Is the windows enhancement community ready for heavy graphic skins?

Is the windows enhancement community ready for heavy graphic skins?

Very often I find myself wondering what the big diffrence is between things like windowblinds and windows media player.

Its not hard to see that a lot of WMP skins use a lot heavier graphics then WB skins.
(note, with heavy graphic I mean 3d style).

I think its the custom shape of WMP that makes it more suitable for heavy graphic skins but wouldn't it be awesome to have a little of that 3d feeling being put in a wb skin?
I know there is some 3d in WB skins, but it never really get past an 'innershadow' filter

Whats the deal with this?

/me fingers are starting to tintel as he has this 3d wb skin idea in his head for nearly a week now... Time to dust of skinstudio

I think it's just jpg compression. Because my image was small, I was able to have the quality at full, and the file size wasn't too bad. It's not the quality of Styl's actual graphics themselves.

As far as the whole plastic vs metal between the two images thing goes, I've seen cars with a painted texture that look almost exactlky like what Hippy did. Yours, well, I don't mean to be rude, but compared to hippy's, looks a little more like toothpaste.

You seem to be forgetting that there is a lot more to 3d appearances than just jumping out at you. Some of the best 3d skins I have seen have had more of a layered effect, where it just seems like one part is hovering above another part. Huge bevels are just not very attractive.

Of course, if you still think a 3d skin should be totally in your face, maybe you should check out some of my work from a few years ago. "Chained" would be a good example. man that was AWFUL!

Sorry Styl but Hippy's version looks more professional by far. Do we need to vote on it?

I dunno Hippy, no disrespect but the grain shows on Styl's image but not on yours. Even when put right next to each other.

NT, that is indeed the compression of the .jpg file. Thats the small price for not using gradients. The file wasn't saved at its maximum to keep the file size low.

And btw, I really, honestly think that hippy's piece looks a bit 'flat'... probably see the depht of my piece as I created it and know in what the idea behind it is.

It does make sense Styl , I just couldnt imagine you were looking at the same thing I was, insisting there was no grain was making me laugh. Thats why I was curious about your monitor.

After all, this is a project for the client so its about how he thinks about it. If he feels like switching to skinplant because their skin is better, I am not going to stop him.

I have to say Style, that I've seen "Quick Previews" of that skin for a long while now, and it seems that it hasnt changed much over the course of time...

That is one patient client.

This isn't meant to be a contest. I simply posted the pic , in response to the comment saying that kind of depth cannot be done with gradients, to show what 'can' be acheived in PS simply using nothing more than them. (Apart from the obvious outline which was stroked). It wasn't supposed to say 'This is better than yours'. May be more prudent if I remove the image.

My personal opinion....one is a 3D plastic thingie....the other is a 3D 'metallic or glassy' thingie.....either can be the other with 5 minutes of button-clicking in PSP.

Now...

If it's about personal perception of what looks good then maybe it's neither cos I prefer grey.

What IS important about the quality of image creatable via one software vs another is the skill of the artist, not whether the proggy is primarily 2D or 3D in methodology.

You people DO REALIZE that anything made in Terragen or Bryce can be replicated perfectly well in MSPaint [given time, skill and vision].

People get all 'thingie' about pixel-art, layers, and/or 3D render/generation yet all any method does is fool your eye into 'pretending' something has a third dimension.

Study the 'mechanics' [mathematics] of Perspective, Skiagraphy, and Architectural Rendering [without AutoCAD], put aside personal preferences relating to 'shine', be consistent with light-source and realise humility is your friend...

Styl, your design is all right, but you really need to take a modesty pill.

The way you started this thread was basically saying that all the existing skins are boring and looked Photoshopish, while you could do much better in 3D.  The truth is that, while you design is pretty nice, it really is not better than a lot of nice 3ish skins available it doesn't look any less Photoshopish. It may be frustrating that what you probably put a lot of work into, was recreated just as well in 5 minutes by an established and experienced skinner.  Just remember that some people here have been creating skins for many years and their work shows for it.  You come around like a student who argues with the teacher thinking he knows more than him.

If I can give you an advice, be a bit more modest and people will like your work better.  If you present something as a revolution in skinning and end up showing something similar to what is done, people will be harder on you than if you would have presented it with a lot more modesty.

actually it does not even matter the master or the student or paint or PhotoShop each skin appeals to diff ppl I've seen ppl pass up a good pro skin for a yeech skin (you'd have to be a real old timer to remember what a yeech skin looked like) hehe

but the bottom line is for every type of skin there is a user who will appreciate pro or non pro good looking or newbie looking...
alright w/ that being said most likely the good skin will have a billion downloads vs the yeech looking skin but stillll the yeech skin "will" get downloads no matter how horrid it may look to most ppl...

Paxx, I really wasn't saying that this was something revolutionairy, or atleast, I wasnt trying to. I know its done before and this was just an example (I have this thing arround for a while now) of what I call 3d style.

How can people like my work better if I am more modest? Am I missing something?
