The success of the Gmail economic model is just how many and how quickly people take it up....as it is reliant [critically reliant] on size of potential advertising market, hence the 'clubby' distribution gimick ....get your mates to sell you on the idea....and then sell it on to others...ad nauseum.

It's so blatantly overt it's hilarious...

So what? So it's brilliant marketing. The problem is?

As for #100, I follow you for the first three statements, but the forth one doesn't apply.

Get name and addy of every person ever to have bought a tie and you locate every potential tie-pin buyer.

If you mean to imply that Google gives out your name and Gmail address to advertisers, you're wrong. Google does have a private policy and they have ethicsc, unlike other companies (AOL,Microsoft, etc.)

Oh come now....surely you don't believe that?  The whole reason for Gmail is advertising....and it's clever....it doesn't 'give out your addy, etc', it taps the advertiser on the shoulder and points at you physically and says 'HE MIGHT JUST WANT YOUR PRODUCT...WITH OUR HELP AS AN INTERFACE WE [YOU] GET HIM'

It's so bloody clever....they know you....they have you...you are their lamb to the slaughter....and they are so noble and just they interface as  the 'legal' way to circumvent otherwise overt information dissemination.

The wording of the privacy statements is vague at best and deceptive at worst.

Sorry Jafo, I just gotta laugh

Reminds me of the scene in 'Life of Brian' where Spike Milligan appeals to the crowd to "stop... let us... pray..." and they all just push past him until he's on his own.

What makes you think that? I have never once clicked on an advertising link. The only way the advertiser is going to benefit is if I do click on their link. Sure, the whole purpose of the site is for advertising, but if I choose to ignore the beggar on the street, they go pester the next guy.

The whole purpose for Google is advertising too. How would they make money otherwise? Do you use Google to search? If you do, I don't understand your opposition to gmail. To me, it's the same thing. Advertising based on keywords. Links placed on a web page that I get to choose what to do with. I can ignore them, or I can choose to follow the link, which in turn supports the service that I am using.

Just like this site, it costs a lot of money to operate. They need support to keep it going. Wincustomize chooses to sell subscriptions. Google/Gmail chooses to use advertising.

The advertiser is not going to get any information about me, unless I choose to give it to him, just like the beggar on the street isn't going to get anything from me unless I choose to give it to him.

I have not received even 1 spam to my gmail account. It doesn't mean that if I give out my address to a spammer, that I wouldn't, but it does show that Google hasn't given it out to any spammers. They even have spam filters in gmail. They want to fight spam too.

Jafo, I find your attitude towards GMail somewhat similar to people who say that Stardock is evil.

Your name and other personal information is not given to the advertisers. The ads are placed there by a software, the advertisers never know on who's email account their ad were displayed. They will only know you if somehow you willingly give it to them (for example if you click on a ad contest link and enter your information in a form).

Part of Gmail privacy policy:

Protecting your privacy

Google takes privacy very seriously, and your trust is important to us. Gmail users should know:

  1. Google does not share any email content or other personally identifiable information with advertisers.
  2. No humans read any email messages to target advertising or related information that users may see on Gmail.
  3. Users only see unobtrusive, targeted ads alongside their Gmail messages.

Google also takes several steps to guard the confidentiality of users' information by offering a number of industry-leading protections. Among other things, Gmail users benefit from:

  • Encrypted access (HTTPS) available via https://gmail.google.com.
  • An SSL-encrypted login by default. Your password is always encrypted when it is sent over the Internet.
  • Blocked transmission of executable files, which often contain viruses or spyware that scanners may miss.
  • No loading of external images by default. Many marketing or spam messages include hidden "web bugs" embedded in external images. Typically, when these images are loaded, the web bugs signal that the email address is active, thereby helping companies further perfect their recipient list for marketing or spam messages. Not loading external images helps to prevent this.
  • Minimized "referrer" header information. When you click on links in messages, the web browser that loads contains a referrer header. When you click on links in Gmail, Google takes steps to eliminate this referrer header, preventing others from knowing that you clicked on a link from an email.

Rocky...of course they want to fight spam and spammers....that's why they developed their own methodology.

I gladly support sites such as Wincustomize.com [obviously]....I choose to, just as I choose to be aware of what motivates Gmail's existence and raison d'etre.

The intrinsic and substantive difference is with the 'how' and 'by which means' that the advertising targetting is acquired.....through people's willingness to allow a private commercial company to intercept  ON ANY LEVEL communications between individuals controlled by the Telecommunications Act, where one reasonably expects a degree of privacy within such communication.

Rescinding one's rights to privacy from commercial entities is not a good thing, unless you are the commercial entity itself.

Patric...that's quite unfair....It insinuates comparitive hysteria....and you know full-well I am not a party to the latter.

This is all about a new, clever way of duping those who cannot pidgeon-hole the new concept within the current examples of 'spyware' or 'spam' or 'innocent advertising'.

The idea is new and intentionally portrayed as 'non invasive'....but the result is identical.

You are being connected with an advertiser which would NOT be the case if Gmail did not hire a bunch of 'robots' to scan a private communication for keywords.

It's really quite simple....so simple I can't see why people refuse to acknowledge it....

Somewhere within the conditions it also states that content may be forwarded or scrutinized when legally required....worded similar to that, leaving open the floodgates to all fun interpretations of what is considered 'required'.

It is too vaguely worded to protect anyone what-so-ever.

I have to balance my trust of Jafo's opinions in general against my gut feeling that he is being a bit too paranoid on this particular subject...
I do like to err on the side of caution however, and I certainly don't need this gmail account for anything at all.
Seemed like a neat idea at the time, but I doubt if I'll use it much.
hmmmmmm.... hehe
