe you can fix that to where it just searches instead

Thanks for running a great database of customization. <3

Scribe Essencay,

They look like someone who ate too much cheese and beans and are now using the facilities.

It will surely take time for some of the niceties to get re-implemented. I much prefer the new site overall though. Once they have a few little things like the editor not being gigantic and a button to take me back to the top I'll be happier.

Gee...at least your SS upload. All I get is same error message in Mozilla its " Alert : File contains no data " and in Internet Explorer after uploading..." Page not displayed "
This is day 5 , same response. A Christmas SS would be nice in December...I'll skip the smily's....I hate green.

Front Page

It'd be nice if I could see the list of new entries without having to click the new tab and load another page (besides bening annoying, that's just one more hit on the server that a lot of people will be doing)

Uer Galleries

While browing user's galleries, we are presented with two columns of skins, However each is so wide that it requires horizontal scrolling to view them even when the browser is maxed at 1280x1024. The width of each entry should either be reduced, or perhaps resort to a single column.

Message Board

Regarding the main messageboard page: there are now combo boxes under each messageboard section in which you hop to a sub board. I've see two issues with this. First, the sub-boards are likely to go ignored since they are "hidden" (well not hidden but not immediately obvious and accessible).

Secondly, when selecting from one of these combo boxes, the subtopic is then loaded in the same browser window, which means I now have to browse back and reload the main messageboard.

So, it'd be nice if the subtopics were listed as hyperlinks under the main topics so that 1. they're immediately visible without haveing to mess around with a combo box, and 2. I can then middle/right-click them so that they open in a new browser tab/window such that I don't loose the main messageboard page.

Sorry, but i did'nt read in details all the previous posts, but globaly i agree with #4
i'll add (perhaps already mentionned ...)
- the possibility to set preferences for the displaying of the site, such as "on wich page do you want it to open ?" (in may case i'd be glad to open it on the "newest page"

- i think that dates of upload and updates ares missing on the main skins description

Well globaly what i miss most is the faculty of the previous version to get everything just at one click from the main page. it's no more the case

Consider testing HTTP compression to speed up site if your not using it already.

Morphh, there's a link on the top of the column under Library Search for "Advanced Search Options" to get to the catagories like before...took me a bit to find it too... (ban the green smilies)

~Well, day 6..same response after uploading for 5 minutes...any reason why SS's can be uploaded from New Zealand and Canada....but not from Eastern USA ? At least the site loads faster tonight than it had the past few days.

First catagory "I miss.."

1. Going to "My Skins" and seeing at the bottom of the list TOTALS!!!!

2. "My Skins" being put in order of items, i.e. walls first, icons second, and showing everything on 1 page. I like the feature of choosing what library to show, but you still don't have this option, and it should be the default anyway.

3. Look up at the top of this page and click on wallpapers, or object dock, OH WAIT, YOU CAN'T!! And it's the same way with many other pages on here, where you used to have the same constant navigation on EVERYPAGE for the libraries. Changing the navigation from page to page (which is confusing to the user), or making the user go to 3 different pages to get to a MAIN PART OF THE SITE, is bad design period. How many tabs do we need anyway?

4. Smileys...new green smileys.....old yellow smileys.........hmmmm well overall the quality of them are better but yellow is like, a smiley, when they change colors like that it changes what they mean half the time, i.e. red = pissed off smiley. These remind me of alien smileys, or nauseous smileys. I could see them being green if there was a theme to it, but the site is white and blue and gray, only green is the lizard logo, which almost looks out of place. But of the smileys, the only two I really like are basically the same, but the only ones that look like they have personality, the rest look lifeless and cockeyed/lazy-eyed why is he looking left AND right? Anyway, smileys are kinda arbitrary not some life or death make or break a site issue. I'd say make yellow smileys, make sure you have all the ones the old site did, *go go party hat* and pump some life into them.

And now onto, "OMFG I LOVE THIS"

1. I like how you can see all the new things, including walls (which got kicked earlier because there's so many *piffles*)

2. I LOVE!! how when you go to a specific library, for example object dock, it shows the top authors and downloads FOR THAT PARTICULAR SECTION.

3. The overall look of the site is mucho better, and little things like users having little pictures by posts and such are nice.

and now onto "wtf?"

Awards? AWARDS?!! Coolness, oh wait.... the awards are retarded. What the hell is a "comment award" And the "1000 downloads award"?!!! Who in the hell doesn't have 1000 downloads, ( side note, if anyone doesn't have 1000 downloads, thats a probably a good sign that you shouldn't upload -_- ) And even better the "wincustomize subscriber" award, lets single out the subscribers and unsubscribers!! Which makes things even more fun when the disputes come about of "who contributes to the site" as if the only real contribution you give is to give 20 bucks away. Or is it that since many subscribers find little use or benefit to subscribing you decided "Gee dandy, these folks deserve an award". The only real benefit I've ever seen is being able to rate works, and should that really be a "privilege". I can definetly see abuse being given if you could go from any computer and rate, but shouldn't logging in with a membership be enough? And yes I noticed the "Click here to Subscribe and get rid of ads and more!" link right at the top of every page. It's kinda like the "pop up ads" that say "CLICK HERE TO GET RID OF POP UP ADS!!"

Anyway, in my benevolent yet insignificant opinion;

Make "my skins" exactly like it used to be, then add the extra display features.

Make the site navigation consistent on every page at least with the main links like libraries.

Make the smileys yellow, with the old emotions, and some "UMPH"

and make the awards worth having, such as 100k downloads, 1mil downloads, stuff that MATTERS, cause it's a really interesting concept for a feature.

Very well said horizOn, great observations...and one question, it seems if you click on a picture of a skin or whatever, it doesn't count as a download, but if you click on download, it does count..in screenshots, i see some with 5 or 6 comments with no downloads credited...do people comment on just the small pic?
in my opinion views of screenshots shouldn't count as downloads no matter what, they're just there to display, there's no real skin being downloaded. But either way, I'm sure people are just clicking on the picture to see it instead of downloading, since thats quicker anyway. It's too hard to see just the little pic =P
