Task Manager?

Task Manager?

Anyone know if you can get the Windows task manager to come up other than using the three finger salute(alt-ctrl-delete?) My sister has the Sasser worm and she can't get the task manager to come up......any ideas?

If it's on the floppy, tell her to copy it anywhere on her hard drive and double click it.

Tell her to boot-up normal and run it.... Make sure to tell her to turn off her internet connection.

Since you guys are on the phone, if she says it still won't run then tell her to boot into full Windows and copy to the hard drive and run it with a double click.

Annie, if she turns off the Internet Connection, she won't be able to get the patch....

Gary, Stinger is a stand alone program...It need's not the internet

The MS Patch is what I'm referring to...she needs to install it.

I am a little concerned about that re-direct. There's nothing stock on my machine...isn't there a shortcut in system tools or somewhere to take you right to Windows update site without having to open up IE?

This may sound dumb but how do you know if and when it(Stinger) has completed the task?

If she has a reasonably fast HD, it should only take 10 minutes or so, depending on how many files she has.

Tell her to shut down any running programs (Norton would be one) and try again

This worm may cause LSASS.EXE to stop responding, which forces the operating system to shut down after 60 seconds. If your computer starts to shut down, follow these steps to abort any system shutdown that may be in progress.

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.
Type: cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type: shutdown.exe -a and then press ENTER.

This is optional and I don't think she'll need to do it, but just in case:

You can temporarily remove the vulnerability that allows the worm to infect your computer by creating a log file.

Create the log file

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.
Type: cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type: echo dcpromo >%systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log and then press ENTER.
Make the log file read-only

At the command prompt, type: attrib +R %systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log and then press ENTER.

If she wants to disconnect from the internet, have her just unplug the J45 plug from the back of her computer or modem.
